Helmet Camera: Fatal House Fire Caught on Video

Video by: High Def Helmet. Video info: Firefighters were called to reports of a home on fire around 4 am. First arriving units arrived to find a two story home with heavy fire showing from the first floor with extension rapidly moving to the second floor. Reports came in there was possibly one person still inside the home. The Engine Co. made an interior attack to search & make a stop. As the scene unfolded the structure became unstable and Command pulled all crews out & defensive operations were put into place. There was a collapse of the roof structure and partial collapse to the rear of the home. Master streams were used to bring the blaze under control & unfortunately one person was confirmed dead at the scene.

The last day of 2007 was when it all began for us. Right at shift change the alarm went off for a Structure Fire two blocks from the station. A large two story house with heavy fire and plenty of work to do. During overhaul, I noticed something on one of the Truck guys helmet and soon found out he fixed a sport helmet cam to his lid. After watching the video I was hooked! I soon bought one and began shooting every fire I was knocked out on. I searched the web and watched as many fire videos as I could and still to this day I can’t get enough. Fire Helmet Cameras have evolved over a few short years and there are tons of makes and models to choose from, but what I couldn’t find was an HD cam that can stand up to the abuse of Firefighting and still be relatively affordable. So, we did what Firefighters have long done…We made our own way. We banded together with a top quality HD camera manufacturer to bring you a highly durable, heat and water resistant fire helmet camera that cost half of what other companies are charging.

7. 2013 Firefighter Calendars

Not all firefighters are calendar models…however, the ones who are are well worth gracing the pages of calendars. Many firefighting calendars raise money for charity. Most of the calendars feature actual firefighters. Trust me, these calendars are good! To save space, I have simply linked to the Top Ten lists of calendars I put together recently.

6. Custom Made Kilt

2. National Firefighters Endowment Officer’s Club

Several people put down donating to the NY/NJ Firefighters in need when asked about Christmas gifts. Here is a way of giving all year long to FD’s in need.

The National Firefighters Endowment “Officer’s Club” is the gift that keeps on giving. The Officer’s club is a funding mechanism for the NFE and funds donations to fire departments in need. However, those who join get a lot more in return.

  • Each year, the members get a numbered custom made challenge coin.
  • Each month, the members are entered to win a prize. These prizes have been valued at up to $500 a piece depending on what the prize is for that month.
  • On Facebook, they are invited to a closed group that offers a place for like minded individuals to communicate as well as offer input on decisions made by the NFE.
  • The membership dues go directly to funding assistance, purchasing tools and equipment, and supporting fire departments.
  • The NFE offers three tier levels for joining the Officer’s club.
And yes…The Fire Critic is a Chief Level Member of the Officer’s Club

More on the NFE on their web siteMore on the Officer’s club here and below:

The Officers Club is an exclusive group of brothers and sisters who have made a pledge to participate in NFE’s mission; to provide our nation’s firefighters with life saving equipment. Their monthly contributions are responsible for every piece of equipment that National Firefighters Endowment is able to place in service. That’s right, the membership is personally responsible for putting the tools in the hands of our heroes and making sure they come home safe to their families.

1. Custom Leather Firefighting Accessories

Custom leather shields, radio straps, glove straps, suspenders, chin straps, and other items are a great way for a firefighter to show off his/her PRIDE of Firefighting. Although some of these items probably won’t be ready and shipped by Christmas, you should look into getting your firefighter a gift certificate or credit to one of these great companies. That way, your firefighter can get the item personalized exactly the way they want!

Helmet Cam: Heavy Fire, An Exposure, and a LP Tank Venting Hamper Crews with Detatched Garage Fire

This is the second helmet cam video of the day (the other one is here). It is good to see a solid tip being used in this fire.

From :

Firefighters were faced with a fully involved detatched garage with direct flame impingement to the rear of the home. Crews with limited manpower, heavy fire & an LP tank venting took a defensive position before being able to control the blaze. Firefighters were onscene for several hours and no occupants or Firefighters were injured during the incident.

Lansdowne Fire Company – Deleware County, PA (web site here)

Sunday, July 15, 2012.  Just after dinner time, LFCO was dispatched to the 100 block of Lansdowne Court. PD arrived on location with fire showing and the assignment was quickly upgraded to a working fire. Engine 19 hit the street, picked up a hydrant 650ft away, and layed in. Engine 19 arrived to find fire showing from the 1st floor windows of sides alpha and delta. While the officer assumed command, the line-man quickly stretched a 1 3/4″ pre-connect  as the control-man forced the front door. The team found a few rooms involved and made quick work on the fire. Truck 19 crew assisted with the primary search, ladder placement, and ventilation, while Pipeline19 assisted with water supply. This fire is still under investigation. Big thanks go out to mutual aid from company’s 24, 16, 09, 04, 03, 43, and 47.  Units were on location for several hours. Great job and quick stop.

Another great video from FDCam.com

One thing is for sure…The FDCam is able to stand up to a beating as witnessed in this video. Captain Wines and I both have one installed on our helmets, you never know what video we might come up with…

From FDCam.com:

5/23/12- Jacksonville
FDCam.com
Firefighters were dispatched for a smoke investigation. Upon entering the neighborhood Firefighters recognized the familiar smell of a structure on fire. Upon arrival, an Engine Co. found a single story home with heavy fire showing. After calling for additional units the crew went to work locating the fire & securing all occupants were out of the home. After locating the fire, firefighters pulled ceiling while exposing a heavily involved attic space. After a short period with no water an additional Engine Co. & Taker were used to secure water & the fire was placed under control.

This fire was in Jacksonville, Florida on May 14, 2012 on Cinancy Street. The fire was captured on film by a helmet camera and shared by FDCam.com.

You just can’t win them all can you?

Check out more vids on FDCam.com and their Youtube page. I just wonder when they are going to send me one to try out!

Video info:

Jacksonville, FL
Crews were called for a mid-day structure fire. Fire crews found a large home (approx. 4000sqft) with heavy fire showing from the attic space of the second floor. Initial crews made a search to confirm no one was in the home and secondary units contained first floor fires. After little progress was made units were called out of the building and the fire was darkend down with master streams. Crews were sent back up to contain the fire but were eventually pulled from the home & the fire was contained with defensive tactics.
