One Last Word on Trauma

The Blue Ridge Medic has been able to say what I apparently had a  hard time saying…although it was written on Oct. 12th it is worth a read. For those of you who don’t know about the BRM it is a well written blog!

It kinda puts it all in perspective and follows along with what I wrote about it and still stick to. Oh yeah….and the BRM is just down the street from me (literally just a couple miles down 460!)

I will highlight some of it:

Now, what about other TV shows out there that are emergency or medical based like Rescue Me, ER and House? Does anyone think that everything that happened on ER was true to life? I saw false intubations, doctors defib asystole and many other things. Yet, that show went on forever and was critically acclaimed.

Your Unofficial Guide to “The Project”

If you haven’t heard, The Happy Medic and Medic 999 are embarking on an educational on-the-job meet up. Justin Schorr, whose name I knew before it was cool to know his name, will be having Mark Glencorse over for eight days in San Francisco. The San Francisco Fire Department being the place of Justin (The Happy Medic) Schorr’s employment. Following those eight days, Mark will go swim home and  Justin will head to England a couple of days later to have tea and crumpets and a ride along with Mark. The North East Ambulance Service NHS Trust being the place of Mark’s employment.

USA-UK-BADGE-300x189Follow down to the bottom of the post for important terms, how to follow, and where to follow regarding the project!

This whole “Project” came about after a “courting” period between the two bloggers. They often discussed clinical applications of pre-hospital emergency care. Justin being a Firefighter/Paramedic on an engine and Mark a Medic in a car for the North East Ambulance Service NHS Trust.

Through comments on each others blogs, email, and phone calls they hatched The Project. Originally, the BBC was going to follow along and film The Project but they pulled the plug in negotiations with Mark’s employer.

Now, Ted Setla (@Setla)is working on filming of The Project (at least State-side).Link

The Project is a unique endeavor planned and executed by the two. The promoting, discussing, and marketing has been a free for all by many top names in the EMS industry! The Project has been dissected, boasted, envied, and examined by many through twitter, facebook, and blogs.

Justin and Mark promise blogging, tweeting, videos, emails, carrier pigeons, smoke signals, and messages in bottles to get their project out to the masses as it happens!

Many industry professionals (EMS, Medics, PIO’s, Social Marketers, Fire, etc.) are watching and maybe even holding their breathe a little to see what will become of this.

On the heels of a very successful twitter/blogging/video social media marketed EMS Expo, many are wondering what is next…We will just have to wait and see.

If you would like to follow along, keep an eye on the links below throughout the next 3 weeks and beyond!

Important terms

  • Justin Schorr = The Happy Medic, Happy Medic, HM. Located in San Francisco.
  • HMHQ = Happy Medic HeadQuarters aka Justin’s house.
  • Mark Glencorse = 999 Medic, Medic 999, That English Guy. Located in NewCastle. (I always wanted to live in a brewery!)
  • The hashtags for The Project on Twitter are #911999 (the project) and #CoEMS (chronicles of EMS)

Follow along with The Happy Medic and Medic 999

Can someone please translate this into English for Mark?

Justin…enjoy the boo-doo siren and blue lights! I hope your tall lanky A@# fits in that little car!

Product Review -Magnum Elite Force 8.0 WPI with Ion Mask

magnumCome on in and sit down. I have some boots to tell you all about. I wrote about what boots I used to wear around the station and on calls which did not require turnout gear here.

The Fire Critic is here to tell you that I have two new friends. I have found these magnum ion mask boots to be extremely pleasant to wear while working. They are definitely Fire Critic approved!

5298The boots came out of the box and were immediately put on my feet…kinda like a kid on Christmas morning. The following day I went to work. I again put the boots on. Here is the deal…The boots I used to wear have zippers so I can take them off quickly. I tied my magnum boots tight all the way up. I don’t always have to take my boots off quickly because I drive usually (a quint that is). One thing I noticed was that these boots would need a break in period. They were pulling the hair (very hairy) off my legs. This did not last too long and I realized that they boots would work better tied loosely. I can actually slip them on and off like slippers, yet they still allow for decent support. The low v-cut in the back of the boot is especially helpful in getting the boots on and off quickly!

The boots have been worn ever since I got them at work. Their lightweight design is very nice and breathe ability is an added benefit. No more smelly dogs (funky feet). The boots are exceptionally great at repelling water and keeping the water in the creek I walked through on the outside of the boot. I don’t normally walk through creeks, but I did want to give a fair test since there weren’t any puddles around!

Here is a quick rundown of the pros and cons:

PROS:

  • lightweight
  • water resistant
  • leather construction
  • v-cut in back of boot for easy donning and doffing
  • awesome sole that wraps around boot and higher in the back

CONS:

  • no steel toe (required on fireground)
  • no zipper (personal preference)

So there you have it. The Fire Critic loves his new Magnum Elite Force 8.0 WPi boots with ion mask. The boots are very well designed and have a great feel to them.

The Fire Critic shall continue wearing the magnum boots around the station and on calls. I can slip easily into my turnout gear on calls requiring steel toed boots! Steel toes are not required around the station but are required on many calls.

For all you readers who want more information on what is keeping the feet dry:

Ion-mask is a patented plasma based technology, originally developed for the military to protect soldiers during chemical warfare. It permanently alters the surface of fabric at a molecular level to repel water and other liquids – which are forced to bead and simply run-off.

As a surface enhancement technology it works by invisibly binding polymers to each individual fiber. The benefits are as transparent as the technology itself, with minimal consumption and negligible waste, ion-mask enhancement represents a big leap forward in footwear technology.

Please follow the link to the magnum ion mask for more information. There is also plenty more information here on the boots.

Medic 999 also did a review here

Anyone else out there wear these boots?

The Fire Critic offers product reviews. Please visit this page for details on how to get your product reviewed and what our policy is on reviews.

Firehouse.com Vs. FireEngineering.com

The all new FireEngineering.com

The all new FireEngineering.com

Two of the largest, most popular, and longest running fire service websites are in the middle of being redesigned. Firehouse.com is still being tweaked while running live online. FireEngineering.com is live, but I believe still being tweaked although the web site does not say anything to that effect.

A while back, I did a critique of FireEngineering.com. It was not a full critique but more so a small idea of how I would change it to better suite ME. Yes it was very selfish. At the time I did not realize that FireEngineering was actaully going through a redesign. Bobby Halton, Fire Engineering Editor-in-Chief, actually left a comment on the post and offered to let me in on the redesign and offer my thoughts. While Halton meant well, I never got to offer my input because the webteam working on the new site never got in touch with me. However, I have since been in contact with him about the progress.

The all new Firehouse.com

The all new Firehouse.com

Fast forward to today and we have two very instrumental, prominent, and popular websites being redeveloped. Understandably they will both be having growing pains as they customize their look and fix any bugs. All in all, both of the sites look decent. I will offer one suggestion on each site, if they want more they know where to find me.

Firehouse.com - Lose the quick links at the bottom. They take up too much space.

FireEngineering.com - There is simply too much stuff on the homepage. simplify it.

As a webmaster myself, it is always difficult in figuring out exactly what to put on the home page. Simply put, we want everyone to read everything! It just isn’t going to happen. You have to make it simple but eye catching. People click on images and videos! Thumbnails are a must! In my experience, there are three kinds of readers….

  1. Regular readers – these are the guys who go to a site on a regular basis and scroll through the new stuff and read what catches there eye.
  2. First time readers – these people end up on your site and just start clicking. If they find it interesting they might become regular readers.
  3. Search engine traffic - these people end up on a specific page for a specific reason, cater the sidebar and navigation bar so that they can continue looking/searching once they get to the site.

I think that the FireEngineering did a better job with the overall look but Firehouse.com did better with the content layout.

What do you all think? Do you like the new sites? What do you like and what don’t you like?

LA County’s #2 falls to Nepotism

Sharon Harper, LA. County’s number two highest ranking employee has been demoted. The demotion was punishment or hiring practices related to her son- in-law, Ed’Ward Rhone. Harper will retain her previous position in the Sheriff’s office.

Not only did Harper get Rhone hired, she actually created a job just for him. However, instead of just hiring him into the position, Harper first hired Rhone into a different job making more money then laterally transferred him to the brand new position in the FD.

Rhone has really made bank on the deal though. He is getting paid almost $1,000 more per month because of the slight of hand by Harper. He will get to keep it unless they find wrong-doing on his part.

The audit by county Auditor-Controller Wendy Watanabe concluded that Harper had a “clear conflict of interest” when she helped to create a position in the Los Angeles County Fire Department for Ed’Ward Rhone without submitting documents to supervisors showing that the job was needed.

The report also found that Harper helped to arrange Rhone’s hiring into a more demanding job at the Department of Health Services, where he reported to work for only a few hours before a “lateral transfer” to a Fire Department position that should have paid $995 less a month. The extra pay represented 25% of his paycheck. Read the entire article

I am sure the guys aren’t making light of their “handsomely paid” firefighter.

Top Ten List – Influential Fire/EMS Twitter Users

toptenIt has been a while since I have posted about twitter. I have actually not been on twitter that much the past week. I was the target of spam the other day. My account sent out direct messages to a ton of the people I follow or follow me and it really pissed me off.

For the following lists I am utilizing WeFollow.com. They have recently added an “Most Influential” tab that is actually default over the old categorizing of “Most Followers”. WeFollow.com seems to have become the norm for finding out the who is who in various niches. This list is a little bit different than my previous post ” Top 100+ Fire/EMS Twitter Users – Are you included?”

The results are listed #1 – #10, the first being the most influential. One other note is that if you click on the link to the WeFollow.com list it might be completely different from when I published this.

Missouri City Firefighters Serious about Fire Prevention

Firehouse-Clowns-6smallFirefighter Mark Kitson of the Missouri City FD is one of the ringleaders in this years fire prevention performance. The performance has been seen by thousands of children and features Hannah Montana, Optimus Prime, and a Caveman. I must say that these guys go above and beyond as their clown troop teaches the young audience. Check out the information and videos below.

Firefighter Mark Kitson has been instrumental in putting the acts together and recently shared a story about how one student used tips he learned from the clowns to save his sister’s life. The shows provide a “good message for kids. Once, a little boy saved his sister from a seizure and when asked how he did it, he said he saw the Firehouse Clowns and they showed him how to do it.” More information here

Fire Rescue TV

frtFire Rescue TV (FireRescueTV.com) is online and their community is growing. Check them out and watch their latest news.

The website is the brainchild of Martin Grube who recently retired from the Virginia Beach Fire Department.

The site offers video, photos, and news coverage.

Before you go all willy nilly about a majority of the coverage being in the Virginia Beach area you should note that Fire Rescue TV is about fire news anywhere. You just have to submit your news to them.I believe they are based out of Hampton right now.

Look forward to more in depth and longer news as the site grows.

You might also note their advertising special going on now.

Great job Martin!

Blog Tip – Tagging Youtube Videos

Actually, this is about tagging any videos. Having Youtube in the title is more of a SEO bonus!

Here is a pet peeve of mine…coming across a video accidentally that is named “video S-84394″. No information, no tags, 14 views but it is a great video that you would have loved to have seen when it was uploaded 3 years ago. That might be a little exaggerated but if you upload/search/watch videos online you will see my point.

I like searching for videos. I like finding what I am looking for if it exists.

If you are uploading videos here are some tips to help you get your video watched more:

  1. Name the video – Make it something pertinent like “House Fire in Scranton” or “4 alarm fire in Jacksonville”.
  2. Tag your video – If you are uploading videos so other people will watch you should be a tag whore! Tags are usually separated by commas. Examples would be: House Fire, Firefighter, Fire, Fireman, Firefighting, Scranton Fire Department, Fire Department, Jacksonville, etc.
  3. Describe the video - This day in age of embedding videos on blogs and web sites is getting out of control! But I love it! If you want your video embedded, be sure to NAME IT, TAG IT, AND DESCRIBE IT. “House Fire” doesn’t say much in the description. Add details like Where (City,State), When (date), What time, Who responded, other pertinent data.

Use this simple ideas to increase the views on your videos!

Above all else, email people when it is online. Shoot an email to bloggers and web sites when you have uploaded a video you think they should see!

Here is a perfect example below. This is why you should tag your youtube videos.

Title: Fire at IVC Marikina
FC: I don’t know where IVC Marikina is. I might be able to figure it out but why not just give me the info!

Description: house burning near our house, I’ve cutted the video so soon coz the wires from the post were snapping!!!
FC: Spelling? Grammer? Where is “our house”.? If I knew then I would know where the fire is!

Tags: Fire
FC: At least they tagged “fire”. However on youtube, fire is not a decent tag. It should be “house fire” at least!

Blog Tip – When the Honeymoon is Over

You just started a brand new blog and you have been writing quality posts for a couple of weeks. Suddenly you realize that you cannot think of anything to write about. Don’t panic.

Blogging can take a lot of time to perfect. Finding stuff to write about can be difficult (look at me, I am writing about it being hard to find stuff to write about).

Why the FC has been dead…

I had a bad week last week and was away from the computer a good bit. I did not have the time to update as often as I like and I find myself playing catch-up. Now that I have caught up, I am having a difficult time adjusting to writing and finding worthy topics to discuss.

Don’t worry, this type of thing happens all the time. I get writers block several times a year. Sometimes I just kick back and take a small break. I might not publish anything for a week. I don’t like doing it, but I have found that it clears the mind. Once the break is over you begin posting like you never missed a beat.

When I write posts for this blog, I often just click on new post and begin typing. Sometimes I have a certain topic or story I would like to report on but not all the time.

Sometimes I will start a post and save it as a draft. Weeks later I will revisit the post and complete it or delete it.

When the honeymoon is over…

I wouldn’t say that the Fire Critic has had a honeymoon. I have run several blogs and have figured out ways of keeping it fresh.

A lot of bloggers hesitate to link to a new blog or even talk about them because some new blogs just don’t make it. In the past 5 years I have seen some great fire/EMS blogs start up and then stop being updated. Some realize how much time they take up. Others lose interest.

I know some great blogs that were abruptly stopped. One big one of note was FireWhirl. I would feed off of him and he would feed off of my stuff. There were several other blogs at the time, but FireWhirl covered a lot of ground. Sadly, the guy running it just couldn’t focus the time on the blog anymore. FireWhirl stopped being updated. It is still there, just nothing new.

Some people worry too much with all this social media. I am not saying don’t do it. I think everyone should utilize twitter, facebook, etc. to get the word out. What you don’ t have to do is spend so much time on each. Set it up so twitter and facebook run themselves off your blog. You will be amazed at how much traffic you get and you don’t have to do anything but post on your blog.

Blogging can be a lot of fun. Don’t get in over your head and if you do just take a minute to breathe. Your readers will return.

As for the Fire Critic….I have a hell of a lot more to say!!!

Monday Morning Shoutout – USAFireTrucks.com

This weeks Monday Morning Shoutout goes to USAFireTrucks.com. This brand new web site is the brainchild of Jeff Harkey of FireNews.net, Grant Mishoe of SCFireWire.com, and Rhett Fleitz of VAFireNews.com (and Fire Critic!). The site/service was designed as a one stop shop for fire/EMS apparatus. Think of it as the “auto trader” for the fire/EMS service.
