Best of the Rest – Links, Dragon Fire Gloves, FSW, and much more!

The days keep getting busier. My daughters competitive cheerleading is in full swing and my son begins basketball tonight. If you follow the Fire Critic on Facebook, I mentioned I got in an accident in the engine yesterday. Everyone is fine. There was minor damage to the engine and the car. The engine did not go out of service, although we missed the call were responding to when it happened.

I am gearing up for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I have vacation for Thanksgiving and I think we are spending it with my wife’s family in Richmond. I will be in Richmond that weekend and might have some time to get out. If anyone wants to catch up let me know.

In the spirit of Christmas, I put together the yearly Top Ten Christmas Gifts for Firefighters List. Check it out here!

Also in the spirit of Christmas, I am looking for companies who would like to take advantage of a cheap and easy marketing program…more on that here!

Do you want your link on the FireCritic.com homepage? Simply add my link to your site and email me your link. I will include it in the FireCritic.com blogroll!

If you are a firefighting blogger, please contact me at firecritic@firecritic.com. I have a unique facebook group designed just for us to pass around information and learn from each other. Currently there are 35 bloggers included and I don’t want to leave anyone out!

I got my FSW Workbook and Colorado 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb shirt! Thanks Brother!

Product Review of the Week – Dragon Fire Alpha X Structural Firefighting Glove

The Dragon Fire Alpha X Structural Firefighting glove was reviewed by Captain Willie Wines Jr. including comments by myself. As we found out after the review, the glove has a huge following and is used widely in the fire service. We now know why.

The Dragon Fire glove is thinner than most traditional firefighting gloves yet still offers a level of protection that exceeds NFPA standards. The fingers had a good fit and were not bulky. This allowed for good dexterity and “feel”. - Captain Wines

FDIC Wrapup Part III – The People We Met

Wrapup part I is here, Part II is here, and Willie wrote a bit on FDIC here

Willie and I stuck out like sore thumbs…We rocked Alt Kilt custom kilts, our helmets with custom Box Alarm Leather helmet fronts, and MN8 shirts. It was a marketing idea we thought up and it worked!

Many knew who we were, the others were trying to figure us out. Willie and I were overwhelmed (to put it mildly) at the FOOLS Bash by how many of you guys found us (wasn’t that hard was it). That made it very easy to meet so many people and put faces with the names!

First of all an apology…

Kris Mola of the Remembrance Rescue Project

We met so many people, many who we knew from the blogs or Facebook, or Twitter but had never met. We apologize we didn’t have more time to catch up. We hope you guys understand that there was just so much going on at the show and the events we attended that it was not our intention to leave any of you hanging.

Be sure to check out the photos below. Also check out Facebook for more and tag yourself if you are in them.

Fire Critic Facebook Page

Second of all, thanks to Zach Green of MN8 FoxFire for having us in their booth. It is always a pleasure! We had a blast hanging out with your entire crew!

Contact us if you would like us in your booth at other events! We can bring a crowd and create a buzz!

Some of the people we met or ran into again are included in the photos below. I apologize if I left you out or forgot your name. Others include: Average Jake Firefighters Robbie Owens, Danny Owens, and Ed Owens, Jeff Harkey of Daily911Deals.com, John Shafer, Michael Smith, Jason Jefferies, Jonah Smith, April Saling, Russell Stine, Tony Mack of The Bowring, Nick Langerock and Gary Lembcke at Spartan ERV, Chris Wilson  of the Firefighter Cancer Support Network, The crew of Black Helmet, Bill Carey, Stefan Svensson, The crew at Fire Rescue Magazine, Mike Ward, Greg Guise, Mike Brooks, Clayton Kovats, Chad Watson of TRA-FX, Sterling Wright, Doug Pierson, The guys of DetroitFireFilm.org, Jay Martinez of the Spartan Shield light,  Mickey Milam of HelpTheGoodGuys.com, Chris Huston of Everyone Goes Home, Matthew Smith of Kovenex Fabrics, Rory Blanchard and the rest of the crew at Remembrance Rescue Project, Chris Moren of “The Pig”, Timothy McCloskey and Joe Brown of Firehouse Pride, Tim Landingham of PacMule, The crew of Glove Crafters  and many more!

Finding Inspiration to be a Healthy Firefighter

Firefighters need to be healthy. I am no health nut, nor will you be seeing me in a firefighter calendar anytime soon.

However, I have been trying to be a healthier firefighter. I am not talking about wearing SCBA…I have always done that. I am talking about strength training, eating healthy, and being fit.

I am talking about being fit and eating healthy. As I type this, my whole body is sore from a chest workout on Monday alone at the firehouse, a tremendous leg workout on Tuesday with my wife, and some vigorous training this morning in Troutville on Rapid Intervention Teams…needless to say, I took the day off from working out.

Please do not take this post as being a “lecture” about what you should be doing. I just want to share some of my inspiration for finally making a difference for myself. I am not a nutritionist, nor am I a personal trainer. In all, I have lost 15 lbs. in the past 6 months. That may not sound like much, but I only weight 155 lbs. now. I am not a big guy. I did have some excess weight and still have some “baby fat” to loose!

13 years in my department. I was 155 lbs. when I got hired. The only difference between then and now is that I had well defined abs then. Now, they are still covered by a layer (not a beer gut) of fat. I am working on that! 13 years of eating whatever the hell I wanted and I was blessed with only gaining 15 lbs. I can’t complain.

Feel free to let me know what works for you.

This is where I draw some of my inspiration:

My wife with IFBB Pro Nicole Wilkins. This is one of the women my wife draws her inspiration from.

My Wife Becky

My wife is an amazing woman. Over a year ago, she decided she was going to begin working out. She got a personal trainer and started a regimen of working out twice a week with a personal trainer. Soon after, she realized that her goal would be to compete in a local figure competition. This summer she will achieve that goal. After a year and a half of training, strict dieting, and pushing her body to the limits, she will compete. I am so proud and excited for her. I began working out with her and her trainer several months ago. Two days a week, I wear myself out in the gym right next to my wife. Above the fact that we are working out, we get to spend time together away from the children and get to have fun, cut up, and workout. It has been beneficial to us as a couple as well as individually for our bodies. My wife works out other days of the week on her own. I join here when I can.

Even after working out with her and the trainer, I still lacked motivation to work out at the station…until last week. I have finally turned the corner and seen some results of working out and want more. I don’t have any set goals for what I want to accomplish with working out, but putting on some muscle is good enough for me. Don’t worry…I am not splitting shirts yet!

Me and my wife finishing our first ever 5k together.

Friends who run

For years, I have seen friends on facebook, twitter, and blogs who run. Greg Friese and Chris Hebert are two that come to mind immediately. They run. Greg probably runs more than I ever will. I still have not found that Runner’s high, and I don’t run regularly. What I have found that drives me is running 5k races. I have done several now and enjoy my time pushing myself each time. The messed up thing is that I don’t really train for the races. We will see where this goes. I will also note that my wife ran in the San Francisco Women’s Marathon a couple of years ago…another accomplishment of hers that she set her mind to. Unfortunately, she incurred and injury during the marathon and was only able to compete the 1/2 marathon.

Eating Healthy

I am the firehouse cook at my firehouse. I enjoy cooking and am able to control what is served at lunch and dinner. I might add that I am a pretty

My wife and I in the kitchen. Notice the apron...I know my place.

decent cook, know how to do it on a budget and the guys seem to like my cooking. Over the years, I have worked in firehouses where I cook on a rotation or might not cook at all. I have learned all kinds of recipes. While I am not a health nut that researches healthy recipes…yet. I do follow some basic rules with firehouse cooking. They took a little while to catch on for some of the guys who REALLY enjoy “comfort” food, but I do what I can. The only thing I can’t control is portion size. While I may be cooking healthier food, these guys might get three plates of it. That might be a little counter-intuitive, but at least the piles of food they put in their mouth is better for them. They just quite follow the simple caloric input/output ideology.

Here are some of my cooking rules:

  • No dinner rolls…except for Thanksgiving
  • Wheat wraps when possible instead of breads
  • Olive oil if I have to use it (hurts the budget)
  • I rarely fry anything
  • Fresh veggies…almost always
  • Canned foods only when necessary
  • Desserts are rare
  • Spenda instead of sugars…this also helps with one of my guys who is diabetic

My wife is helping me with the dieting aspect of healthy eating…I am working on eating every 3 hours. Two protein shakes and snacks of fresh fruit accompany my three meals a day. My breakfast is typically 4 eggs (or egg whites when possible).

Again, I am still learning.

Chris Brennan of the Fire Service Warrior

The Fire Service Warrior

If you pay attention to Chris Brennan and Brian Brush of The Fire Service Warrior, they talk a lot about fitness. Chris especially speaks of his crossfit workouts. Between the blog, Facebook, and Twitter @ChrisFSW (be sure to follow the hashtag #FSWTraining) Chris is always sharing about his burpee sessions and other CrossFit workouts. While I don’t participate in CrossFit, I have watched his videos and understood his ideology. He is inspirational simply the way he shares what he is doing. He doesn’t guilt you into doing anything, his efforts are more on creating a community at FSW that promotes working out.

After way to long, this is a part of what has inspired me to get me in the gym and continue on.

The Thinning of My Department

Just today I bumped into a firefighter who probably isn’t ashamed to say he had put on some excess weight. He has lost a bunch since the last time I saw him. It is amazing. He isn’t alone. Several guys, including Willie’s Battalion Chief has lost dozens of pounds. I am amazed when I see some of these guys. Our department of 240 firefighters has offered several over the years. You see them after not being around them for a while and they are thin and trim. I try to make it a point to give them props for looking great. I am certain they appreciate it.

I know how easy it is to eat whatever the hell you want and as much as you can stuff in your mouth as quick as you can. I am still learning to have constraint when eating. After all, every once in a while I cook something that I just don’t want to stop eating. You should try my chicken salad! AMAZING…not as healthy as I would like but it doesn’t have any mayo and is excellent.

Those Guys

We all have “those guys”. You know, the ones who are built like Mack trucks. Standing next to them makes you feel like such a pussy. We have several guys who have worked out for years. They are freakishly huge, but they are stout and muscular. These are the guys who pose in firefighter calendars. I have worked around these guys for years and never had the motivation to take the first step to build muscle like them. Given, it doesn’t happen overnight…but I am working towards broadening my shoulders a little bit so that I don’t look like a high school explorer next to them!

So there you have it…that is where I am at. What about you?

You can also follow along and connect with The Fire Critic via Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and Youtube.

As seen on FailBlog.com

Addison Fire Protection District – Can this be real? FailBlog.com has this photo of the message board at Addison Fire Protection District Station #3. The message “Better to arrive late than never”..WTF? Who approved this? Maybe the Chief’s message was directed to firefighters and should have read “Better to arrive safe than never”…or maybe it is meant as a message to the citizens and should have been “Call 911 and we will get there whenever we can”.

Daily911Deals.com40% OFF MN8 Foxfire Illuminating and Reflective Helmet Tetrahedrons. EXCLUSIVE NEW PRODUCT! I think they are pretty decent tetrahedrons. Read my review here.

Firehouse Zen- Chief Mick Mayers continues to lay it down in his writings that occasionally have me seeking dictionary.com for a definition. Don’t let that dissuade you from reading though. He offers some great insight to the fire service. Check out: OKAY, IT’S 2012: NOW WHAT? and 2012: “WHAT IF?”.

Statter911.com – Dave offers a video of a house fire in Maryland. This is video posted yesterday of a December 23 fire in Upper Marlboro, Maryland (Prince George’s County) Raw Video: PGFD House Fire in Upper Marlboro. Switch to Defensive Operations

911 Memorial Stairclimbs – The majority of the stair climb events are now affiliated with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. One of the original climbs is a bit smaller scale and has a local feel. The Albequrque Stair Climb started in 2003. Read more about it here. If you are looking for a stair climb event check out http://www.9-11stairclimb.com/

Here is a lost photo I just found. This is a picture of Willie and I immediately after climbing 110 floors in Atlanta at FRI for the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb.

FireGeezer.com - A FIRE LATE SUNDAY NIGHT in a downtown brothel in Mitchell, Australia, is still deemed suspicious by the fire investigators.  The Canberra area business was closed for New Year’s Day, as all the city’s brothels were when smoke was discovered coming from The Gentlemen’s Club on Grimwade Street around 11 pm. http://firegeezer.com/2012/01/02/brothel-fire-suspicious/

The Colorado Firefighter Facebook Page - This page continues to impress me on the sharing of links and information. Check them out here and click “like”!

ELAFFHQ.com – Their latest post “Raise money for a good cause, and get a chance to win a leather helmet” is just that…a chance to win a Phenix Leather Helmet. The chances are $1 a piece and the helmet will be given away once they reach $1000 for the National Firefighters Endowment. Click here to go directly to the donation page. They are currently 1/4 of the way to their goal! The Fire Critic gave $50…If I win the helmet I will give it away to pay it forward!

Fire Service Warrior – This site continues to impress me. The latest post “Brotherhood Insurance: A Pay for What You Get Policy” by Brother Brian Brush is a great post on the Brotherhood of the Fire Service and a must read!

IronFiremen.com – America’s Fire Captain Willie Wines Jr. outdoes everyone on his End of Year Review for 2011. Even though this post probably took three weeks for his little fingers to type, it is well worth a read. See what he has accomplished this past year!

Firefighter Nation – They have the story and the video of a huge fire at a former Illinois factory here.

Happy Medic – The Happy Medic is handing out his “Best of 2011″ awards. Check them out here!

IronsandLadders.com – This blog is great on content. Their latest post “Thru-The-Lock Time Trial (storefront doors)” is just one of many great training videos available.

Brotherhood Instructors – One of the leading privately owned and operated by firefighters instructing team offers “Forcing Doors in Zero Visibility – By Andrew Brassard” Check it out and continue your learning!

FireRescue1.com – They offer this story: Authorities probe fire attacks on 4 NYC sites “Blog post that may be linked to attacks: ‘Throw 10 Molotov cocktails into these mosques and burn them down’” Read it here

I love sushi and I love wasabi. I understand the use of wasabi and how it enhances the flavor with a little spice. I would never eat a spoonful of wasabi. I don’t think this next firefighter ever will…again! He might say this is a near death experience! Maybe this is the new cinnamon dragon challenge!

Crews battle flames and smoke at Westport Presbyterian Church

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

As dozens of onlookers packed Westport Road Thursday evening, all they could do is watch as Westport Presbyterian Church burned.

“We were out in Westport and my wife got a message on Facebook saying ‘Westport’s burning,’” Luke Rocha said.

Rocha, like many others, went down to see the flames shooting from the roof of the historic church that stood at Westport and 40th street for more than 100 years.

Fire Bloggers Weigh in on The Brotherhood, Commitment to the Fire Service, and the Chicken vs. the Pig

A blog post struck a nerve with me the other day. Lt. Lemon wrote about the B word…Brotherhood at ELAFFHQ.com. The title of the post is “The Brotherhood is a Lie” It was a very interesting read. Enough to piss you off if you don’t understand it.

What ensued was a multitude of comments on the post. There are 34 comments as of this writing. I suggest you read it!

The discussion within the post mentioned above and the ones linked to below include some great articles about Brotherhood and commitment. Some are very committed, others understand the need for improvement. That is where I am at…I have room for improvement. I should train more, train harder, and commit to working out more (although I am running my first 5k tomorrow). Of all people, I am one of those guys who HAS to put my money where my mouth is. I am getting there…I draw a lot of inspiration from The Fire Service Warrior Chris Brennan (he is a machine) and Brian Brush. I should talk to Brian more…Twice now he has said exactly what I need to hear, but I need to hear it more. Either I like being called a pussy, or it is that kind of motivation I need!

I am not going to write a long article of what I think “Brotherhood” means to me. I just have a few remarks and then I have links to other great articles from other bloggers about the Brotherhood and the fire service (some are new and others are older posts). Each of these posts has something in common…what do you think it is?

The title of this article, “It’s Brotherhood…Not BestFriendShipHood” is basically my explanation of it (and yes, in my world brotherhood includes sister firefighters). You don’t have to like all of your brothers. You don’t have to get along with all of your brothers. They don’t have to like you either. Brotherhood means that when in need, you will leave your ego in your pocket and do what needs to be done…whatever that means.

Here are some other great articles:

The Brotherhood is a Lie - Lt. Lemon at ELAFFHQ.com

What happened to brotherhood? It doesn’t exist…it is a lie. At least, the “brotherhood” of which this comment speaks is a lie. It seems to be increasingly common for newer members of the fire service to EXPECT the brotherhood. They believe that as soon as they get some bunker gear, they are a solid link in the chain of fire service brethren…and that this link can never be severed. Nope. Sorry, it doesn’t work that way.

What are you going to do? – Chris Brennan at The Fire Service Warrior

So, here is where I wrap this rambling mess together. What are you going to do? Are you going to walk the walk or are your going to talk? Are you going to be ready for the Battle that Taj wrote about and for that moment when one of “THEM” need you? How are you going to get there? Are you in the Gym, are you studying, are you preparing yourself? No one else will do it for you. No municipal agency, association, or union will ever demand that you push yourself to YOUR limits of excellence. Only you can do that.

Compounding Interest - Brian Brush at The Fire Service Warrior

If you have been debating a move or you have been sitting on the sidelines of the conversation for awhile my advice to you is Jump In! The “capital” that is your experience, ideas, opinions and beliefs will only grow by what you are stashing under that heavy mattress of department culture and fear of rejection. Try making a small investment in yourself with the free market that is the American Fire Service (NYSE) and the Social/Blog network (NASDAQ) and I believe you will find a huge payoff through compounding interest. The return I have seen in support, resources, friendships and opportunity is beyond what I ever imagined would have been my potential.I am better for taking risk, I am getting better because of the risks of others.

The Battle – Taj Meyers at QueenCityBurns

My hose line pushes me back as I make my attack on the monster. The forces I’m facing are great but I am greater. Not because I am strong but because my brother, behind me, gives me all the strength I lack. This unspoken synchronicity is attributed to hours of practice, sometimes late into the night. Practicing, while girlfriends’ calls went straight to voicemail, while turkey and avocado omelets (instead of pizza) went cold on the dining room table, while great sports games aired on tv, we were on the apron, we were in the engine bay, practicing.

Uh oh. Here we go with the B word again – Jason Jefferies at Working The Job

Once more, I’m not against calling another fireman brother, or being called the same by another.  But, just because we see one another in the mall and we both have a t-shirt emblazoned with the Maltese cross on it does not mean you are my brother.  Brotherhood has nothing to do with working the same job, being members of the same department or even riding the same company.  This may seem shocking to you, but not all firemen are the philanthropic, generous, heroic types that romance novels and cheesy movies portray.  Most are great guys, but there are a few that are dirty rotten bastards that will cut your throat (metaphorically) to advance their position.  That’s why I don’t throw around the B word.  And I urge you to do the same.  Take ownership of it, and when someone deserves it, use it.  Just not ALL the time!

Brotherhood… on a soapbox… - Gary at Coffee talk around the tailboard

If you aren’t smart enough to know the job and its dangers… to recognize the importance of each man and the bond and oath he’s taken… to prepare every day for the inevitable battle that is always coming… then this is your wake up call. You are weak. You are unskilled. You are unsafe to stand next to in battle. We don’t want you. We don’t need you. We don’t like you. Because you are no Brother to us at all. You are the enemy.

Involved vs. Committed – Jason Jefferies at Working The Job

I’ll leave you with this. If you see room to improve your level of committment, then do it.  Just know that by being one of the few that is honestly committed to this job you will never walk the easy path.  Commitment is tough, just ask the pig.

What is the Brotherhood among Firefighters? – Rhett Fleitz at The Fire Critic

If you were to take a firefighter and strip them of their badge, remove their turnout gear, peel their skin back, and remove the organs, the brotherhood is that small fire that continues to burn inside of them.

Not that my writing belongs in the same list as these others, it was an article I wrote about what I felt about brotherhood.

Getting it on video…That is the difference between making a great speech to 10 people and making it to thousands. Brian Brush recently talked to a recruit class about what the fire service should mean to them, what it means to him, and why we should take pride in serving.

Brian Brush has just recently delved into more social media usage and is posting articles over on the Fire Engineering Community.

Brian Brush as he participates in the 9/11 Stair Climb during FDIC...in full turnout gear and SCBA.

His post “On Firefighter Training: Being Your Best Is Their Best Chance” was followed up with “A message to the recruits, myself or maybe even you?”.

The mission will not stop for hurt feelings. The most common injury in the fire service is hurt feelings. Too often it isn’t even the act of hurting feelings but the fear that something could hurt feelings that delays a program, decision or action. You must temper yourself and your reactions to critique and criticism if you expect others to respond objectively in the name of progress. (Brian Brush)

Solid performance and writing!

Some of our best is not practiced, planned, or given a second chance…Brian delivered a great speech!

Brian has also been instrumental in the creation and spread of the 9/11 stair climb events for the NFFF.

More on the 9/11 stair climb event and how you can participate and get involved here.
