Blogfest 25 – Firehouse Zen and "Tribes"

Igot this link via Firegeezer. However, I am usually a regular reader of Firehouse Zen.

You must read the latest post about his take on why we wear what we wear in public.  How we are sending a message when we wear FD shirts. More importantly what message we are sending. We won’t hold the whole Notre Dame thing against him…jk.

Excerpt below:

When you are wearing your colors, your fire department colors, are you saying something good about your organization?  Are you trying to tell others that you are proud to be associated with that group? Or worse, are you ashamed to be wearing anything identifying you as part of your organization because of what they are and what they stand for?  if so, perhaps you should consider associating yourself with a different team.  I think if you wear the colors, but constantly bad-mouth the organization, then you probably should look really hard at what it is that you think the team is about and ask yourself if you really do want to continue being associated with that group.  Maybe it’s a message to move on.

Blogfest 23 – Scores Feared Dead in Sierra Leone Ferry Accident

Here is another reason why we have codes to follow in the U.S. Overcrowded trains, planes, automobiles, and boats in other Countries cause accidents and make other accidents worse just by the shear volume of occupants.

DAKAR, Senegal — Scores of schoolchildren and their parents on their way to start the new school year were feared drowned after a packed ferry sank off the coast of Sierra Leone, officials said Thursday.

The boat went down in a storm Tuesday night southeast of the capital, Freetown, and it was unclear how many people were on board. A statement by the country’s military spoke of the boat’s “overloaded capacity of over 250 passengers” when it foundered. It said that 40 had been rescued, and that “over 10 corpses have been discovered so far.”

Sierra Leone’s deputy transport minister, Osmond Hanciles, agreed that the wooden boat sank “because of the overloading,” adding that about 40 bodies had been recovered.

Blogfest 21 – Breaking the Law and Getting Caught

I love it when stupid people do stupid things. For instance if you are going to have drugs on you then don’t speed and get pulled over.

In today’s news we have a guy who is transporting 1500 lbs. of marijuana. Here is the problem…he was in a stolen truck. However, that did not get him caught.

For some unknown reason he lost control and rolled his truck. When the police got there they found his stash and once he gets out of the hospital he will face felony charges.

The DPS says the driver – a 25-year-old man from Agua Prieta, Mexico – was injured and flown to a Tucson hospital for treatment.

Authorities say the man will be facing multiple felony charges after he’s released from the hospital.

Blogfest 20 – Governor Schwarzenegger – Dumbbell Finder

This is hilarious. The Governor finds dumbbells. While I have never paid attention and looked for dumbbells. I do know that in house fires for some reason pornographic magazines always make it through. There must be some substance on them that makes them flame retardant. I swear that on a majority of fires I have been on somebody finds some porn mags. Then they always get moved around. You know the homeowners are aware of our find once they get in there! It is inevitable.

Blogfest 19 – Falling Through the Roof

Luckily they didn’t fall far. I don’t think anyone was hurt. You have to be aware of your surroundings! You don’t have to wait long, it happens at 0:03 into the video. Watch as the other firefighter on the roof just looks over into the hole at the two who fell through.

Blogfest 18 – Google Yourself

Alright all of you guys/gals that are soooo into yourselves like myself. To be honest I am pretty modest…probably more of a weakness actually.

Go ahead and take a minute to google yourself. I will google “Fire Critic” and “FireCritic”. Be sure to put your name, your blog name, your nickname, or your alias in quotation marks though. This will trim the fat!

“Fire Critic” gives me 8,720 results

“FireCritic” gives me 11,200 results

Luckily, my blog is the top search result. If it weren’t I would certainly have issues!

Bloggers and webmasters should do this routinely to make sure their content is being crawled by the google spiders!

They should also be doing this to see what others are writing about you, linking to, and whatever else comes up.

Let me know if anything funny comes up when you do a search of your own!

Blogfest 17 – A Look at the Fire Critics Office

As I mentioned before, my office at home is utilized when I am not running around everywhere else. I snapped a photo for my mug shot for Firegeezer earlier here. When I snapped the photo for the Buffalo LODD shirt I decided to snap a few others of my office/Man Room/I Love Me room. I don’t really have too much “I Love Me” stuff but I do have stuff I have collected along the way. Actually, if you really wanted to you could probably piece together where I am from some of the stuff in the room. That is if you don’t know already. Enjoy the photos.

Blogfest 14 – Toll rising for 9/11 Deaths

While many of the bean counters like to disregard the toll that 9/11 took on its rescuers, many of the people who worked hours, days, and months following that day have perished due to illnesses borne of the “stuff” in the air.

These guys/gals gave hundreds of hours to help with the rescue and recovery effort. It is estimated that “About 50,000 firefighters, cops, EMTs, other workers and volunteers joined in the 9/11 rescue and recovery.” (source)

Of that…

NEW YORK — More than 800 World Trade Center rescue and recovery workers have died since 9/11— and cancer has killed at least 270 of those heroes, new data show.

The figures also show that 33 WTC responders committed suicide.

State researchers have tallied 817 deaths of workers and volunteers who toiled at toxic Ground Zero or the Fresh Kills landfill, where rubble was sifted.

“It’s still a huge undercount,” a source told The Post, adding that cases were still being collected.

Read the entire report by the New York Post syndicated on FireRescue1 and view the video below. These guys deserve better!

Blogfest 11 – Two Killed in Texas Fire No One Knew About

Check out this story of a house fire that snuffed all the oxygen and blew out a couple of windows but then smoldered out. The unfortunate thing is that two people were inside at the time of the fire and died. I have heard of this type of thing happening but never run a call like this myself.

To think that at one point the fire was probably at a perfect state for a backdraft.

A Smith County Sheriff’s deputy on a routine welfare check call found the bodies of a man and his wife who apparently died of smoke inhalation from a fire in the couple’s home which no one knew about.

Neighbors and family stand in front of the home of the scene where two bodies were discovered early this morning in eastern Smith County. The deaths are being investigated by the Smith County Fire Marshals office.

Family members of 58-year-old Lester Battee and his 60-year-old wife Nelda said they had tried to reach the couple all day Tuesday and became worried when the couple did not answer the phone.

Blogfest 10 – Video – A Must See View of the Station Fire

This is a firefighters perspective of the Station Fire.

This 6 minute video was given to KPCC’s Steve Julian, courtesy of a Monrovia city firefighter. The video is shot at the entrance to Big Tujunga Canyon. As fire creeps closer to structures, you can hear their concerns of laying out hose lines over fears that electrical wires above crews might collapse.

Blogfest 7 – Captive fire crew escapes inferno but mourns loss

This article is about the inmate firefighters that Fallen Firefighters Hall and Quinones were leading when they perished in the Station Fire.

Heads up to @FireInfoGirl for the link.

LOS ANGELES — As he reached the door of the chow hall, Henry Navarro looked to his right and uttered an expletive. Then he looked to his left and spat out an even stronger one.

Many of the inmate firefighters at Mount Gleason Conservation Camp had been training for years. But nothing could have prepared them for what happened Aug. 30.

The chow hall was supposed to be the “safety zone” for the more than five dozen people at the station. But it and every other building in the ridgetop camp were engulfed. Their supervisors — Capt. Ted Hall and firefighter Spc. Arnie Quinones — were somewhere out there.

The order was given to make a run for the crew carrier buses. Once everyone was in, senior inmate David Clary did a head count.
