We’re Not Leaving is a collection of 33 stories/experiences penned by the responders themselves in the first person. The stories are raw and uncut, easily enabling the reader to view the experience from the eyes of the writer. The stories give the reader a first hand account of what they went through that day and the days, weeks, and months following September 11th. From story to story, events are captured from different views and places in and around Ground Zero.

From NYPD Officers to an EMS Director, a building inspector to a Paramedic, Firefighters to iron workers, welders to K9 handlers, a massage therapist to a Priest this book has a broad spectrum of responders. Some of which are used to responding to emergencies and others who felt the need to respond. They all found themselves in something bigger than they could imagine, yet each one of them was able to help.

The individual narratives in this book cover such a myriad of thoughts and feelings. They cover the initial thoughts when they heard or saw what was happening to political issues involved in the recovery, clean-up, and health issues of the responders. Some of these accounts are by people who you might not have considered a “responder” until you read what they were able to accomplish.

We’re Not Leaving is divided into 5 parts

  1. Caught in the Collapse – Accounts from Police, Fire, and EMS Professionals who responded to the terrorist attacks. Their accounts of what they thought, witnessed, felt, and experienced as the World Trade Center Towers collapsed. Many of them talk of survivors guilt.
  2. Looking for Survivors – Hope for finding survivors, looking and searching a midst the Pile, and the beginning of the “controlled chaos” that would become the management of such a large incident. Iron workers, welders, truck drivers, Firefighters, Police Officers, and so many others came together searching and hoping for survivors.
  3. Recovery, Recovery, Recovery – A look into how working at Ground Zero and other areas involved in the recovery effort effected those working there. For days, weeks, even months, people worked at the Pile and staging areas for what was removed from Ground Zero. They would continually see horrific sites, yet it became somehow became routine for some responders.
  4. The Responders Need Help – Many other people became responders too. They came from all over the Country to help. Part 4 offers accounts of these “responders” from their point of view and those of the people they were helping, the ones working the Pile.
  5. Renewal – A look into what has happened in the 10 years since 9/11. Advocates fight for responders health benefits, and others talk about issues facing responders since 9/11…some of which should have been taken care of up front.
The book is completed with an epilogue by the Widow of an NYPD Officer who died in 2007 of cancer from working at Ground Zero.

I found myself immersed in this book and hardly put it down until I finished it. I relived many paths taken that day through the narratives in this book. I have read numerous books on 9/11, each of them a little different than the others. This book has been one of the best. Raw accounts from people who might not have been able to share their story otherwise.

I recently finished reading We’re Not Leaving just prior to heading to New York City for the first time in 15-20 years. I had not been to Ground Zero since the terrorist attacks. This book helped me remember some of the landmarks, but more importantly I was able to realize where some of these stories occurred that I had just read a week prior. Wow, what a tribute to those who worked at Ground Zero, the lives lost that fateful day, and those who have perished since due to working the Pile.

My favorite excerpt:

“Would I do it again? I’d do it tomorrow. I may not be healthy enough, but it’s what I’m made of. When I spoke before Congress and Senate, and I’ve done it many times, I always ask them: What’s the one thing that almost every responder had in common? And they still to this day can’t answer the question.” source – page 102 by John a Union Ironworker.

10 Years in the Making. Visiting Ground Zero for the First Time

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to travel to New York City. I have not been to NYC in somewhere around 15-20 years. My last trip was with my family and we stopped by the World Trade Center and went to the top. I remember St. Paul’s Church and the World Trade Center very well. The only other thing I remember about the trip was how pissed off my grandfather was that there was a gay and lesbian parade marching down the street. Man was he pissed.

This time, I was also traveling with family…my brothers Willie Wines Jr. and Zach Green. More on the entire trip later. I want to share something else here.

So there I was in NYC, we took the subway down to Manhattan and our destination was Ground Zero. The site was something I had only seen on tv, in books, and magazines. My recollection of the World Trade Center site was from years ago and I still realize that I cannot fathom what it looked like after the terrorist attacks. So many say that you would never understand it unless you saw it and I believe them.

Ten years later and I finally get my chance to visit the site where 343 of my brothers were murdered along with so many civilians. To say that I have been awaiting this day is a huge understatement. I have read books, stories, and watched videos about the events. I was working the day it happened. I remember it like it was yesterday…and I have climbed in memory of these Brothers.

We were on the subway on our way to Ground Zero and I had no clue where we were getting off. We got off the subway and emerged to ground level right in the shadow of the Freedom Tower, my first site was St. Paul’s Chapel. When I saw that I knew exactly where I was.

What happened next is hard to explain. I am not an emotional guy, but the feeling I got was not like anything I had experienced before.

I couldn’t breathe. I was not suffocating, but I could not exhale. It was like the feeling when you jump into cold water. I felt like I inhaled for minutes.

I couldn’t cry. I teared up but didn’t cry, I felt like I was involuntarily holding back a river of tears. A good cry would work wonders for me. I have not cried in years…not because I hold it back, but because I simply cannot. I do tear up…typically at funerals.

I felt the wind around me. It was a cool wind on a beautiful night in Manhattan. The wind was swirling and I toned everything else out.

People were walking around me, they were used to the site, they lived there. This was not their first moment being there. They had more than likely lived it for the past 10 years…

I was living everything I had read, felt, saw, or understood in that moment and I had no time to prepare.

I held on to the railing at St. Paul’s and said a little prayer. I wasn’t there to make a difference. I was there to complete my understanding of an event that has changed my life and I was not alone.

Willie put it best:

“Rhett and I made eye contact and without saying knew… “THIS” has been our destination for the past 10 years.”

Teen Charged in Fake 911 Call that led to Fire Truck Crash. His Fault or not?

A teenager in Connecticut was charged with making a false 911 call. The problem isn’t just the prank call. The problem is that a fire truck crashed on the way to the call.

Read the whole story with video here on FireRescue1.com

What do you think? I agree that it is wrong to make fake 911 calls, but do you think it is his fault for the fire truck crashing?

Should the punishment be more severe?

LODD – FDNY September 11th Hero Roy Chelsen Has Passed Away

Firefighter Close Calls has the story on Roy Chelsen. He is a September 11th hero who risked his life to make it back to the North Tower amid bodies falling from the upper floors to warn other firefighters of the towers imminent collapse.

Roy is the 3rd LODD of 2011.

Roy Chelsen

Roy died of bone-marrow cancer that has been linked to his weeks of work at ground zero after September 11th.

Roy was 51 years and is survived by his wife Trish and son Christopher, 24.

He was stationed at Engine 28 in East Village and died peacefully at his home in upstate New York on Sunday.

More information on Roy Chelsen:

Sidenote:

One of the most famous photos of FDNY firefighters operating during the Terrorist attacks is of Mike Kehoe, also of Engine 28. He worked along side of Roy. His picture is below. More information on Mike and the famous photo here.

Fire Critic Note:

I made a pact with myself that I would cover every single Line of Duty Death this year. Here it is the 10th of January and we have had 3 already. The thing about LODD’s is that they aren’t that easy to cover….physically and emotionally. I learn about each firefighter and I have the potential of interviewing the survivors at the NFFF Memorial Service in Emmittsburg, MD later in the year with Firefighter Netcast. That is the emotional side of things. Physically, it is hard to get this information out quickly and be correct everytime. I am sure I will screw something up. I have posted before the USFA has deemed deaths to be LODD’s. That is just part of the protocol for USFA. The LODD’s have to be identified and paperwork filed by the department. Therefore, what I deem an LODD may not be in the end. To each his own. I might cover some of the IAFF and non-USFA LODD’s as well. We will see how my coverage ends up.

Obama signs 9/11 health bill aka James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act into Law

CNN.com:

Washington (CNN) — President Barack Obama signed the 9/11 health bill into law in Hawaii on Sunday, White House spokesman Bill Burton said.

Obama signed the bill during his Hawaiian vacation, with no signing ceremony held. In a statement issued later, the president said he was “honored” to sign the bill, which pays for health care for responders believed to have been sickened by pollution at the ruins of the World Trade Center in New York.

“We will never forget the selfless courage demonstrated by the firefighters, police officers, and first responders who risked their lives to save others,” Obama said. “I believe this is a critical step for those who continue to bear the physical scars of those attacks.”

The bill made a long journey in order to get signed. A printed copy of the bill flew with a White House staffer from Washington to the Hawaiian island of Oahu, so Obama could sign it from his vacation rental in Kailua.

Update: James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act Passes Senate

Today, the Senate passed the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act passed through Senate. The measure had previously passed through the House.

There is speculation on why it passed through the Senate after having been shot down just days ago. Some people think it might have something to do with The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart’s hilarious political jabs at the Republicans who filibustered the bill.

It really makes you wonder what the catalyst was. After all, the bill was rewritten removing over $2 billion in cost. Republicans have caught a bad rap on the whole deal…maybe they realized how damaging the bad press could get.

Then again, maybe the nay sayers just did the right thing…we may never know.

Photo from CNN.com. In the years since 9/11, respiratory and mental health issues have been a concern for firefighters and other first responders.

CNN.com:

Washington (CNN) — The Senate on Wednesday passed a compromise version of a bill to provide free medical treatment and compensation to first responders of the September 11 terrorist attack.

The bill passed on a voice vote on what is expected to be the final day of the lame-duck session of Congress. It now goes to the House, which also is expected to approve it and send it to President Barack Obama to be signed into law.

Jubilant Democrats hailed the last-minute approval as a triumph for firefighters, police officers and other emergency personnel who put themselves in harm’s way to help others in the 2001 terrorist attack.

Republicans Kill the 9/11 Health Bill – Lame-as-F@#k Congress

I have kinda been sitting on this one a while, the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act was voted down in Senate. Today, a friend sent me the link to the video below and I had to run it!

Who better to explain what happened and expose the GOP leaders who continue to utilize 9/11 to seem compassionate all the while not giving a damn about the first responders who worked at Ground Zero than Jon Stewart on the Daily Show. Even if this is Political humor, the humor is typically not to far from the truth.

The House bill passed at 268 to 160 (17 Republicans voting for the bill and 157 against). Only 3 Democrats voted against the House Bill.

The Senate bill failed. The vote was 57-42, short of the 60 votes in favor needed to proceed under Senate rules.

Getty Images. (source) Construction workers at the World Trade Center site in October. A bill to provide health care to workers sickened by toxic debris during the recovery effort at Ground Zero failed a test vote in the Senate on Thursday.

All I can say is that this is ammunition for when the debate comes up next time at the firehouse. You know, when all those guys sit there and talk about Abortion and Gun Rights…claiming that the Democrats are going to take away their guns.

That being said, I am not a staunch Democrat. I vote for the candidate. My livelihood comes from my job. Therefore, issues like abortion and gun rights take a back seat to those which directly affect my job. Certainly, the Democrats are not perfect…but it is despicable for these Republicans to think that they can stand behind the flag of OUR FALLEN BROTHERS and then vote down a bill which provides for our first responders at Ground Zero.

Watch the video below….til the end!

The Bill:

Known as the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, the bill bears the name of a New York City detective who participated in the rescue and recovery efforts at ground zero for about three weeks after the Sept. 11 attack.

Remembering September 11th

Every year I have aspirations of writing a post that will truly embody what firefighters think of September 11th.

Every year the date shows up quicker and quicker and I fail. This year is no different.

I remember where I was when it all unfolded. I was at the station working. We happened to have CNN or FoxNews on when they went live with the reports. As the reports unfolded, we watched and listened. The errant reporting of many events that were thought to have happened or were happening that luckily did not along with the history which was made of the senseless killing of so many people, police officers, and 343 firefighters at Ground Zero, the Pentagon, and Shanksville, PA.

I stood watching as the second plane hit the South Tower. The crew at my station was speechless.

Then the towers fell…I remember saying something about imagining how many firefighters had just perished.

9 years later

It is now 9 years later. Some of the firefighters in my department were in Middle or High School when the attacks occurred. It is hard to imagine their thoughts on the day. Does 343 mean the same to them as it does to me. It could be the difference between my thoughts and that of an actual FDNY firefighter who lived through the day.

So many thoughts and so many memories.

Do we still remember? Will we NEVER FORGET. How can some NEVER FORGET if they don’t remember it in the first place?

Are we creating a legacy of REMEMBERING for those in the future who were not even alive for the events?

Here I sit at the fire station on September 11th (trading time with a brother firefighter). We remember, it is hard to forget! What have we done to continue the legacy for those who died on September 11th? Nothing…

Luckily for me there are so many memorial and tribute events, organizations, web sites, and venues to preserve the legacy of our Bravest 343.

What about you?

What are you doing to NEVER FORGET?

Where were you on that day?

What were you doing?

Blogfest 14 – Toll rising for 9/11 Deaths

While many of the bean counters like to disregard the toll that 9/11 took on its rescuers, many of the people who worked hours, days, and months following that day have perished due to illnesses borne of the “stuff” in the air.

These guys/gals gave hundreds of hours to help with the rescue and recovery effort. It is estimated that “About 50,000 firefighters, cops, EMTs, other workers and volunteers joined in the 9/11 rescue and recovery.” (source)

Of that…

NEW YORK — More than 800 World Trade Center rescue and recovery workers have died since 9/11— and cancer has killed at least 270 of those heroes, new data show.

The figures also show that 33 WTC responders committed suicide.

State researchers have tallied 817 deaths of workers and volunteers who toiled at toxic Ground Zero or the Fresh Kills landfill, where rubble was sifted.

“It’s still a huge undercount,” a source told The Post, adding that cases were still being collected.

Read the entire report by the New York Post syndicated on FireRescue1 and view the video below. These guys deserve better!

Fire Chiefs and Statistics

Some Fire Chiefs have devised a great way of showing success in their careers and within their departments. By altering the reporting criteria for call data they can manipulate the data. That data compared to former data (history) will show change. The problem is that by changing the criteria we aren’t comparing apples to apples anymore.

For example…

The prodigal department would more than likely show an increase in fires up until the post “America is Burning” era of the 70′s and 80′s. This steady increase was due to the increase in population and growth of cities and counties (more people and more houses = more chance of fires). The culmination of the report “America is Burning” was basically that this is going to increase until departments create fire prevention education. Through fire prevention education, firefighters have been able to save thousands of lives over the past 30 years by preventing fires.

Once we hit the bottom on preventing fires the decrease in fires leveled off. This created a problem for Fire Chiefs. All of that hard work that started 30 years ago with the beginning of fire prevention had paid off and had reached its limits on decreasing fires. I don’t mean that we should stop doing it, it has just done all it can do and as long as we continue on with fire prevention we will continue to stay where we are. That is a good thing.

I know that some of you are probably saying that we can do more in preventing fires and I agree. However, it is outside of the realm of the fire prevention education we all know. Think earlier detection, non combustible products and building construction, among others.

So here we are with Fire Chiefs trying to show how good they are and how good their department and fire prevention programs are and the fires aren’t decreasing. What is a Fire Chief to do? The answer that many of them found is to increase the loss criteria for structure fires. Whereas for the past 100 years the typical kitchen fire that burns the stove and cabinets above was a “structure fire” when reporting total fires is not included in those statistics anymore. If you raise the loss to say above $5000 or $20,000 to deam it a structure fire we have in fact removed many fires from the data. This in turn shows a decrease in fires. This type of thing is not done overnight. A Fire Chief might make the criteria go up a couple thousand dollars each year before meeting the goal amount.

These statistics are a problem within the fire service. This is a false sense of protection. These statistics have been used all across the globe to decrease staffing, apparatus, and stations.

The altering of criteria runs a lot deeper than the example I gave above. We see it in all facets of our jobs. Anywhere we can make things look different than they are to benefit the people holding the data it can be seen.

Response times is another big example of using statistics to show what “they” want it to show. Fire Chiefs and other administrators have found that by recording the on scene time for EMS calls works out a lot better than utilizing the much more exact “patient contact” time. Who are we kidding. On EMS calls we mark on scene when pulling up to the address, however how long does it take to get the gear and stretcher and take the elevator to the 21st floor to the patient. In reality, we should be utilizing both times. However, if we are only using one then the “patient contact” time should actually be the “on scene” time.

What do you all think?
