Update: One firefighter involved in this incident has passed away. The other is currently in surgery.
A Prince George’s County career firefighter has been killed and a volunteer firefighter critically wounded during a response Friday evening to check on the welfare of a man at a Temple Hills home. The career firefighter/paramedic has been identified as John Ulmschneider. Firefighter/Paramedic Ulmschneider was 39 years old, and a 13 year veteran of the department.
The volunteer firefighter, Kevin Swain, was on the engine company. He is a member of Morningside VFD, Station 827. Firefighter Swain is in surgery at the Maryland shock-trauma center in Baltimore. He is listed as a live-in firefighter at the Morningside station.

Two firefighters were shot while responding to a call for a welfare check in Prince George’s County, MD. One of those firefighters remains in critical condition and the other in serious condition.
Firefighters were responding to a medical call and shots were fired when they approached a house in the 5000 block of Sharon Road, Prince George’s County Fire Department spokesperson Mark Brady told News4.
The shooting took place at about 8 p.m., Brady said. News4’s Jackie Bensen reports one shooter was involved. Read more
