Is being Chief Really Worth it?

Dave Statter reported on the latest saga in the DCFD. It centers around council blaming the hydrnat problems on their Chief, Dennis Rubin. The Chief thinks that he isn’t getting enough credit for making headway in the laundry list of issues plaguing the department.

The whole hydrant issue came to the forefront after a mansion burned because there wasn’t enough water on the hydrants. You can read the entire report here. Be sure to read the comments at the link.

My question is this: Is being the Chief really worth it?

FC, you know this is a great question and I hope many comment, the role of Chief is critical to provide leadership. If you have ever talked to Chief Rubin he has made great strides. The role of chief does get the brunt of political heat, but everyone has their job.

I have seen many organizations try to go without a chief and they usually self destruct after a year or so. If you say personally is it worth it? Depends on the person and what they want to take on. Since I have not filled the shoes of a five bugle guy (or gal) I with hold my comment because I r not one, but they are needed to help guide the fire department.

Being Chief of a major department is definitely not worth it–all public relations and schmoozing idiot politicians. Being Battalion/District chief in a major department, however, is one of the best jobs in the world.

I personal know FC Dennis Rubin and know that he is doing everything humanly possible to bring the DCFD around. However, in many metropolitan areas, the fire hydrants come under the responsibility of the water department.

I know in my little corner of the world being a Fire Chief is a “great” responsibility that should be taken seriously at all times. He/She should be one that is there for the ranks at all time, good or bad! The chief needs to stand up for what's right and battle the wrong. I have not had the chance to wear the title but i have filled in for him in his absence and i can say its a good feeling to have people to look to you for your leadership! We are a small combination department but the job is the same no matter the size “leadership is leadership” So with all that my answer is “YES” being chief can be worth it!

I always imagined myself moving up the ranks and eventually trying to obtain the rank of Chief in a paid system…however, in the recent years I cannot imagine wanting to put up with all of the grief.
