Backdraft in Harrison, NJ Caught on Video. Viral Fireground Video Catches Rare Occurrence that Injured 5 Firefighters (3 Videos)

I know I am a little late on this one, but non-the-less it is a great video(s). This video will probably be utilized in training for years to come. The fire occurred at 600 Frank E. Rodgers Blvd. in Harrison. More coverage by STATter911.com here.

Video by T00LS.

WCBS-TV:

Five firefighters were hurt in a terrifying explosion and extra-alarm blaze in Harrison, N.J., Sunday afternoon.

.. when the fire was at its height, a dangerous backdraft was caught on video, CBS 2’s Steve Langford reported. Backdrafts are an explosive phenomenon, and they are one of the worst things that can go wrong in a firefight.

One of those badly hurt when the backdraft erupted was a battalion chief.

“When that glass blew out, he got it all in his face and his body,” said Harrison fire Capt. Robert Gillen. “He was bleeding profusely.”

Owning the Job: Video Ideas To Share With Firefighter Recruits on the First Day of Recruit School

This morning, my department’s training Lieutenant called me. He was looking for the video that he and I watched along with the rest of our recruit school 14 years ago today on our first day with the department. He wasn’t quite sure on the title of it, and unfortunately I can’t remember it at all. So I did what I always do…I asked you guys over on the Fire Critic Facebook Page…and as always, you guys came through for me. No matter the question, I can always rely on the knowledge and experience of the 20k+ friends, fans, Brothers and Sisters on the page to help me out. After all, contrary to popular belief I do not know everything.

Our next recruit school begins on Monday, and the Lt. is looking for that video or another to show the recruits on the first day. I believe the one he is looking for is titled “To Hell and Back” and that is what he thought to, but he couldn’t find it. I believe that is the name of it, but I couldn’t find it online anywhere. I am guessing we have a copy at the training center.

Below are just some of the videos that were recommended by the FB Brothers. I will add that this article was a quick idea I had after all of the great examples shared…and then I sat down and watched all of the videos, one by one. I was holding it together until the Pipes started playing on the Kyle Wilson Tribute video…then I lost it.

Firefighters Michael Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczówka were killed while arriving at a house fire in West Webster, NY yesterday. Firefighters Theodore Scardino and Joseph Hofstetter were also shot in the incident. Off-duty Greece police officer John Ritter, was also injured by shrapnel in the attacks.

Many of the videos related to the incident including audio from the scene is below in this article. I encourage all fire, police, and EMS personnel to take a listen to the chilling yet courageous audio from the scene. Dave Statter said it best when he dubbed it “Extreme Courage Under Fire”.

I will share the arrangements as they are available. Be sure to check out WestWebsterFD.org for official notifications from the department.

Our Fallen:

Michael Chiapperini and Tomacz Kaczówka

Lt. Michael Chiapperini, 43, had been named Firefighter of the Year just two weeks ago, and he led the fire department’s Explorer program for young people interested in becoming firefighters. He had recently taken vacation time to help recovery efforts after Hurricane Sandy, the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reported. He also was the public information officer for the Webster Police Department. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son, who also worked with the fire department.

Tomasz Kaczówka, 19, was a 911 dispatcher for Monroe County. He also was a member of the Explorers group that Chiapperini advised, had worked at a fast-food restaurant and had been a member of the fire department for about a year. One of three brothers, he was studying at Monroe County Community College. On his Facebook page, he said he could speak Polish and German.

In addition to our Brothers who died, three men were injured in the attacks as well including two firefighters and an off-duty police officer.

Firefighters Theodore Scardino and Joseph Hofstetter (l-r)

From FirefighterNation.com:

The two wounded firefighters, Joseph Hofstetter and Theodore Scardino, were in guarded condition in the intensive care unit at Strong Memorial Hospital, authorities said. Both were awake and alert and are expected to recover.

Hofstetter, also a full-timer with the Rochester Fire Department, was hit once in the pelvis, and the bullet lodged in his spine, authorities said. Scardino was hit in the chest and knee.

Off-duty Greece police officer John Ritter, was also injured by shrapnel.

WestWebsterFD.org:

The horrific event s this Christmas Eve has taxed the members of the West Webster Fire Department and entire Monroe County fire service community. It is events like this that bring us closer together as a fire service community dedicated to the preservation of life and property.  As our department begins the healing process we ask for the community’s indulgence and prayers. Your expressions of love, concern and well-being for the family members of our deceased brothers is gratefully acknowledged. As we move forward in the coming days we look to the community for strength and guidance to carry on our mission.

This video is from the Chicago Fire Department and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. It provides insight to some of what Chicago’s firefighters have been through dealing with Line of Duty Deaths (LODD’s), close calls, continuing to learn, and adjusting to change.

Check out FireCritic.com on Facebook

I challenge you to watch this entire video. Then share the video with your Brother and Sister Firefighters.

  • YOU HAVE TO LEARN.
  • You have to train.
  • You have to be ready.
  • Wear your seatbelts.
  • Understand what you are doing and why you are doing it.

Some of the topics include seatbelt usage, situational awareness, health and wellness, calling a MAYDAY, PPE, and much more.

If you think you got some good reason for not wearing this or for not doing things the right way write it down. Because I need to read that to your widow. Cause I’m not going to know what to say. You say it for me. – Chicago Chief of Training Peter VanDorpe

If this video doesn’t make you sit and think about your job and how you do it, you just don’t get it.

Sincere thanks to CFD Commissioner Bob Hoff, the Chicago Fire Department, Chicago IAFF Local 2, and the entire crew at the NFFF especially Rob Maloney, director of this video, for a spectacular job.

Mayday Audio: Firefighter Injured in Springfield, Pennsylvania Two Alarm House Fire

This is the third of three Maydays I know of today.

This fire occurred in Springfield Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania around 6:30pm. A Mayday was transmitted after a firefighter fell through the floor. In the audio, it sounds like another firefighter fell through the floor, the news coverage only mentions one.

Photo from ABCLocal.com

The firefighters were inside looking for a person unaccounted for.

Listen to the audio below

ABCLocal.com:

SPRINGFIELD, Pa. – December 19, 2011 (WPVI) – A firefighter suffered non-life threatening injuries while battling a two-alarm house fire in Springfield, Delaware County.

It happened around 6:30 p.m. Monday along West Woodland Avenue.

Audio and Video: Mayday Called at Claymont, Delaware Townhouse Fire

Claymont Fire Company was assisted by many other departments at a townhouse fire today. The fire went to 3 alarms before destroying the house.

During the fire, a Mayday was declared. Listen to the audio for what the firefighters encountered when they arrived and what actions they took once they got there. Of course, this is just the radio traffic…you never know what was said on scene and not on the radio.

The news report offered nothing on the Mayday, but it is captured in the audio below.

If you have been paying attention, this is the third Mayday of the day (that I know of). I posted the audio of the Mayday’s on The Fire Critic Facebook page where you will also find plenty of other stuff that doesn’t make it to the blog. Be sure to “like” us to keep up on what is going on.

Coverage of the FDNY Mayday from today is here.

DelawareOnline.com:

A three-alarm fire destroyed one townhome and damaged at least five others Monday afternoon in the Brandywine Hundred community of Ballymeade, officials said.

The fire broke out around 2:30 p.m. in the 800 block of W. Boxborough Drive, said Assistant. State Fire Marshal Michael Chionchio.

Close Call Video: Two Lowell Firefighters Rescued at Church Fire After Mayday

Two Lowell, Massachusetts firefighters had to be rescued by other firefighters when they began running out of air in the basement of a church fire. The firefighters outside quickly removed a window grate and removed both firefighters.

The fire occured at the Ste. Marie’s Church, part of Holy Family Parish and firefighters were trying to keep the fire from spreading to the basement.

“They were running low on air and they couldn’t find their way out,” Lemire said.

Firefighters from Engine 6, designated as a rapid-intervention team, rushed into the building, located their colleagues and pulled them out to safety. One engine at all fires is designated as RIT, and has no job at the fire except to be prepared if other firefighters get in trouble.

Lemire said neither firefighter was injured. From the Lowell Sun

The firefighters were treated at the scene. Video is below.
