Texting While Walking PSA

If you thought the Texting While Driving PSA was overboard, graphic, and disturbing you will LOVE the Texting While Walking PSA. I am not sure which is worse. This is just downright nasty….ha! Actually this is pretty funny and gratifying!

Here is the original texting while driving PSA warning…graphic

This one is short and pretty funny!

The Fire Critic Needs Your Help

Hey all, the Fire Critic is in need of help. I am working on the official apparel for the Fire Critic and I have hit a roadblock.

I need some ideas on tag lines to go along with the logo. The tag line I created with the logo is Fire Critic: An Unadulterated View of the Fire Service. However, I am not necessarily pleased with that being on the apparel.

I am looking for something raw, smart ass, funny, rude, or whatever. Give it your best shot in the comments. If your line is picked, The Fire Critic will pick up the bill for your first piece of apparel.

Right now, we are looking at offering shirts, hoodies, aprons, boxers, coffee mugs (yes FireGeezer I am a poser), Beer Steins, and even a woman’s thong!

Give me your ideas for tag lines and you can even tell me what apparel you think it would work best on if you want!

I can cater the logo to crop any part  of it. I attached some examples.Click on the images to enlarge them (some of the images are cropped when the thumbnails are created).

Fire Engine Flooded in Atlanta

Check out this video of a fire engine almost covered in flood waters in Atlanta. The engine was on scene of a house fire in Cobb County.

Updated: STATter 911 beat me to this one and has some more information on the engine here.

Tuesday Morning Job Security Check – Drifting

This weeks Tuesday Morning Job Security Check ( I really need an acronym for that…TMJSC) is “Drifting”.

Apparently this “drifting” is really big over in Saudi Arabia. I am not sure why looking at some of these videos. I am sure this would be really fun on a closed course without the possibility of killing or maiming anyone but myself. Anyways, they are keeping someone employed somewhere…the tow service, the first responders, the junk yard, nurses, doctors, and car dealers! I am sure there are worse videos out there of people drifting, but these are pretty bad!

Enjoy…warning graphic

This is why we TRAIN

This video below is a perfect example of why we train. How in the world can we be expected to put out fires and save lives if we cannot even get out of our apparatus. It just looks bad….really, really bad! Get it together! Ouch!

Fireman Ed – New York Jets Superfan

Fireman Ed at a game in 2008.

Do you know who Fireman Ed is? I didn’t until just a couple of minutes ago. I do know that I have seen him before, but never put two and two together that he might actually be a firefighter.

From Wikipedia: Ed Anzalone (better known as Fireman Ed) is a superfan of the New York Jets,[1][2] and one of the most well known National Football League fans.[3][4][5] He was the originator of the famous chant, “J-E-T-S, Jets!, Jets!, Jets!,”[6] though some dispute this, claiming that he merely leads the chant and that it originated elsewhere.[7][8] An actual New York City firefighter, Fireman Ed was injured on the job in 2007, and missed the 2007 season.[9]

Anzalone wears Bruce Harper’s jersey to most games. In 1999 he was included in the Pro Football Hall of Fame as part of the Hall of Fans.[10] Source: Wikipedia

Here he is below on the big screen at the game on 9/20/09 making the entire crowd do his chant!

New York State Fire Department Racing

Check out these crazy firefighters. I have heard of this before and watched videos over the years. I think I remember there being some question over the funding of these events. That isn’t why I am posting this though. This is obviously a sport that has evolved over the years. I can only imagine this having started back in the day of horse drawn apparatus. I would hate to be one of those guys on the back and lose my grip!

Anyways, check out these videos:

Making Money on your Blog

As I mentioned before, I am working on getting everything together to enable other bloggers the ability to make money on their blog. We might not be talking about early retirement, but enough of an income to pay for the site and possibly invest in software, hardware, etc. for the betterment of the blog.

At this time I am asking for your ideas on how you make money on your blog. If it is google adsense, then leave a comment. If you have other ways, let us know. If you don’t make any money but want to, then stay tuned for the post coming in the near future. You aren’t actually waiting on me, you are waiting on one more product that might revolutionize Fire/EMS websites and blogs as far as monetizing them. So bear with me…I think.

If  you know of ideas, let me know. I might not know of them. Affiliate sites, click through advertising, selling space on your site. You name it I am interested. Especially companies offering this ability! Contact me!

Monday Morning Shoutout – FireGroundVideo.com

This weeks Monday Morning Shoutout goes to FireGroundVideo.com. This is a brand new website. So we are going to help out and boost its readership. The website is kinda like Firefighter Spot, although I think that there is a significant difference. You will more than likely find videos on FireGroundVideo.com that you might not find on Firefighter Spot. Basically, there might be more videos and ones that might have been culled by Firefighter Spot. Competition, maybe but I think you will find a unique approach on the website. The website is brought to you by Prinston Media.

You can follow them on Twitter too @FireGroundVideo.

Blog Tip – Why Fire/EMS Bloggers Should Sign up for Twitter

In today’s blog tip, I would like to explain why Fire/EMS Bloggers should at least sign up for Twitter.

First of all, you can read other posts where I discuss twitter or tag twitter here.

So here it goes…

  • You should sign up for twitter so that someone else doesn’t sign up using your namesake.
  • You will be amazed at what traffic you receive by using twitter as an RSS syndication platform. That basically means using twitter to automatically post your post title and url (link to your post) on twitter for others to click on.
  • All you have to do to make this happen is use a client (free) like twitterfeed. Sign up and fill out the necessary information on your blog (including your twitter account and your RSS feed).
  • Then you can check out this list of 100+ awesome Fire/EMS Twitter users and add some of them to your twitter friends.
  • After that, you can sit back and watch traffic come from Twitter.
  • Your posts will be automatically be added to Twitter via Twitterfeed and you don’t have to do anything.
  • If others like your post, they might reply to it.
  • If they reply to it (@reply) your joint friends will see the tweet and may reply and/or click on it too. Replies explained here.
  • If they RT then their followers will see it and they might not be followers of yours. It is a pyramid!
  • One other useful tip is to join wefollow. This client (free) will enable your Twitter account to show up on lists related to your topics.
  • On wefollow, pick certain keywords like #Firefighter, #Firefighting, #Fire, #Paramedic, #EMS, #EMT or whatever your fancy.

If you have questions on this please let me know. I love helping out fellow fire/ems bloggers!

What Starts with F and Ends with Uck? Hilarious!

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah….I know what you are thinking….well I have to add this little disclaimer: warning language.

But this is hilarious!!!

Caveat Lectores – Your Law Answers

Jeff Carnes runs a blog titled “Caveat Lectores“. His blog states: “Caveat Lectores is the name of an opinion letter published by Lectores Labor Consulting and me when my mood motivates me to type out a Rant. My rants allow my blood pressure to subside.”

I have enjoyed reading his blog. He writes about law that relates to Public Safety and he is/was a firefighter (Captain) in Florida.

He writes an interesting post (here) relating to overtime in the Fire Service. I could not have said it any better when he explains what overtime is and why it is occuring in the fire service. While firefighters are ridiculed across the nation for soaking up overtime pay, we have become victims of shortcuts by fire departments.

He writes:

The only reason for overtime at all is because the employer does not hire enough employees to provide the needed service. Follow closely here, but this is not rocket science. The lack of manpower forces the employer to require somebody to come to work on their regular day off. When public employers chronically under staff, the employees work a lot of overtime.

Read the entire post here and enjoy the videos at the bottom of the post. He has plenty of other information available for you to read too!

I Would Have Soaked These Punks

Can anyone tell me what department this is? I think it is Toronto. I would love to contact them to tell them about this video.

All I can say is that these kids would have gotten soaked. I would have used that time waiting for water to put a solid tip nozzle on the line and opened it up on these idiot kids! Your thoughts?

On a side note: Check out this blog…Toronto Fire Pics. Great blog, great pics!

If you have not seen it, you should definitely watch it!!!

A little Experiment of Twitter Users with Blogs

This is kind of a random post. I posted a question on my twitter account @FireCritic asking about how many had blogs. I know of some, but I cannot keep track of all of them.

Think of this as a little experiment. I simply posted on twitter that I was looking for anyone who had a blog to respond. They didn’t have to be my friends on twitter, but they wouldn’t find out unless they had a friend who RT’d the tweet.

Here are the ones who replied. The following are the blog links with their twitter account following.

Again, this was kind of an experiment. Feel free to add your blog/twitter account to the comments and be sure to follow me at @FireCritic!

Blog Owners – Do you Monetize your Blog?

Here is a question for bloggers everywhere (not just fire/EMS blog). Do you monetize your blog? If so, what do you use?

I am working on a post for the near future that will explain some of the best ways for Fire/EMS Service blogs to monetize their blogs.

I know of several ways we can do it, but I am not going to spoil now. If you absolutely cannot wait, email me or use the contact form and I can help you out.

Otherwise, please let me know the following:

  • Do you monetize your blog?
  • Would you like to make some money on your blog?
  • Is the only reason you started your blog was to make money?
  • Would you be interested in finding out more about the possibilities?

Let me know in comments or by contact us page (on menu bar) or via email firecritic@firecriticdotcom.

My LA County LODD Memorial Shirt has Arrived

I have posted on memorial/tribute shirts in the past many times. I really enjoy showing my pride for our Fallen Brothers through the purchase and wearing of these shirts. Just last night when I got it in the mail, I spoke with some of my neighbors about the shirt, who the guys were, and how they died. If you haven’t gotten yours yet, you can find ordering information here.

A Thank You From the Fire Critic

Hey Readers…

I just wanted to take a minute to thank all of you for a great start to this new up and coming blog. This blog is something I have wanted to do for around 5 years and wish I had started it when I first thought about doing it. I didn’t and that is the way it is. I was busy at the time with other blogs and websites which I still run today but have found a balance in the mix.

I hope that everyone is enjoying the Fire Critic and everything that comes with it. I enjoy writing about just about anything related to the fire and EMS service and have tried to balance it as best I can. The blog is only 4 months old and the traffic continues to rise. That is great and I am very grateful for the attention.

If there is anything I can ever do for any of my readers, cohorts, fellow bloggers, or first responders please do not hesitate to ask.

I look forward to a long life here on the web and I hope you continue to enjoy what the Fire Critic is about!

Knowing the rules within your dept. for social media

Firefighters and Medics have found that social media can be a lot of fun. However, you have to follow the rules. Both the rules of the social media and that of your department apply. In this situation it is better to ensure you are within your departments policies before you go guessing.

This medic is finding out the hard way about taking pictures, using a cell phone, and posting pictures on his facebook page. All of these after an instance of using a cellphone to take a picture during a call/emergency of a patient in the back of an ambulance and then posting the picture on facebook. Apparently it violates 3 of the departments policies.

SOUTH BEND – A city firefighter is facing a suspension after he allegedly took pictures of a patient inside an ambulance and then posted the photos to his Facebook account.

Chief Howard Buchanon asked the board of public safety on Wednesday to suspend first-class firefighter Jordan Jostes without pay for the incident that is alleged to have happened in August.

Buchanon, in a letter to the safety board, said Jostes took the photo with a cell phone camera on Aug. 28. Read More Here

Survivor Competitor a Strategist or an Imposter

The newest installment of Survivor in Samoa will be starting on September 17th. CBS is already showing video on youtube of one of their contestants. Apparently Russell Hantz has told people on the show that he is a firefighter in New Orleans.

The youtube video states: Russell has never lived in New Orleans, he’s not a firefighter, he doesn’t have a dog… so why is he telling everyone these things?

In all actuality, he is an oil company owner from Texas. So what do you think, is this savvy strategy or is he an imposter that has no business telling anyone that he is a firefighter? I guess my first thought is that it is he is an imposter and could potentially bring a bad name to firefighters. If you are not a firefighter, don’t say you are…ever! What do you think?

Facebook Page Created for The Fire Critic

Ok, I admit that I goofed. Here I spout out social media and marketing tips and tools and I didn’t even get it right.

I learned a long time ago that it is ok to admit you are wrong.

I have corrected my mistake in making a Facebook page instead of the Facebook group that I had created a couple months ago.

Therefore, please come over and join the Fire Critic on Facebook at our new spot. Stop in and say hello while you are there! Post a link or whatever the hell else you would like to do on there!
