The best part of this competition is learning about new blogs. There are many new blogs since last year. I had heard of most of them, but some of them were brand new to me. Take a minute to check out all of the nominated blogs below!

Controlling The Fire Service Media…Bloggers Keep The News Flowing!

Firehouse.com, FireEngineering.com, FireRescue1.com, FirefighterNation.com, and many other web sites are great places to get your news and opinion. Some of them have magazines in print which have been around much longer. Print magazines are great for news and information, but cannot compete with the more instant ability to publish online.

Fire and/or EMS service blogs can be another form of online news site. Maybe not all blogs publish news all the time, but most do from time to time.

Probably the epitome of fire service news blogs are STATTer911.com or FireGeezer.com, although any other blogs cover news events from around the world.

The news doesn’t have to be breaking news either. Many bloggers are great writers and offer free original content on their sites. Take Chris Naum’s CompanyOfficer.com and CommandSafety.com, Mick Mayer’s FirehouseZen.com, or Art Goodrich’s ChiefReason.com. They all offer top notch writing and insight.

Naturally, the larger media companies created blogs. Firehouse.com and FireEngineering.com offer blogs from some of their contributing editors. FireRescue1 and FirefighterNation took a little bit different route.

FireRescue1.com came up with the Kitchen Table; a conglomerate of bloggers which for the most part offers syndicated material from the authors own blog hosted elsewhere.

FirefighterNation.com is a hybrid site. Part message board, part news site, part blog network, part social network site. They offer blogs for any member who wants to publish in the format. In addition, FireEMSBlogs.com was loosely created out of the site.

What I have found most interesting is how many bloggers will break news stories, write articles, or other information that soon after you will see in the mainstream fire service media.

Sure, it is given that if a news story breaks that the mainstream fire service media is going to cover it. However, what is ironic is the other stuff. Articles written on various topics are obviously read and then soon after you will see another article on the topic in one of the larger media outlets.

I have about 5 examples from the last month…including stuff heard over podcasting later to be revealed in an article elsewhere.

It just goes to show that bloggers matter and are doing a great job! Keep up the great work…

He’s Back….Your Favorite Blogging Captain

If you follow the Fire Critic then there is a pretty good chance that you have heard of the Engine 9 Blog. This blog was a finalist for the Blog of the Year 2009. Unfortunately, soon after the contest was over one of the main contributors to that blog was moved. A and C shifts were the main contributors, the Lt. on A and the Captain on C. Engine 9′s Blog is still moving along.

I have great news for you though. Captain Willie Wines Jr., the more colorful writer on the Engine 9 Blog,  has gone out on his own. Since being moved to a different station he has finally started a blog. Many of his fans and readers hounded him to move out on his own. I am happy to say that you can now join in on some of the great writing you were used to before over at IronFiremen.com. Check it out. He is only 2 posts deep, but look for plenty more in the future!

One Last Word on Trauma

The Blue Ridge Medic has been able to say what I apparently had a  hard time saying…although it was written on Oct. 12th it is worth a read. For those of you who don’t know about the BRM it is a well written blog!

It kinda puts it all in perspective and follows along with what I wrote about it and still stick to. Oh yeah….and the BRM is just down the street from me (literally just a couple miles down 460!)

I will highlight some of it:

Now, what about other TV shows out there that are emergency or medical based like Rescue Me, ER and House? Does anyone think that everything that happened on ER was true to life? I saw false intubations, doctors defib asystole and many other things. Yet, that show went on forever and was critically acclaimed.

Monday Morning Shoutout – The EMT Spot

This weeks Monday Morning Shoutout goes to The EMT Spot. This is a must read for EMT’s. Being that most Firefighters are EMT’s he has you covered too. The EMT Spot is a hybrid website/blog that appears as if it a blog, but its offerings are more of a website. He has a certain posting schedule and appears to stick to it.

The insight offered by first hand experience is great. Steve Whitehead is the man behind the site. He is a Firefighter/Paramedic for the South Metro Fire Rescue Authority (Colorado).

The mission of his site is:

Welcome to The EMT Spot! I created this website for you. Whether you are an EMT basic, an intermediate or a paramedic, I made this site with the purpose of delivering information valuable to the professional Emergency Medical Technician.

If you are an EMT or on the road to becoming an EMT, first allow me to offer my congratulations. At some point you were faced with the same question that all of us have faced. Do something safe, something predictable, something socially appealing or go your own way and choose the life outside the convenient norms. You, like me, choose this second path, a life less ordinary. You chose to swallow Morpheus’s red pill and follow Alice down the wormhole. I commend you.

Considerations for Top Ten Fire, EMS, and Blog Categories

Usually, a top ten list only takes a couple hours to a couple day s to complete depending on the category.

Below are websites and blogs in their respective categories. If you have one that you think should be on the list but is not please let me know.

Some websites are not included because of their demographic. For instance, State Fire News sites are not included, some websites use a “blog” format but are more like websites and have been included there. Some blogs are that great that they are in a couple of categories.

I have plans in the future to do top ten lists for State Fire and/or EMS websites, Local blogs, training sites and blogs,  and local fire department sites. Feel free to get your link in for consideration today.

If you run a website, blog, or whatever and think you should be on this list or would like to be in consideration please let us know via email (firecritic@firecritic.com), comment, or contact us link at the top.

The following are in no particular order:

Fire website – Top ten all around Fire websites

Firefighter Blogs

EMS Websites

Monday Morning Shoutout – Engine 9 RFD Blog

This installment of the Monday Morning Shoutout goes to Roanoke Fire-EMS Department Engine Company 9 (Engine 9 RFD Blog). The crew there runs an Engine and an Ambulance. The shifts blog about their days and include plenty of hijinx. The blog is several months old and it seems they are holding true to updating it regularly.

Check out the links they have as well. There are other stations within the City that have started their own blogs, however they are not updated as regularly.

Check out the blog here. The photo below is of one of the shifts out checking hydrants. Gotta love the pretty vests…Safety First!

Kudos to Firefighter Jerry Franks who hit us up back when we posted about looking for assistance in marketing The Fire Critic! Thanks for the link guys!

Monday Morning Shoutout – Your Happy Medic

Our Monday morning shoutout goes to Your Happy Medic this morning! The Happy Medic is a FF/PM and offers a wide variety of posts on fire and EMS so don’t let the name fool you. Plus, he is one of those guys (although I don’t know his name I am pretty sure he is a guy) who is a Paramedic on the Engine Company. Pretty sweet if you ask me…and so are those wooden ladders!

FWnetz – Fire on the Net

FWnetz translated to English

FWnetz translated to English

I found a website today that I am certain I have seen before. I know some of the names associated from one of the other sites I run and I think I have actually written on one of the sites from Europe before. The website is FWnetz – Fire on the Net. The site is either German or Dutch forgive me for not knowing exactly. The website can be found here, however before you go there you should know that it is not in English. I happened across the site because they linked to Firegeezer’s post on the video from France. If you want to visit the translated pages click here. The link should work.

It is interesting that they also covered the deadly fire in England here. I posted a story about it here.

For websites such as these, I have added a little link in the bookmark bar on my browser (I use Firefox exclusively unless to check for compatibility with a site I am creating). The link is from googles translation browser buttons found here.

Maybe in the future, I can get the guys over at FWnetz to add the plugin (here is the link for those wordpress webmasters who are interested) like I have to the right hand side which enables readers to translate the website with the click of a button. After all, they boast some serious numbers of readers (you can view that here)! If you are joining us and do not understand English or would like to read this in your native tongue please click on the flag of your country (top right of the sidebar) and it will automatically translate the page into your language. Of course if you cannot read this then you don’t understand that I am trying to help and it is a lost cause….ha.

FWnetz appears to be a very worthwhile website. I look forward to following them and have added a link on the sidebar.

Top Ten Marketing Tools for Fire/EMS Blogs and Websites

Today, I would like to delve into the top ten tools that webmasters and bloggers can do to market their blog or website. For obvious reasons, websites and blogs want readers. This Top Ten list assumes that you are writing stuff that your audience wants to read, if not try working on that first then revisit my list. Trust me, there are so many more things you can do, some simple and others more difficult to better market your site but these are my top ten. Feel free to leave a comment if you have a question or email me.

Fire Critic side note: this list was created for fire and EMS blogs, however it can be used by just about any webmaster or blogger.

10. A sig (Signature file). A sig file is added to the end of EVERY email you send. Don’t be shy, but be concise. Add your website name, url, and maybe even the banner, but not much more. I have seen signatures that trail on into infinity. I don’t want to see the abbreviation of every credential, certificate, and degree you have in your signature…Nobody cares. If you are important, let other people make that determination on their own. Various email clients offer different ways of adding this. I have yet to do it for my email I use for this site, but do as I say not as I do.

9. Name drop. Whenever possible, talk about other bloggers, blogs, websites, authors and be sure to hyperlink to their site or article you are referring to. You would be surprised at how many people search for certain peoples names. You can get traffic from people searching for those people and your site coming up on the search pages! Trust me. You would not believe how many people come to my site because I spoke about guys like Ray McCormack, Dave Iannone, and Bobby Halton (see I just did it again!). Of course adding in a name like Megan Fox, Pamela Anderson, or Michael Jackson doesn’t hurt either!

8. Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Make every attempt to get every hit you can out of everything you write. This includes the internal code. For example, go to the top line of the browser at firehouse.com (name drop) and look at all the shit they have on there. I guarantee that if you search for any of those terms, they will be in the top of searches. There is a lot more to SEO, but we will start out small.

7. Post on Forums. You can get a lot of traffic by posting on forums. Utilize a name that is very close if not the same to your website/blog. Be sure to offer your link in your profile AND your signature on the forums so people can click right over to your site. However, do not be an ass on the forums…keep that for the lonely guys who post like idiots on The Watchdesk (name drop).

6. Reciprocal Links. Offer and ask for reciprocal links. Whenever someone links to you, link back to them. Whenever you ask for someone to link to your site be sure you have already linked to them. Don’t be a link whore though. If someone wants you to link to their carpetmunching website don’t unless you are running another carpetmunching website.

5. Comment on other blogs. One huge benefit of running a blog is offering the ability for readers to comment. Those comment will create CON-VER-SA-TION and keep readers coming back to read and re-comment. When you read another blog, leave a comment! Trust me, this works. Readers see it and blog authors see it and will visit your site. ALWAYS give your name or PSEUDONYM (like Fire Critic) and a link to your url when prompted. Be sure to offer the ability for readers to be notified when someone leaves a comment after them (I recently added this ability to the Fire Critic Blog).

4. Network. Network using sites like Facebook, Twitter, Firefighter Nation, Jems Connect, LinkedIn, and even Myspace if you are still a teenager. Use these sites to their utmost. With the advent of Mafia Wars and other games like that people are spending more and more time on these sites. Be sure to include your RSS feed so that people can get to your content from these sites! Twitter has become a great tool in networking too! You can even use your twitter account to update your facebook updates now.

3. RSS Feed. You must have an RSS Feed available if you are blogging. More importantly, offer the ability for readers to receive your feed via email. Try Google Feedburner.

2. Create an Image. Create an image for your site. Be sure to have your site name and/or url in the image. The image should easily identify your site much like the scary (boo) skull and fire shroud I picked! Either create one, buy one, or have someone make you one. Be sure to make a banner for your site as well and offer it in various sizes. One more better step is offer the code so that other sites can post your banner without hosting the image themselves. You can view the Fire Critic’s logo and banners here.

1. Get your own domain. Do not settle for a domain that ends in .wordpress.com or .blogspot.com people will never remember your url and might give up thinking about it. Instead of having that trailing url, spend the $10 a year and get your own. You can create a forward to the .blogspot.com url easily. Ultimately, you should get your own domain url AND hosting. This opens so many more options to you as a blogger/webmaster.

Making the most of blogging

How’s about another Shrimp on the Barbie?

In a couple of months, two bloggers will be working together at each others jobs. One is a Firefighter and Paramedic on an Engine company  in San Fransisco (The Happy Medic) and the other is a Paramedic for the North East Ambulance Service (Medic999). You might ask Northeast what? Well I assure you it is not Northeast San Fransisco. It is actually in England somewhere…I am guessing in the Northeast but I wasn’t able to pinpoint the location.

After almost a year of hounding each other with questions, they have come up with this ingenious idea that brings blogging to a new level. I have been blogging a while with other sites but never talked anyone into doing a tv show about me.

Exactly how far away are these two bloggers? Something like 5400 miles…so far that google maps cannot give you driving or walking directions.

These two bloggers have somehow curtailed the BBC into doing a television show on their journey. Medic999 will travel with BBC crews to San Fran and ride with The Happy Medic, then once Medic999 gets sick of riding the medic truck like all of the other Medics in our Country he will take The Happy Medic back to England to ride the ambulance there. Medic999 is apparently interested in how The Happy Medic can multitask on the Engine as a Firefighter and Paramedic as well.

Apparently The Happy Medic doesn’t know how good he has it being a FF/PM on the engine (“fire lorry” for those across the pond) that he really wants to see what socialized health care looks like it prior to President Obama making it reality here in the States.

Ok, so I added a little sarcasm in there for effect.

I am actually looking forward to watching this on the television (for you guys across the pond that is tele). There is even a chance of a continued series if the first one is a hit.

Read about the “project” on The Happy Medic here and Medic999 here.

Now if I can just figure out how to translate this into english for my friends across the pond…
