Firefighters Honor Two Fallen Virginia Brothers

On Friday we buried two Brother Firefighters from the Rocky Mount Fire Department in Virginia. Almost simultaneously, firefighters were burying two more fallen brothers in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Firefighters, Police Officers, Sheriffs Deputies, and other Public Safety Personnel from across Virginia and other States came to Rocky Mount to give our Brothers a final farewell.

The funerals for Chief Posey Dillon and Firefighter Danny Altice were a fitting tribute for the two men who had devoted most of their lives to public service.

First Due Blog Carnival Edition 5 – Minimum Standards (Deadline Extended)

You all get  a few more days for the Blog Carnival. If you have not sent in a submission be sure to do so soon!

I will be posting it on Monday. I have been busy here in VA and won’t get around to it until then.

For all the info check this link!

LODD: Fire Chief Posey Dillon and Firefighter Danny Altice of the Rocky Mount (VA) Volunteer Fire Department

This story has kept me busy that past few days. Another one of the web sites I run is VAFireNews.com. The State Fire News web site has kept up on all the news following the deadly crash between Rocky Mount Wagon 1A and an SUV.

There are plenty of issues related to this crash which can be debated and reported later.

Right now, we have two brothers to bury. We have friends to comfort. We have families to console. We have a 97 year old Volunteer Fire Department which has never had a LODD to help out.

Follow the following links to the story, obituaries, and details of the accident and our fallen brothers.

The links above have many other links to local news agencies coverage.

Monday Morning Shoutout – PGFD PIO Blog

This week’s Monday Morning Shoutout goes to the PGFD PIO Blog. Mark Brady is the PIO for Prince George’s County Fire Department in Maryland. His job, in my eyes, is one of the most difficult FD PIO jobs in the Nation.

Why the most difficult? In my eyes because of the sheer size of the County, number of departments, it being a combination department, as well as many of the news stories and scandals that have occurred there.

When I told Mark that I thought it was one of the most difficult he said that basically that is why he loved it. It is a challenge and he enjoyed it!

Check out the blog here. It might not be the prettiest, but it gets the job done!

Firehouse Expo 2010 Podcasting from the Exhibit Floor

John and I (Firefighter Netcast) have been busy recording podcasts at Firehouse Expo.

You can listen to our first available podcast with Robbie and Danny Owens here!

Robbie is a master firefighter for the Henrico County (VA) Division of Fire. Danny is a firefighter for the Richmond (VA) Department of Emergency Services. Together they run the Average Jake Firefighter Blog.

They are fans of Firefighter Netcast and we have had Robbie as a caller on several of our shows. These two brothers are great guys all around and students of all things related to new and improved firefighter tactics.

We had a blast interviewing the following today:

We have plenty of audio for you in the following days.

Enjoy these pictures as well!

Experience Firehouse Expo 2010

Firehouse Expo has been a blast so far.
John and I have recorded some great audio for Firefighter Netcast. We have been inviting various guests into our area within the FireGeezer/STATter911 booth for short interviews. The guests are usually on for 5-15 minutes.
Some of our guests have included:

We will be posting audio as soon as possible. We have a bunch to edit and then we will get it online. The internet connections we are finding are less than ideal.
We have a lot of thanks to give to Bill Schumm and Mike Ward of FireGeezer and Dave Statter as well. They have been more than gracious sharing their space. They have also been sending us some great guests!

Some House Fire Videos From Recent Days

2-Alarm Fire…Not sure where this one is from

July 8th 2010 @ 11:30 p.m, firefighters were called to a house fire in the 19300 block of 73B Avenue. When they arrived, they found the house fully involved with heavy fire in the roof area. A 2nd alarm was called bringing more firefighters to the scene. The fire is thought ot have started by a faulty barbecue.

House Destroyed In Woonsocket

Here is a well involved house fire in Woonsocket. The ladder pipe was placed into service as well as some handlines.

500 Gallons Will Only Go So Far

I am not sure where this video is from, one of the trucks says Lawrence Township on it. The house is fully involved upon arrival. A solid stream handline is deployed right away and unfortunately the water on the rig doesn’t last but so long (I am assuming 500 gallons). Either way, more or less, the water will only last so long until you get a hydrant. You can see towards the end of the video that the firefighter on the hydrant needs an adapter he has to get from the rig to make the connection.

Is This Really Valid Training? The Runaway Hoseline

I don’t remember this being part of my firefighter training. Maybe a cruel joke. I know that if someone asked me what I would do in this situation I would go to the pump panel instead of going to the end of this hoseline. Maybe there is a need for training like this…maybe not. You be the judge.

Roof Vent and Quick Egress From Fatal Fire In Abington Township

The video is news coverage, but it contains decent footage of firefighters quickly getting off the roof after venting it. This was a fatal fire. The roof ladder and K saw can be replaced! I think this might fall under the “Close Call” category!

Monday Morning Shoutout – Tactical Pants Blog

This weeks Monday Morning Shoutout goes to the Tactical Pants Blog. This blog is part of a larger web site for a company which specializes in tactical pants (BDU’s to many). You know, like 5.11 pants. More and more fire departments are going to these tactical pants for every day use. I don’t know if they do it now, but a department I know fairly well used to purchase seconds of some brand of tactical pants. The seconds are very cheap and need replacement frequently. Apparently there is cost savings somewhere in there. I am actually more of a fan of straight legged pants for everyday use (hint, hint…I wear navy blue and do product reviews right here at the Fire Critic)…I digress.

The main reason why I am showcasing the Tactical Pants Blog on the MMSO is because I like the way they have connected with the social media generation! They have gone beyond the blog to include a twitter account and a facebook fan page as well!

I can only imagine that this type of outreach, advertising, and sharing on social mediums has to be beneficial to their sales. That is just a hunch though!

The Tactical Pants Blog is updated regularly with information on their products, their company, and plenty of other stuff from other bloggers! Check them out!

Fire Critic and More at Firehouse Expo… Will you be there?

I will be at Firehouse Expo next week. John Mitchell and I will be hanging out together for more hi-jinx, fun, and humor intended to make one of us cry! Be sure to let us know if you will be there and we will catch up!

I will be there in the official capacity as co-host of Firefighter Netcast. However, if you follow me because of one of the other sites I run like VAFireNews.com be sure to catch up with me!

We will be hanging out with Dave Statter, Bill Schumm (FireGeezer), and Mike Ward (Fossil Medic) among others!

We probably won’t be doing any live netcasting. The only exception is we will be debuting Christopher Naum’s “Taking It To The Streets” live on July 21st at 9pm EST. The show’s topic will be “What’s on YOUR Radar Screen”?

Chris has become a great friend to not only John and I but also to Firefighter Netcast. His ability to teach and share his expertise in command safety and company officer development were a huge draw in getting him a show on Firefighter Netcast!

I plan on taking a lot of pictures at Firehouse Expo. I also plan on posting here at Fire Critic a good bit. Be sure to leave a comment if you want to meet up!

Naum's new show "Taking It To The Streets" as seen here in Times Square!!!

10 Questions on FirefighterSpot.com

FirefighterSpot.com is one of the premier sites to find the best firefighting video around. The site has been up for several years and has provided videos for training, learning, and close calls.

I was featured today on the column “10 Questions”. The column asks the same 10 questions to various firefighters around the Nation. What a great idea! I wish I had thought of it. Maybe I will create 11 questions! Just kidding.

Check out my answers here.

You can also view all of the past guests of “10 Questions” here.

Palo Alto Firefighters Aim for the City Charter

While this type of City legislation might be common, The Fire Critic has not heard of it before.

In a move that I think is very smart thinking, Palo Alto firefighters are attempting to get the City Charter changed to mandate staffing levels. This initiative was spurred by potential cutbacks.

“The staffing level that we currently have would be locked into the charter. The only way you could reduce one fire person would be for the entire city to vote and change the city charter. That’s how extreme this measure is,” said Burt.

I must say that the firefighters are thinking outside the box!

Monday Morning Shoutout – TNFireNews.com

This weeks Monday Morning Shoutout goes to TNFireNews.com.

You might not believe how much work goes into a State Fire News web site. There is a small breed of us who have created web sites for our State’s fire news. We have to rely on submitted content to make it work. Some have made a success of it, others have closed up shop. Still there are a couple who are trying to break through and make it work.

One of those sites is TNFireNews.com, Fire Service News for Tennessee. Another is ILFireNews.com. Both are independently run and join the likes of FireNews.net, SConFire.com, VAFireNews.com, Texas-Fire.com, and others. Several are regional sites instead of State sites and are just as popular like PhillyFireNews.com and HoopieWorld.com. I am sure I am missing a few great ones.

Andrew Catron is refocusing on TNFireNews.com. If you are in Tennessee, help him showcase your fire department by submitting news, events, photos, articles, and whatever else!

Keep up the great work Andrew!

First Due Blog Carnival: Call For Submissions – Edition 5 – Minimum Standards

Edition 5  of the First Due Blog Carnival asks the simple question: What should the minimum standards be for firefighters?

Some points to consider…

  • First off…did you realize that some States have NO standards at all for firefighters?
  • Should there be different standards for volunteer and career firefighters?
  • Should the minimum standard be up to Local, State, or Federal mandates?
  • Should this be a certification?
  • Should there be continuing education?
  • Should there be re-certification?

July’s First Due Blog Carnival is being hosted right here at The Fire Critic! Please plan on submitting your content to me by July 28th. The 5th edition will be posted right here on the 30th!

If you don’t know what the First Due Blog Carnival is read this first. If you would like to post something but do not have the forum (blog or otherwise) to do so please let me know and I will publish it here or get someone else to.

Controlling The Fire Service Media…Bloggers Keep The News Flowing!

Firehouse.com, FireEngineering.com, FireRescue1.com, FirefighterNation.com, and many other web sites are great places to get your news and opinion. Some of them have magazines in print which have been around much longer. Print magazines are great for news and information, but cannot compete with the more instant ability to publish online.

Fire and/or EMS service blogs can be another form of online news site. Maybe not all blogs publish news all the time, but most do from time to time.

Probably the epitome of fire service news blogs are STATTer911.com or FireGeezer.com, although any other blogs cover news events from around the world.

The news doesn’t have to be breaking news either. Many bloggers are great writers and offer free original content on their sites. Take Chris Naum’s CompanyOfficer.com and CommandSafety.com, Mick Mayer’s FirehouseZen.com, or Art Goodrich’s ChiefReason.com. They all offer top notch writing and insight.

Naturally, the larger media companies created blogs. Firehouse.com and FireEngineering.com offer blogs from some of their contributing editors. FireRescue1 and FirefighterNation took a little bit different route.

FireRescue1.com came up with the Kitchen Table; a conglomerate of bloggers which for the most part offers syndicated material from the authors own blog hosted elsewhere.

FirefighterNation.com is a hybrid site. Part message board, part news site, part blog network, part social network site. They offer blogs for any member who wants to publish in the format. In addition, FireEMSBlogs.com was loosely created out of the site.

What I have found most interesting is how many bloggers will break news stories, write articles, or other information that soon after you will see in the mainstream fire service media.

Sure, it is given that if a news story breaks that the mainstream fire service media is going to cover it. However, what is ironic is the other stuff. Articles written on various topics are obviously read and then soon after you will see another article on the topic in one of the larger media outlets.

I have about 5 examples from the last month…including stuff heard over podcasting later to be revealed in an article elsewhere.

It just goes to show that bloggers matter and are doing a great job! Keep up the great work…

Matt Koval Has Some Funny Video on Youtube!

Matt and Kevin Spacey after the Triggerstreet.com awards.

We have all seen some great video on youtube. There are some hilarious people out there posting original comedy on their own youtube channels. Matt Koval is one of those guys. I actually met him in Baltimore at EMS Today. He was doing some video work for Dave Iannone and Chris Hebert. I have posted links to some of the video from that in the past.

Oh…did I mention that Matt used to be a volunteer firefighter for Hyattsville VFD in Prince Georges County, Maryland. Keep up the great work Matt!

You can catch up with Matt at MattKoval.com, his facebook fan page, imdb, or his youtube channel!

His newest venture is a youtube series “The Fuplers”. One of those episodes is below.

Matt Koval has some very hilarious videos on his site, I will give you a taste with the following:

Part II of the Black Diamond X Boot Product Review

If you didn’t check out the first part of my product review on the brand new X boot by Black Diamond please check it out here first.

Part one had to do with my first impressions of the boot. This post is part two… what I thought about the boot after wearing it.

Edited: The boots that were reviewed were the X boot. The review for the X2 boot will be forthcoming.

I have been wearing my boots since the beginning of May. I must confess that I am an engine driver, so my chances of interior firefighting are few and far between. However, as luck would have it we had a fire last day (Friday) and I was riding the seat while my Captain was down the street at another station doing HAZMAT training.

X2 Boot integrated pull on system.

I got to wear the boots on numerous EMS calls, MVA’s, fire alarms and one fire. In short, I think that I gave these boots plenty of wear for a decent review of use. After all, we don’t fight fire day in and day out…unless you are one of these know it all trolls on the message boards!

I swapped my new X boots out with my other bunker boots and was very pleased with several things. I am a huge fan of the integrated pull on system. No longer do I have to worry about the leather sewn on straps breaking. I look for this to become an industry standard soon enough.

X boot reinforced toe cap

Another issue that the X boot has seemed to tackle is the toe cap. Most of the boots I have worn for firefighting have had some sort of reinforced toe cap. Some have performed over time, others have disintegrated. Once the reinforced toe cap is gone, the toe cap is is exposed and will wear through down to the steel toe. Crawling around on concrete is probably the worst offender of wearing down the toe cap.

This little flag does not reside in the X Boot. They are made in China. This could be a deal breaker for some. It does however reside in the boots that the Xboot replaced in my everyday turnout gear.

The X boot has a very durable, thick, and harder than other reinforced toe cap. I have not been able to impede the reinforcement through normal wear and tear.

When I was contacted about doing a product review on these boots I had to guess as to which size would be perfect for me. I chose my normal shoe size. The truth is that I should have gotten them a half size bigger. I say this because the biggest issue other than them being made in China is that they are a little difficult getting them off when my socks and pants were soaking wet after a fire.

The boots come with a 3 point heel locking system. Basically it is built this way to keep your foot from moving around inside the boot when you walk. It works!

My X Boots inside my pants are next to my other boots. As you can see, the other boots lay over a little bit. The X Boots have yet to lay over at all and are a very sturdy boot!

The boots are also very sturdy. I have not noticed any bit of them wanting to lay over when the pants are sitting pulled down around them. Some other models with less sturdy build will fold over and you have to straighten them out to pull them on. These boots remain ready to go all the time!

These boots are extremely comfortable, durable, and should last a long time. I will continue wearing my X boot and use my other ones as backups!

Great job Black Diamond…The Fire Critic says they passed the test!

Of course I cannot let you get by without another look at the Black Diamond babes!

The Fire Critic offers product reviews. Please visit this page for details on how to get your product reviewed and what our policy is on reviews.

Apparently June was a great month for idiots! I have to admit I love watching this stuff. However, If find myself cringing through most of it. I just don’t get what some of these people get out of punishing themselves so bad.

Enjoy!
