Best of the Rest – Harrisburg, FDIC, FDNY Rescue, Botetourt County Heats Up Again

It has been busy…

I just finished up promotional testing for 1st Lt. and Captain in my department. We had practical testing yesterday and I feel good about it. It could have been much better, but I am pleased with my performance.

If you have information to share, be sure to get it to me.

The Fire Critic Facebook Page is constantly pumping out great info, sharing YOUR questions with “Mutual Aid Question from a Brother” posts, and more.

The Fire Critic on Facebook

FDIC

Michael Smith of Boron Extrication climbed with me at the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb. He actually got to meet a family member of the man he was climbing for, Joseph Agnello. Michael didn’t get the contact information and is looking for John Agnello, Joseph’s cousin. Michael’s post is a moving tribute to Ladder 118 and Joseph Agnello. Read it here, and help him out in contacting John.

Progress Fire Expo Bash 2013

Harrisburg Fire Expo

Captain Wines will be on the road later today. He is heading to Harrisburg, PA for the Fire Expo. Unfortunately, I am unable to make the trip. I will be working for Willie on Friday so he can though. He plans on catching up with the Progress Fire Bash 2013. The Firehouse Dolls will be there too. Captain Wines is travelling with his wife and I think the Buckaroo…I have officially been replaced! Be sure to welcome him in PA. I have wanted to make the trip for this event for years, I guess it will have to wait until next year.

What’s Next?

Captain Wines and I plan on attending Firehouse Expo in Baltimore and Fire Rescue International in Chicago. On top of that, we have an engagement in New York State with the Capital Region FOOLS in September. Check out their Facebook Page here. We also have heard of tentatively being asked to speak at the Canadian Volunteer Firefighters Convention in Ottawa. We look forward to hearing more about that soon.

Botetourt County, VA

You might remember Captain Wines in-depth writing about issues within the Botetourt County, VA Fire & EMS…most notably some of the issues with the Buchanan VFD and their former Chief Billy Joe Carter. I am not sure, but I believe Carter is still incarcerated. Things are heating up again in Botetourt, this time with relation to their Fire/EMS Director Carr Boyd who is in the process of resigning. Willie and I are still working on the details, but it seems as though another one of Botetourt’s Volunteer Chiefs is behind forcing Boyd out. Troutville VFD’s Chief who is reportedly also a felon has apparently been a thorn in the side of the forward thinking Fire/EMS Director. Look for an article from Willie about this fiasco soon at IronFiremen.com.

22 Years ago, one of the most prolific rescues occurred in New York City.

Best of the Rest – ESS Review, VES Helmet Cam, Terrible FF & Leader?, Promotions, and My New Thinking Cap

Right now is the busiest time of the year for me. It starts when Lacrosse season begins (I am the coach of a team of 23 U11 players). I do it because they don’t have enough coaches and because my son plays. I don’t even have an assistant coach. I am not the best coach in the World, but I think I get the job done.

On top of that, FDIC was just held in Indianapolis. Last year, FDIC was a blast and when I got back I felt as though I was stuck under a heap of work…that heap never let up. I have the same issue this year, and again I never dug myself out of the work last year.

I am managing though. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Currently, we are behind on about 8 reviews over at FireProductReview.com. The ESS Eye Pro review is complete and can be seen here. The 1st in Leather review will be up later today.

Keep me informed of what is going on. I try to keep up, but it isn’t happening. If you want information shared on “Best of the Rest”, email me or contact me another way.

The video below is VES Helmet Cam video out of Colorado Springs, CO. More info on it here: IronsandLadders.com offers a view and commentary on a Vent-Enter-Search (VES) Video in the latest post. Read it here.

PGFDPIO.Blogspot.com:

This story was authored by a Prince George’s County Firefighter that suffered severe burn injuries while battling a house fire in Kettering four years ago.  A firefighter that had sustained such horrific burn injuries we were not sure he was going to survive.  He did survive and than we became concerned that he would never be able to return to work as a firefighter again, he did.  On the fourth anniversary of his sustaining burn injuries he has shared, on his Facebook page, his thoughts as he remembers them and we have reprinted them here.

Public Safety Confessions on Facebook – a new page has sprouted up and I am wondering what you all think about it. Here is the idea behind it:
It is a “confessions page”. People who need to vent or bitch out a person with out actually publicly doing so can. We have a anonymous survey up so anyone can submit a confession and then I post it to FB. It can never be tracked back to the person. These confessions pages are all the rage on college campuses. Way for kids to vent about school, and professors and life as a student. There are a few rules including: no mentioning people by name, no saying exact depts, no talk of doing illegal activity, no harassment.

Backstep Firefighter has a several must read articles.

  • Bill Carey writes about the need to discuss Line of Duty Deaths and how to do it respectfully. The topic is taboo to many of us, but we must not fail to learn from the loss of our Brother and Sister Firefighters. Read “Never Ask The Dead”.
  • Dave LeBlanc also writes on the topic in a piece titled “You Can’t Handle The Truth”
  • Both pieces speak of Line of Duty Deaths. Backstep Firefighter recently ran a piece on the topic describing some differences in reporting Line of Duty Deaths titled “On Duty & Line of Duty: What is the Difference?

Firehouse Zen discusses the recent events at Miami-Dade, Florida in his post titled “Listen to What You Are Saying“. He provides links to the whole story if you haven’t heard about it yet.

Dave Statter looks at a video of a mobile home fire that claims the Fire Department didn’t respond in Bradley, WV. Read about it here.

Speaking of Dave Statter, am I the only one who wishes Ellerbe would resign just so we can stop seeing his name on STATter911.com?

Thanks to Jeff at FireNews.net for the heads up. This appeared in the March issue of Fire Rescue Magazine. Very cool! Thanks

The Best of the Rest is a resource for firefighters that puts some of the best news, information, and most importantly articles from other blogs in one place. The column runs just about every week (depending on time) and is typically posted on Tuesdays. Some articles I find on my own, others are sent to me.

It is the busiest part of the year for me. Lacrosse season starts today. I coach my son on U11 and along with my daughter playing and her cheerleading, my wife and I are about to enjoy something like 10 practices covering 7 days of the week. Along with work, I will do my best to keep FireCritic.com up to date as I typically do. Keep sending in your info.

I will be giving away a Phenix TL2 helmet from Leatherhead Projects. Check them out. I will have all of the information on the giveaway very soon. We are hoping to give the helmet away on St. Patrick’s Day.

Knotts Island Fire Chief Scott Morrison died while on scene of a brush fire on Sunday. Read more about it here. Scott was a friend of mine and many people I know. It is amazing to hear from everyone who knew him. He was such a great guy and a great Fire Chief as well. I will update with funeral arrangements when I get them.

Firefighter Nation has a story about how fire poles are slowly being replaced by slides. I wrote about this back in 2009 and found the trend interesting. We don’t have any near us, but I have seen more and more in use across the U.S. Read Firefighter Nations article here.

Paul W Hewitt Jr shared this photo on the Fire Critic FB page:  Bloomingdale VFD: These were our conditions upon arrival on Sunday night. House was fully involved and due to all the hydrants were not working so we initiated a tanker task force to shuttle water in. All in all everything went good it was just a surround and drown for 3 hrs until we could get it mostly out then it turn offensive

Mark vonAppen writes about “Gold Stars”…or his second coming as a firefighter when he realized there was so much more available in learning our craft outside the confines of our own departments. Read about it here.

Average Jake Firefighter offers a view that goes along with Mark’s above. “Mr. Perfect” is how some others think of those of us who put ourselves out there via blogs and social media. He assures you that is not the case. Read about it here.

Here is an article about my department. It seems as though all of the old firehouses will be gone in time…It probably won’t be overnight though.

Brandon Roark talks about Feagle on The Model City Firefighter new column “Blowin’ Smoke“. I should definitely be reading more of Feagle’s articles!

Fire Chief offers and article on “How to Combat Firefighter Obesity“. While I may not verbalize it much on this site and elsewhere, I cannot stand seeing obese firefighters. It is counterproductive to our purpose.

Short and sweet update today. If you remember, Willie and I were interviewed for the 100th episode of “Caught on Camera” on MSNBC. It should be airing in the next couple of weeks, but I am not sure exactly. Hopefully we sound like we know what we are talking about!

The Fire Critic Facebook page continues to stay busy with “Questions from a Brother”…I am currently backlogged about a dozen questions. Hopefully I will get to each one of them. Keep track of what is going on by checking out the Fire Critic Facebook Page here.

I admit that one of the coolest things about The Fire Critic Facebook Page is the questions that the readers ask me either via message or on the page. They want answers. They want the truth. They can’t handle..alright enough of that. The questions range from broad to detailed and encompass the entire scope of Fire & EMS. I appreciate the questions and try to share every one of them on the page. You will see them in the form of a question followed by [ - Question from a Brother]. Keep them rolling. The last one I put up was one I thought of all on my own (I do that occasionally…think that is). The question “Do you wear your wedding ring on duty? Why or why not?” is sitting at 207 comments.

If you are on Facebook, you want to check out and “Like” our page!

Rom Duckworth writes at Rescue Digest. Recently he belted out an excellent article on Brotherhood and then he followed that up with an article about The Fire Critic and Iron Firemen. It is nice to get a little press every now and again. We met Rom in Denver last year at FRI, although that might not have been the first time. Thanks Rom!

Paul Hasenmeier is taking notes from Captain Wines and writing about his firehouse life. His blog First Due Tackle’s latest post is about the rookie, or as he has earned the nickname Sweat Bee. Learn how he earned that nickname here.

MN8 FoxFire has a new shirt out “Real Women Love Firefighters, The Rest Marry Cops”. Check out the new shirt here.

Curt Varone has a “nutty” story “Foolish Act in Ohio Creates New Nightmare for New Colorado Chief“. Curt features the legal side of things on his blog interestingly titled Fire Law Blog. I think the story is NUTS! ha

Rescuing Providence is passing along some great information from the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and Everyone Goes Home Program. RESPONSE TO VIOLENT INCIDENTS: Nine Questions You Should Ask. Questions inspired by 2012 Violent Incident Summit with IAFC, CFSI, NFFF, NFPA & NVFC.  Read more about it here.

Dave Statter has an interesting story about Firefighters having some fun and others finding it to be hazing. I think where they went wrong was going out in public with the messed up hair-cuts. We have to at least look professional! Read about it here.

The Disputanta VFD (VA) is the latest to offer great helmet camera footage. They even used some dash camera footage in this house fire video from the 16th of January. Check out the video here.

FireGeezer has the story about 50% something EMS is messed up in Detroit. Am I the only one who feels horrible for these guys? We read every day about how freakin bad it is up there….is there any light at the end of the tunnel? Read about the latest news here.

The National Firefighters Endowment is proud to present a check on behalf of the Officers Club, to Union Deposit Fire Company #47, to purchase new air cylinders. These air cylinders will allow their firefighters to safely enter hazardous conditions to perform life and property saving services to their community. Check out more on the story here.

Benjamin A. Metzger, represented the Officers Club, presented the Union Deposit Fire Company #47 their check for $5000.

I will leave you with a two alarm chimney fire in North Whitehall, PA

Willie is hanging out with Zach and Kelly down in Daytona, Florida this week. As usual, they are having a blast. Unfortunately, I am not with them. I am still in Virginia. This weekend, the family is heading to Richmond (my old stomping ground) for my daughters cheerleading competition. More than likely, Preston and I will be tooling around Richmond looking for some trouble to get into at some point in time.

If you were paying attention to the Fire Critic Facebook Page (nearing 20k fans), you probably notices all of the pictures of firefighters boots. I cannot believe the outpouring of support for our Brother Willie Wines Jr. The reason for the boots was to show support for our Brother in getting back to work. The good news is that he will be back to work soon and is all set to get back with a note from the City Doctor. The even greater news is that he is on vacation for a couple of days and is down in Florida!

You will also notice two new advertisers on FireCritic.com. Both GloveCrafters.com and FireVideo.net (Fire Cam) are advertising with us now. If you get a chance, check them out. Both have excellent products!

I haven’t had the time to put together a “Best of the Rest” post in several weeks. Therefore, there is a ton of links below…and there are even more that I have missed.

There are only a few days left to get the 20% off at FatIvan. They have a brand new product out as well!

Lexington, Kentucky had an apparatus roll on its side due to icy roads today. No firefighters were injured in the accident. Engine Company 8 is located in the Northside of the City. The images were shared by Captain A of Truckie Talk (FB link).

Life has been busy the past week. I took 2/3 of the cyle off for Thanksgiving…It is nice to have seniority (although I am working Christmas day). I also took off from FireCritic.com and didn’t even fire up the computer for 3 days. Thanks to my new iphone I can do a lot mobile. It is refreshing after my droid x that hardly even worked anymore.

Here is a very short but sweet Best of the Rest!

First a note about the photo albums on FireCritic.com:

The photo albums on FireCritic.com have been a huge hit. To be included, all you have to do is send your pictures (and info if you want) to firecritic@firecritic.com. You can send any photos you would like relating to fire and/or EMS. Specifically, pictures of firefighter kids, license plates, crews, firehouses, rigs, helmets, random pics, custom kitchen tables, and holiday photos. I run the photo articles once I have enough pictures in the categories.

Engine 802 & Tanker 804 at a chicken house fire on 11/24/12 took a county wide page and mutual aid from another county $800k loss. took 5hrs to contain it. Luckily no chickens were there at the time. Cause of fire was a pressure washer exploding. No injuries. This was in Hickory Valley in White County, TN. It took a county wide page of ten districts and mutual aid from Van Burean County for tanker support. Shared by Zach Brock.

The days keep getting busier. My daughters competitive cheerleading is in full swing and my son begins basketball tonight. If you follow the Fire Critic on Facebook, I mentioned I got in an accident in the engine yesterday. Everyone is fine. There was minor damage to the engine and the car. The engine did not go out of service, although we missed the call were responding to when it happened.

I am gearing up for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I have vacation for Thanksgiving and I think we are spending it with my wife’s family in Richmond. I will be in Richmond that weekend and might have some time to get out. If anyone wants to catch up let me know.

In the spirit of Christmas, I put together the yearly Top Ten Christmas Gifts for Firefighters List. Check it out here!

Also in the spirit of Christmas, I am looking for companies who would like to take advantage of a cheap and easy marketing program…more on that here!

Product Review of the Week – Dragon Fire Alpha X Structural Firefighting Glove

The Dragon Fire Alpha X Structural Firefighting glove was reviewed by Captain Willie Wines Jr. including comments by myself. As we found out after the review, the glove has a huge following and is used widely in the fire service. We now know why.

The Dragon Fire glove is thinner than most traditional firefighting gloves yet still offers a level of protection that exceeds NFPA standards. The fingers had a good fit and were not bulky. This allowed for good dexterity and “feel”. - Captain Wines

It continues to be very busy for everyone it seems. From Hurricane Sandy, to the recent LODD’s, to voting and putting up with all of the campaigning…throw in normal life, our families, the change in weather, Thanksgiving coming up, and Christmas around the corner. The end of 2012 is going out just as busy as it began this year. A lot of my friends on Facebook are doing some sort of 30 days of thanks. I imagine this leads up to Thanksgiving, but I must have missed the memo on it. I can tell you, as far as The Fire Critic goes, I am thankful for the loyal readers, fans, and friends which continues to grow each day. The Fire Critic Facebook Fan Page recently reached the 7000+ mark. This is quite the accomplishment considering that we had around half of that this time last year.

In case you missed two of the most popular articles of the year, I recently completed the Top Ten List for both Male and Female Firefighting Calendars. View them by the links below.

Top Ten Female CalendarsTop Ten Male Calendars

It has been so busy, I have not been able to do a “Best of the Rest” in several weeks. This post always takes a little time to put together and if I don’t have the time it doesn’t get completed. You can check out previous “Best of the Rest” articles here, they are chock full of info and links! If you would like to know how to be featured in the “Best of the Rest” it is simple…send me your stuff!

Shoutout – The “Model City” Firefighter

The “Model City” Firefighter is a blog created by a good friend and Brother Andrew Catron. He is doing a great job with this new venture. Much like a lot of the newer blogs who are able to “make it” longer than the honeymoon of being a new blogger wears off, he has paid attention to those of us who have been doing this for a while.

Keep up the great work Andrew!

Product Review of the Week

Glove Crafters Fire Armor Structural Firefighting Gloves

The Fire Armor Gloves might be the most comfortable firefighting gloves I have ever worn. They offer full dexterity due to the Five separate curved form fitting forchettes (see below). The materials used in the construction of gloves is very soft and doesn’t constrict the use of your hands at all.

The best part of FireProductReview.com is that you get to rate the products as well!

I still have so much to catch up on. I swear I need to hire some staff to keep this blog going…I guess you just never know where this blog will be in a couple of years.

The first “Motley Crews” column was posted the other day. Check it out here. If you want your photos shared on FireCritic.com be sure to email them to firecritic@firecritic.com.

The biggest news of the week is that the Fire Critic/Iron Firemen shirts are now available. They are being made by our friends at Crosstitched. The shirts are made in the USA on US made shirts…and get this…the price is only $15. We were amazed at how easy the crew at Crosstitched were to work with. They made the entire process so simple and created the shirt we wanted! Special thanks to our Brother Nate Camfiord for taking the time to watch us pose and snap some great photos!

“Hey Brother” Fire Critic/Iron Firemen shirts available now!

Shoutout – Crosstitched

About Crosstitched products: Crosstitched understands what it takes to make a great product.  We spared no expense in the making of our apparel. All of our shirts are pre shrunk, and printed with discharged inks.  This means the ink is printed into the shirt, keeping it’s soft feel.  With this process you will not have that plastic like feel, and it will not crack or fade.  We take pride in our product, and have not sacrificed quality, to cut costs. You deserve the very best.

Product Review of the Week – Wolfpak Leatherworks

IronFiremen.com – How to Kill a Fire Department. Captain Wines rants about FD Leadership killing the morale in a fire department. Low morale leads to no confidence in an administration. High morale motivates a Department to perform to higher standards. That said, leaders who are well respected, who have worked through the ranks and understand the feelings, needs and sacrifices of  their members are better equipped to motivate those members. They understand that even the little things can make a big difference. They know that it’s better to tell the hard truth rather than leading the members on with misgivings, deceptions  and lie after lie. They understand that as firefighters, we can handle the bad news …. we see it everyday! Read more here

Captain Wines and I with some new coins and patches from David Lee Pfeil Jr.

They were sent to us by Brother David Lee Pfeil Jr of the Fort Detrick, Forest Glen Fire and Emergency Services Station #54 in Maryland.
He is also IAFF Local F-151

I cannot do this shoutout any more justice than their words:

“5280Fire’s Buffs are not fire paparazzi, stringers or fire truck chasers. Never do we wish for property to burn, and hate loss as much as the firefighters we document. Our personal mission is to capture their moments of triumph that can seldom be seen in the mainstream media. 5280Fire’s contributors are 100% volunteer. Just like our forefathers we’re found in the dark early morning hours, bearing the harsh winters to continue this great tradition.”

Thanks to Brother Brush for the idea for this shoutout

Training

The Hose Jockey – Training for the Fight.

“As firefighters, we all know the common apprehensions associated with in house or even academy sponsored training. Many firefighters fear they will fail, feel that they will learn nothing, or that it is only for people who haven’t been there and done that. One problem I see is that many departments or companies decide to train only to “check the box”. We all know ISO, NFPA or the CFAI require a certain commitment to company level or department sanctioned training in order to remain compliant, but many of us lose the opportunity to make these sessions meaningful.”

Shoutout

This week’s shoutout goes to Box Alarm Leather (on FB here) and Commercial Solutions (on FB here) for offering the gifts we are giving away on Facebook right now. I set out when we reached 5000 fans to do something. Both of these companies stepped up to the plate and offered stuff without me asking. What more can I ask for? Hell, just tonight I reached 6000 fans. That is 1000 fans in just a week or two. Not bad. The sweepstakes is located here on Facebook. You can enter once a day and the more you share it on Facebook (you will be prompted) the more chances you have to win. So far we have given away a Dragon Fur FR fleece skull cap, a bunker gear bag, and a streamlight tactical flash light. There is plenty more to give away.

Speaking of giving away…The National Firefighters Endowment is also doing a give – a – way…They are giving away a truck! Vote & Enter to win your choice of a new Ford or Chevy truck. 50% of your donation will go directly to support the fire department you vote for. The department with the most votes will win an additional $5,000 equipment grant from National Firefighters Endowment. More information on this here.

Leatherhead 109. I got to meet him in Denver. Great guy…writes very well too. This post “Warrior Poets” I picture him standing yelling this speech in a bar with a pint in hand…and everyone listened. I quote: “We should not seek to dance in beer halls half naked in our bunker pants like some in the news lately, not to flex our muscles on calendar glossies, not to wear “I fight what you fear” shirts or worse yet, that we terrorize our recruits in the firehouse with pranks that defy common sense in this modern age, or paint our elected official’s faces on bathroom stalls…need I go on?  Where is the honor and integrity in these acts?  Such behavior reflects the depth of depravity our society plunges to.” Read the rest here

STATter911.com has a video of 6000 ft. of 5″ hose being laid for training. He also has the story of a former DCFD Chief whose house burned twice in 36 hours. More on that here.

Fire Service Warrior – Being that guy by Kevin Stokes. “You will without a doubt encounter hurdles and others who will discourage you along this road. Pay these people no attention. After all, giving up is easy. But remember, you are not most people; you are “that guy.” Keep fighting the good fight. Take things you learn and keep them in the back of your mind to either apply when you can, or save for the day when you are in a position to influence the way others do things.”

I just got home from Denver on Sunday night. The Denver area is beautiful. There are some great firefighters in the area as well. As a matter of fact, I believe the statistics are something like 7,000 firefighters in the Denver area representing 10,000 fire departments.

Captain Wines and I had a blast meeting so many friends. Some we had met before, and many others we were meeting for the first time. You can read about Willie’s experience here. You can view all of the photographs from the event on the Fire Critic Facebook photo album.

Keep sending photos, video, events, news, and information to me. I enjoy sharing the content and am working on several more columns here on the site! Message me on Facebook or email me at firecritic@firecritic.com.

Training

I will take a minute in the “Training” section to go over some gear that I think all of you should have. Each week, I typically add a link to some great training. On top of that, there is typically something about fitness in this post somewhere else (this week it is the Paul Combs cartoon below).

This week I would like to point out Ride Backwards. Ride Backwards is an apparel company that has created and/or supported a movement of fit firefighters. Check out Ride Backwards online, on Facebook, Youtube, and check out their firefighter athletes here! Ride Backwards has been a huge steward for the fire service…Keep up the great work! Plus, one of our good friends Walter Patterson is a Ride Backwards athlete!

News and Opinion

Thanks to David Lee Pfeil Jr. for these patches and coins for Willie and I. I will be sending him our patch and coin.

Atlanta recruits suffered heat exhaustion this past week. What I found interesting was the apparent disconnect between Atlanta’s Chief and firefighting as written in the article.

Quoting the article:

“It is alarming to us. We hear about this happening to football players this time of year with football practice, but never with firefighters,” Cochran said. “Two of them were what we called heat exhaustion and one of them entered into the more severe stage of heat stroke.”

You meant to tell me the Chief of Atlanta Fire Department, and the same Chief who just won an award at Fire Rescue International has never heard of firefighters suffering from heat ehaustion in the dead of Summer? Huh? Was this a misquote?

Firefighter Close CallsBackdraft in San FranciscoSan Francisco firefighters battling a blaze in a commercial building narrowly escaped serious injury Tuesday morning when an explosion sent a fireball of hot gas rocketing out a door they had just opened, authorities said.

IronFiremen.com – Getting High and Rocking Fire Rescue International 2012. It was another GREAT show and experience for us. We have a good time anywhere we go but this trip was AWESOME! If you didn’t make it, start planning now to join us in 2013 back in Chicago.

Paul Combs – Hearing, but not listening. Heart disease, stroke, hypertension, diabetes, certain types of cancer, arthritis, sleep apnea, stress, lack of agility, back injuries… the list of injury and devastating health problems due to obesity is long!

FireGeezer – More Firefighters “Stepping in it”. SEVERAL JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA, FIREFIGHTERS, including a lieutenant and a district chief, are under investigation for serious violations of behavioral and ethics standards.  The incident took place last week at a night club called Whiskey River where a fund-raiser was held for the family of a JFD firefighter who had died recently in an off-duty accident. FC thought: If they were in personally owned gear not identifying the JFRD then it should be a mute point. That doesn’t mean it is the smartest thing to do!

Seattle FD Firefighters Facebook picture cause a stir

Fire Service Warrior – Taking it Personally by Gary Lane. Time to get with the program and take things personal. I am offended that you think so little of our fellow citizens that you didn’t work out and exercise today.  I am offended that you found 10 reasons not to train today all from the comfort of a leather recliner. I am offended that I PERSONALLY WASN’T MORE POSITIVE AND INFLUENTIAL in making our team stronger, our department better and our citizens safer today.

Patrick Mackay - The CMC MPD…Versatility For FD Rope Rescue Operations. Several months ago I decided to purchase several new pieces of rope rescue hardware for my volunteer firehouse.  By far, the CMC MPD(Multi-Purpose Device) has proved to be the most versatile hardware we have added to our equipment cache.  I’m not a salesman, nor am I getting any kind of kickback from CMC.  However, the CMC MPD has simplified our rigging and has removed many of the human error components from our rope rescue operations.  With that said, I still believe folks providing Rescue services should be proficient in more than one way to complete tasks and be able to work with more hardware than just a CMC MPD.

Rochester firefighters expected to move into West Brighton firehouse in couple days. In a letter to the Rochester City Council on Monday, James McTiernan, president of the Rochester Fire Fighters Association Local 1071, said that the Rochester Fire Department is understaffed, and the agreement with the town of Brighton would “spread the resources of the RFD even thinner.” Covering West Brighton, he said, would increase the department’s geographical coverage area by 25 percent.

Backstep Firefighter – So What Are We Supposed To Do? Based on the finding by the committee performing the Investigation, the Worcester should have used VSP (Victim Survivability Profiling) to limit the exposure to risk of firefighters in searching for a victim, a victim that was reported to be in the building by an occupant, a building that historically doesn’t collapse under fire conditions.

This week, Willie and I will be joining Zach and Kelly of MN8 FoxFire in Denver for Fire Rescue International. I have not been in Denver since World Youth Day in 1993. I traveled with my church youth group. Hopefully Denver is ready for me again!

Whether you are in Denver or not, click this link and donate $25 to climb in the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb. I have climbed before. I was unable to climb in Baltimore at Firehouse Expo, yet I did pay the $25 to climb. The money benefits the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. This years climb in Denver at FRI is tomorrow, August 1st at 1pm. The event will be held at the Hyatt Regency. Click here to donate or sign up!

If everything goes well, we might make it to Colorado Springs to see the IAFF Fallen Firefighter Memorial when we get in to town.

Check out Black Hat Radio online and on Facebook. Word is that he interviewed Bob Gard about the SD Firefighter Benefit tonight. You should be able to listen to that soon.

Redefining the Engine Company – Christopher Huston

The engine company is the fire service staple, regardless of whether it is an engine company from an urban city or a small rural town. The engine company is typically the first piece of equipment on scene. The crew onboard must be proficient at multitasking since they arrive first and significant time may elapse before additional personnel arrive. Every corner of the fire service has seen changes over the past few years. Whether the change is inadequate staffing, an increase in medical calls, or a decrease in volunteer numbers, the standard responses of yesterday have changed the game. The engine company needs to be redefined.

“We Don’t Stop” by Jonah Smith on Fire Service Warrior

“At FDIC this year, a mantra was developed by a few of the members of this community. The mantra is a way to live in our professional and personal lives. The mantra is “we don’t stop.” Of course, the question of “starting when?” was brought up, and the response was “starting now!” I have always felt I lived this way since I feel like I can’t sit still for more than a few minute unless physically restrained. However, the tone of this conversation was geared more towards our behavior throughout both personal and professional undertakings through the course of our lives.” continue reading

IAFC - May 8…  Dress Uniforms – every firefighter deserves one, but does every firefighter want one? That’s a question the IAFC’s Volunteer & Combination Officers Section (VCOS) would like to get answered. If it turns out that every firefighter wants one but the only thing holding them back is the cost, we’ll move forward with a very ambitious program we’re calling “Got You Covered: A Dress Uniform on Every Firefighter.”  The target of “Got You Covered” is small volunteer or combination fire departments. The goal is to provide access to dress uniforms at a nominal cost through solicitation of corporate sponsors. What we need first is some data and we hope you’ll help by taking a brief online survey to answer some questions about dress uniforms.

Renowned artist and firefighter Allan Albaitis was generous enough to donate his artwork to National Firefighters Endowment for this limited mint of challenge coins. There are only 343 of each coin. You can’t buy them. But you can get your hands on one… here’s how.

National Firefighters Endowment has opened up membership in The Officers Club. The Officers Club is a limited group who is committed to advancing their legacy to the fire service on a national scale. Their dues allow NFE to continue to make life-saving equipment grants to departments across the U.S. Every piece of equipment we place in service is because of the Officers Club.

Membership is limited to 343 spots per level. Each member is assigned their own numbered, limited edition coin. Additionally, members are included in monthly, “club-only” drawings to win free equipment such as; leather boots, helmets, bailout kits. You do not need to be a company officer or even a firefighter to join. You just need to be committed to the safety of our firefighters and take pride in your role.

For more information on the Officers Club, please visit the website. They look forward to having you in the club.

About FDCam.com - The last day of 2007 was when it all began for us. Right at shift change the alarm went off for a Structure Fire two blocks from the station. A large two story house with heavy fire and plenty of work to do. During overhaul, I noticed something on one of the Truck guys helmet and soon found out he fixed a sport helmet cam to his lid. After watching the video I was hooked! I soon bought one and began shooting every fire I was knocked out on. I searched the web and watched as many fire videos as I could and still to this day I can’t get enough. Helmet cams have evolved over a few short years and there are tons of makes and models to choose from, but what I couldn’t find was an HD cam that can stand up to the abuse of Firefighting and still be relatively affordable. So, we did what Firefighters have long done…We made our own way. We banded together with a top quality HD camera manufacturer to bring you a highly durable, heat and water resistant camera that cost half of what other companies are charging. We use these cameras daily and guarantee them as tough as the job you do! As a matter of fact, we are willing to put our money where our mouth is…If you trash one of our cameras while getting the job done, just send us the camera AND the video footage and we will replace it FREE!* Try finding that deal anywhere else out there.

The other week, I had a Brother contact me about visiting Roanoke. When Brothers visit Roanoke, Willie and I try our best to roll out the red carpet and put our best foot forward. Unfortunately for Willie, he has two left feet! Chief Scott Morrison from  Knotts Island Volunteer Fire Department was in town working and I ensured him we would have a good time. Willie and I both would have taken him around, but Willie was working. Therefore it was my job to show him as much of Roanoke as I could. I think we stopped in or drove by firehouses 1, old 1, 2, 3, old 3, 5, 7, 8, old 9, and 13…not bad for a half day of touring. We broke bread with Captain Wines at 13 and were delighted when Willie Sr. showed up with a friend for lunch as well. It actually gave me a chance to step into some of the houses I don’t get to all that often. I even met two firefighters who I hadn’t met before from the last recruit school.

We got a new guy at #3 A-shift about a month ago. Aaron (prounounced A-run) Parker is from the last recruit school and is fitting in just great. I will be introducing my entire crew this week hopefully. I have been meaning to do it, I just haven’t gotten around to it yet. It will be worth it, trust me!

Other than that, everything is busy as hell. Lacrosse season ends this weekend with a league tournament. I coach my son’s U9 and U11 teams and the U11 will be playing in the tournament. It should be a blast.
