E-One is giving away a fire truck. You can vote now for one of the 7 finalists. Their program “Tell Us Your Story” asked for submissions of departments who are in dire need of a new fire truck. The stories of the 7 finalists are worth reading and certainly worth a vote.

I don’t have a favorite, but the guys from Luther Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department in Oklahoma are dancing for your votes as you can see below! You probably won’t be able to watch much of the video as it gets kind of annoying pretty quick…vote so they quit!

FireGroundVideo.com is up and running again!

FireGroundVideo.com is going strong and better than ever! I created the web site a while back as a sub-site of FireCritic.com. The reason I started it was because I started posting a lot of videos on FC and realized that maybe there was a need for another site. I was kinda right and kinda wrong.

The truth is that web sites are time consuming. I tried my best at updating FGV in a timely manner but realized I just didn’t have the time.

Now it does it for me. That’s right, FireGroundVideo.com is updated every hour with a fireground video. The science is not exact and occasionally I have to go back and delete a “Alice Cooper House on Fire” video.

The great news for me is that it is automated. Not to many people would admit that, but I am an honest person. It pulls firefighting videos from Youtube automatically.

I am not competing with the likes of Firefighter Spot, STATter911, or TheBravestOnline.com (where you will see some of the best and latest videos). I am merely syndicating videos that you might not have seen.

The site is updated every hour and it features a random array of new and old video. Check it out!

We have a facebook page and update on twitter as well. The links are in the sidebar!

Rescue Me Season 6 Premier Tonight

Everyone’s favorite dysfunctional firefighter is back at it for another season. Tommy Gavin is back at it again tonight with Season 6 at 10pm EST. The official web site is here.

I have enjoyed the show. I thought the first couple of seasons were the best. Lets be honest, it is a soap opera…much like the fire service of today!

The information on the new season is below:

Season 6 opens with Tommy shaken by his vision of the afterlife. Tommy comes home to discover that Janet has been relying on Franco during his absence, and finds their newfound closeness suspicious. Uncle Teddy confronts Tommy, insisting he utilize this second chance to make things right. Tommy begins reevaluating his priorities both at home and at the station, and after rescuing a priest from a fire, Tommy seeks out his guidance. Janet and Tommy’s relationship is at another crossroads, both torn between putting the past behind them and whether Tommy can really change.

Meanwhile, Feinberg informs the gang that due to the recession, the Mayor needs to close down some firehouses. Given the house’s renegade reputation, they’re number one on the chopping block, and he insists he’s not going down with them.

Damien, still anxious for his first save, finds himself questioning his place in the Gavin firefighting legacy, while Sheila continues pressuring Tommy to talk to Damien about his role in the brotherhood.

Colleen has started drinking more since Tommy’s shooting, causing concern that she’s following in Tommy’s footsteps. Black Shawn stands by her, and further inserts himself into the family.

Garrity is approached by an ailing firefighter and enlists Mike’s assistance in fulfilling his friend’s last wishes.

Monday Morning Shoutout – SCONFIRE.COM

This weeks Monday Morning Shoutout goes to SCONFIRE.COM. SCONFIRE.COM is a State News web site that has reinvented itself on FireEMSBlogs.com. The site is celebrating its 10th year online. It is run by Grant Mishoe.

Grant and I first met online when I began VAFireNews.com. I had some questions so I shot him an email. We have been friends online ever since (that was about 5 years ago). What amazed me was how helpful he was with answering my questions and how excited he was that I was starting my site. In retrospect, that warm welcome he shared with me is something I will always remember and I have continued to welcome other State News web sites the same way.

The guys who run many of the State News web sites have an online relationship and we share trade secrets back and forth. None of us know all there is to know, but we share our trial and error tips back and forth.

I must admit that I was skeptical of doing a State News web site in a traditional blogging platform. Most of us utilize wordpress or some form of content management system but don’t use the post after post layout of a blog. It seems to be working very well though.

Grant and I are also business partners with Jeff Harkey (FireNews.net) in USAFireTrucks.com. We created the site to advertise apparatus for sale. It is a tool that afforded us to be able to streamline all of the apparatus for sale ads from our respective sites.

Check out SCONFIRE.COM. Congrats on 10 years Grant!

Dramatic Video of Firefighters Being Rescued in New Haven Connecticut

Check out this news coverage of multiple firefighters being rescued from the first and second floor of a house fire. The fire occurred in New Haven Connecticut.

I couldn’t find any information on this fire so it might be an older video (as confirmed in the comments it was a few years ago). It was recently added to youtube. Well worth the watch whether it is new or not though!

Stay in the Buggy Chief…We’ll Get it!

Check out this video of a vehicle fire on the interstate. The Chief ends up on the line and promptly shows off his suppression abilities! In all seriousness though, the firefighters were great examples to the Chief on how to properly dress for a fire. Maybe the Chief will take a hint!

I love how the firefighter promptly steps on the hoseline when the Chief loses control!

The Fire Critic for USFA’s Top Position

The top spot in the pecking order for the National Fire Service is vacant. Kevin Cochran left the post of USFA’s top administrator to take his old job back as Atlanta’s Chief. Now that the search is on for a new Chief, Bill Carey over at Backstep Firefighter is hosting the June Episode of the First Due Blog Carnival and asks us to pitch ourselves for the job!

Therefore I am going to do just that!

Probably the best thing I might bring to the table is the fact that I am one of the “Boots on the Ground”. That is also one of the worst things about me being the Top Chief though. I don’t (and have never) held a Senior Staff Position in any department.

I have a decent idea what we need, how we do business, and the ins and outs of firefighting and fire based EMS.

Lets all be honest….I have no business in this position at all! That is why I am perfect for it. Look around…how many people are in positions they should be?

My agenda would include:

  1. More funding, education, and utilization of the SAFER grant program.
  2. Mini/Maxi standards for firefighter certification and adoption of a mandatory certification process by FD’s. (moan and groan).
  3. Expand and continue to work on the current strategic plan:
    # Reduce risk at the local level through prevention and mitigation.
    # Improve local planning and preparedness.
    # Improve the fire and emergency services’ capability for response to and recovery from all hazards.
    # Improve the fire and emergency services’ professional status.
    # Lead the Nation’s fire and emergency services by establishing and sustaining USFA as a dynamic organization.

The impact of the certification standards would be huge in relation to paid and volunteer departments alike. The long term effects of this proposition could prove fruitful especially for those who like to use the word “professional” a lot! This also plays a role in line item 4 of USFA’s current strategic plan “ # Improve the fire and emergency services’ professional status.”

You may think that the Fire Critic has set the bar to low with his proposal for the Top Chief spot, I think that we might have to take baby steps first though. You never know, I might want my old position back soon enough!

Honor, Remember, Learn, Share, and Teach…How to properly handle the Anniversary of the Charleston 9 and others

Last night on Firefighter Netcast, John and I recited the events surrounding three deadly fires surrounding this weekend, June 17th, and Fathers Day.

The Hotel Vendome in Boston – 9 Firefighters perished Thomas W. Beckwith, Joseph E. Boucher, Thomas J. Carroll, Charles E. Dolan, John E. Hanbury Jr., John E. Jameson, Richard B. Magee, Paul J. Murphy, Joseph P. Saniuk

The FDNY Fathers Day Fire – 3 Firefighters perished Harry S. Ford, Brian D. Fahey, John Downing

Charleston Sofa Super Store Fire – 9 Firefighters perished William “Billy” Hutchinson, Mike Benke, Louis Mulkey,  Mark Kelsey, Bradford “Brad” Baity, Michael French,  James “Earl” Drayton, Brandon Thompson, Melven Champaign

The best way (in my eyes) to honor the firefighters sacrifices is to Remember, Learn, Share, and Teach the events surrounding the deaths of our brothers.

If we don’t learn from these tragedies we fail to honor our brothers.

I was not around for the Hotel Vendome fire. I have learned about it. I was still a fairly new firefighter in my current department when the FDNY Fathers Day fire occurred but we discussed it at the station. I remember vividly when the Charleston Sofa Super Store fire occurred and I watched, listened, and learned as the news unfolded.

These aren’t the only ones, there are many others that I draw on from time to time to ensure that my brother and sister firefighters remember and have learned from the incidents.

I took this photo of the memorial to the firefighters who perished at the Hotel Vendome in Boston several years ago. The Hotel Vendome is in the background on the corner.

Heroic Ground Ladder Rescue in Poland

The video below shows numerous Polish firefighters rescuing two people from the third story of a building that is going pretty good. The firefighters set a ground ladder to rescue the civilians and the unthinkable happens.

The video is slow to start, stick with it as it quickly becomes a learning experience.

The firefighters didn’t really have many other options for a different outcome. The only thing I noticed that might not have been ideal is the angle of the ladder. In the conditions they were operating under they had to act swift though!

Check it out!

So here I am at work and What should I see? Plus comments on the Fatal Seattle Fire

I am working today. We had an eventful morning running about 5 calls in about 4 hours. Mostly the usual and a pickup truck on fire on the interstate. Needless to say that people CANNOT drive!

After lunch and a little bit of training I was trying to tie up some loose ends and I took a step into the watch room. I nearly lost my lunch when I walked in and found one of our Firefighter/Medics reading…..

Yes… You got it right. There he was reading STATter 911. You know, the fire service news blog run by the recently unemployed retired Dave Statter. What the hell am I chump change? Actually, this guy is a class act and keeps up on the fire service news pretty well!

It is hard to admit, but I am glad he was reading it. He filled me in on a fatal fire in Seattle that took the lives of 5 people.

People are pointing to response times. I must say that 5 minutes from the first call to the first engine being on scene is acceptable.

The firefighters were unable to get the engine into pump gear after several attempts.

What got my attention was this excerpt from the Seattle times article on the fire:

Asked Sunday why firefighters from Engine 18 didn’t then try to enter the burning unit to try to rescue the victims, Dean said crews are not allowed to enter burning buildings until water is being poured on a blaze.

“Having flames and fire on the first floor, they cannot proceed onto the second floor until they have got that fire out,” Dean said. “If you don’t put that fire out, you will have that fire follow you and burn you and your hose and remove your escape route also.” Read the entire article

I am certain that the firefighters on scene are beating themselves up. Equipment failures are going to happen. At times like these those failures CAN prove to be fatal. However, there may not be any way of knowing if any other actions would have had a better outcome.

As I have always said, the public will NEVER understand what we do.

Read the article on STATter911 here. It includes video, photos, and articles on the fire.

Hat tip to Nate Camfiord for this link posted on facebook!

Enjoy this 6 part series that is actually almost a year old. The great thing is that it is brand new if you have never seen it before! From the scooby sheets to the hula girl in the front of the rig…this is a great view of the Fire Service in America.

Video – Row House Fire in York, PA

This video has it all… Aerials, platforms, standing room only, electric lines being pulled, A fire related song playing, plenty of firefighters, and a great overview of the scene. The only thing it is missing is the fire itself. Kudos to the videographer. Unfortunately, he didn’t get on scene quick enough to catch fire blowing through the roof. Great video anyways!

Reported Meth Lab Fire in Phoenix

This fire is reported to have occurred in a building that was being used as a Meth lab.

Does your department have SOP’s for this type of situation?

New Media, Old Media, Pageviews, RSS Readers, Twitter Followers, Facebook Fans, Listeners…What does it all mean

I read a post yesterday about pageviews not mattering. I could not disagree more.

The post also spoke of rss readers and other viral readership via other social media mattering… To this I do agree, however pageviews matter more!

This is my main point: bloggers utilize facebook, twitter, rss feeds, youtube, podcasts, and many other social media outlets to garner readership and expand their reach of who sees the articles which are on the blog sites. All of this other “social media” usage is supposed to drive traffic back to their websites. That is the point. If you increase your scope of readership through social media, you will increase your traffic.

For instance, when I post an article a link is automatically posted on the facebook fan page and streamed through twitter. This typically includes the title and a link. It is my job to create a title that will entice the reader to click through to the blog and read what I have to say.

It stands to reason that the more the twitter followers or facebook fans then the increased chance of someone clicking through to the blog. The more the merrier. However, without those click throughs (as a blogger) you should be reevaluating your message, titles, and delivery.

The post I am referring to is Firefighter Blogging Behind the Scenes. Jay over at Firefighter Hourly has begun a campaign to move to the mainland after being out on an island by himself for so long…or so it seems. In the past, the blog has been out there by itself independent of all the great networking many other bloggers have enjoyed between each other. So many fire blogs feed off of each other via content links, twitter retweets, posting articles on each others facebook fanpages, emailing back and forth, and all around enjoying each others company online. Jay has taken a different approach. I am not exactly sure what the plan has been, but it seems as though he is changing his ways.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying he is doing anything wrong. I am just pointing out that by networking with other blogs and being in some of the circles I am in, the cross traffic proliferation of our messages has been easier. The networks I belong to are worthwhile and I have created many friendships along the way.

If you follow me on twitter or facebook, you will notice that it isn’t all about me or all about Fire Critic. It is about networking. I have always enjoyed helping out the little guy and still consider myself one of them…outside of all the jabs that some of my friends may take at my height.

In the end, the pageviews are what I measure my success by. What I write, what my readers read.

Oh yeah… and don’t forget that readers can’t click on advertisements if they don’t go to your site. Not all fire bloggers have monetized their blogs. The ones who have can’t get click throughs on advertising via twitter or facebook.

And just to be clear, I am not hung up on traffic. I enjoy my readership, but don’t really compare myself to anyone else. I post what I want when I want to. The reader gets to enjoy the serious stuff along with the fun stuff!

If you want to be successful, you have to use old media, new media, and social media!
