Welcome to a new column here on FireCritic.com. I am shooting for having this column run on Tuesdays each week. If you have something you want to share whether you are a reader or blogger, have a video or photo, or anything else just let me know.

The Best of the Rest is a column featuring other bloggers, videos, news, and information you might have missed over the past week or so. Enjoy!

You can also follow along and connect with The Fire Critic via Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and Youtube.

As seen on FailBlog.com

Addison Fire Protection District – Can this be real? FailBlog.com has this photo of the message board at Addison Fire Protection District Station #3. The message “Better to arrive late than never”..WTF? Who approved this? Maybe the Chief’s message was directed to firefighters and should have read “Better to arrive safe than never”…or maybe it is meant as a message to the citizens and should have been “Call 911 and we will get there whenever we can”.

Daily911Deals.com40% OFF MN8 Foxfire Illuminating and Reflective Helmet Tetrahedrons. EXCLUSIVE NEW PRODUCT! I think they are pretty decent tetrahedrons. Read my review here.

Firehouse Zen- Chief Mick Mayers continues to lay it down in his writings that occasionally have me seeking dictionary.com for a definition. Don’t let that dissuade you from reading though. He offers some great insight to the fire service. Check out: OKAY, IT’S 2012: NOW WHAT? and 2012: “WHAT IF?”.

Statter911.com – Dave offers a video of a house fire in Maryland. This is video posted yesterday of a December 23 fire in Upper Marlboro, Maryland (Prince George’s County) Raw Video: PGFD House Fire in Upper Marlboro. Switch to Defensive Operations

911 Memorial Stairclimbs – The majority of the stair climb events are now affiliated with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. One of the original climbs is a bit smaller scale and has a local feel. The Albequrque Stair Climb started in 2003. Read more about it here. If you are looking for a stair climb event check out http://www.9-11stairclimb.com/

Here is a lost photo I just found. This is a picture of Willie and I immediately after climbing 110 floors in Atlanta at FRI for the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb.

FireGeezer.com - A FIRE LATE SUNDAY NIGHT in a downtown brothel in Mitchell, Australia, is still deemed suspicious by the fire investigators.  The Canberra area business was closed for New Year’s Day, as all the city’s brothels were when smoke was discovered coming from The Gentlemen’s Club on Grimwade Street around 11 pm. http://firegeezer.com/2012/01/02/brothel-fire-suspicious/

The Colorado Firefighter Facebook Page - This page continues to impress me on the sharing of links and information. Check them out here and click “like”!

ELAFFHQ.com – Their latest post “Raise money for a good cause, and get a chance to win a leather helmet” is just that…a chance to win a Phenix Leather Helmet. The chances are $1 a piece and the helmet will be given away once they reach $1000 for the National Firefighters Endowment. Click here to go directly to the donation page. They are currently 1/4 of the way to their goal! The Fire Critic gave $50…If I win the helmet I will give it away to pay it forward!

Fire Service Warrior – This site continues to impress me. The latest post “Brotherhood Insurance: A Pay for What You Get Policy” by Brother Brian Brush is a great post on the Brotherhood of the Fire Service and a must read!

IronFiremen.com – America’s Fire Captain Willie Wines Jr. outdoes everyone on his End of Year Review for 2011. Even though this post probably took three weeks for his little fingers to type, it is well worth a read. See what he has accomplished this past year!

Firefighter Nation – They have the story and the video of a huge fire at a former Illinois factory here.

Happy Medic – The Happy Medic is handing out his “Best of 2011″ awards. Check them out here!

IronsandLadders.com – This blog is great on content. Their latest post “Thru-The-Lock Time Trial (storefront doors)” is just one of many great training videos available.

Brotherhood Instructors – One of the leading privately owned and operated by firefighters instructing team offers “Forcing Doors in Zero Visibility – By Andrew Brassard” Check it out and continue your learning!

FireRescue1.com – They offer this story: Authorities probe fire attacks on 4 NYC sites “Blog post that may be linked to attacks: ‘Throw 10 Molotov cocktails into these mosques and burn them down’” Read it here

I love sushi and I love wasabi. I understand the use of wasabi and how it enhances the flavor with a little spice. I would never eat a spoonful of wasabi. I don’t think this next firefighter ever will…again! He might say this is a near death experience! Maybe this is the new cinnamon dragon challenge!

Crews battle flames and smoke at Westport Presbyterian Church

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

As dozens of onlookers packed Westport Road Thursday evening, all they could do is watch as Westport Presbyterian Church burned.

“We were out in Westport and my wife got a message on Facebook saying ‘Westport’s burning,’” Luke Rocha said.

Rocha, like many others, went down to see the flames shooting from the roof of the historic church that stood at Westport and 40th street for more than 100 years.

LODD – Dixon Rural Fire Protection District Captain Leslie “Les” Clark

Captain Clark,80, passed away on January 20, 2011.

According to the USFA:

Captain Clark passed away after suffering a medical emergency while responding to a reported structure fire. Captain Clark was operating a tanker when he advised a crew member that he felt as if he might pass out, and then lost consciousness. The other firefighter reached over and applied the air brake to stop the vehicle. He and firefighters from the apparatus following the tanker removed Captain Clark and began CPR. Ground and Air ambulances were summoned to the scene and treatment continued. Captain Clark, however, did not survive his injury and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Maries County Coroner.

Edmonton Firefighters Fashion on Fire is Charity Fund Raising Genius

This morning, I was checking out FiregroundVideo.com (another site I run that is auto-fed youtube videos on fire service topics). One video caught my eye about dancing firefighters. I watched it and it led me to Fashion on Fire (FashiononFire.com).

Visit the Edmonton Firefighters IAFF Local 209 online here

Fashion on Fire is a charity event hosted by the Edmonton Firefighters.

All I can say is WOW! These guys really know how to raise money, have fun, and entertain the crowd. These guys have obviously put a lot of time and effort into this event, choreographing, and practicing.

They are currently working on getting video posted from the 2010 event, but they have plenty to share from 2009. I will post an article with 2010 videos when they are available.

In 2009 they raised $25k for their charities. The 2010 event figures are not in yet, but they expect the money raised to be around $55k.

If you would like more information on this event or creating your own “Fashion on Fire” event in your area please check out FashiononFire.com or contact Founder/Director Cristian Munoz via email.

With seats going for $150 and an expectation of a complete sellout in 2011, I can only imagine that this event has raised a good bit of coin for the charities. Those charities are Muscular Dystrophy Canada, The Edmonton Firefighters Memorial, and the Firefighters Burn Treatment Society Edmonton Chapter.

Just watch some of the videos below. You can find all of the video from the 2009 event here.

The Fire Critic Has Arrived! I have Started a Thread that was Closed by the WebChief on Firefighter Nation!

Maybe I am alone in my joy, but I feel as though I have finally arrived!

I started a thread titled “Should Felons be allowed to be Firefighters?” on Firefighter Nation

The link is here

The forum topic got 22 pages of comments over the past 4 months almost to the day. Over that 4 months, the discussion would fade off and every couple of weeks it would get revived and many more comments would be added.  The total was somewhere around 260 comments.

That isn’t too bad. I actually left the discussion after making my point that NO, felons should not be firefighters. Many said that some felonies were not bad. I then asked anyone to name a GOOD felony. No takers.

The WebChief closed the discussion because: “Thread closed….has been active for some time. Non firefighters may be removed from the site.”

I admit I have not been following the discussion recently and I am sure that the WebChief has good reason to close the thread. It must have something to do with the non-firefighters fueling the fire. I can’t be the length of time. Hell, the “Word Association Game” thread has been going for over a year and a half with over 20,000 replies. So it can’t be the length of time!

Don’t worry, I am not mad. I am relieved….because I have finally arrived!

Now, you might be asking what I arrived at…I am not completely sure. But I have had a thread closed by the WebChief on Firefighter Nation and that has to count for something…

Should Sex Offenders Be Firefighters? What about Pardoned ones?

Can Sex Offenders be firefighters? Should sex offenders be firefighters? What about pardoned ones?

I am currently working on a story and one of the intriguing details is that a current firefighter WAS a convicted sex offender. The person was pardoned and is not a registered sex offender. The offense was bad (they all are). The offense happened 30 years ago prior to the current laws that protect us from these criminals. Should he be allowed to be a firefighter?

Here are my thoughts. Sex offenders should not be firefighters. I do not know of a National standard or regulation on this issue. However, if this man was pardoned and the infraction occurred prior to current regulations should he/she still be punished for a crime they was pardoned for? After all, they were pardoned and basically the crime is no longer part of their wrap sheet (hopefully there is nothing else). This is basically a loophole due to previously lackadaisical laws.

I just wonder if fire departments can legally disqualify someone from being a firefighter for something that might not show up on their background check. I am not sure it would in this case, but what if someone brought it to the FD’s attention.

The questions are:

  • Should sex offenders be allowed to be firefighters? What about EMT’s?
  • Should previously pardoned sex offenders be allowed to be firefighters?
  • What about EMT’s?
  • Does your department look for this information in their background checks?

Here are some articles I found on the topic of sex offender/firefighters:

NSOPR – National Sex Offender Public Registry

FBI Sex Offender Registry

You might remember a while back that I posted a question on Firefighter Nation about Felons being firefighters. That discussion continues to spark interest from time to time and the conversation is rehashed. My answer remains to be NO. Several people said that it depended on the crime. My reply….Name a GOOD Felony! I didn’t think so. Felonies are felonies for a reason. They are crimes.

Video Coverage: Northern California Mall, Roseville Galleria Burns

Firefighter Nation has the story of the Roseville Galleria Fire in Northern California here.

City officials said part of the roof on the mall’s south end collapsed as huge clouds of black smoke poured from the 1.3 million-square-foot Roseville Galleria, which is about 17 miles east of the state capital.

A supposed armed man had barricaded himself in the mall and set the place on fire.

First Due Blog Carnival Edition 5 – Minimum Standards

I was hoping to get a few more submissions to this months First Due Blog Carnival. In the end, it took until today for me to sit down and pen my own. Things have been busy, but you don’t need me to tell you that.

If you want to host next months carnival let me know!

The topic this month was Minimum Standards. I asked what should the minimum standards should be, why we should have them, and why we don’t have them already.

As always, we have some great insight on the topic!

Below is a link to each submission for this month and a short excerpt from the article. They will open in a new window.

Firefighters Enemy – Blog Carnival 5: Minimum Standards?
Personally, I believe that there needs to be, at least at the state level, a system that requires continuing education and minimum job performance evaluations.  I have heard that the last thing the fire service needs is more unfunded mandates required by non-firefighting personnel.  To that comment, I agree.  However, it cannot be overlooked that we are in a time and era of firefighting like we have never seen before.  We have all heard someone say that “this ain’t your father’s fire service anymore.”

Firehouse Zen – It’s The Minimum
Unless your organization is living in a 1950’s time warp, the people in your community, when they call the fire department for help, expect help for many things that exceed the scope of “firefighting”.  Regardless of whether your community is staffed with a career or a volunteer department, there are increased expectations on the level of service being provided.  I can rationally argue the need for standards on a number of different levels.  I will, however, only provide you with this one today; it’s the minimum.

Unlimited-Unscheduled Hours – We don’t need no Stinking Standards
For Volunteers, I feel that the equivalent of a nationally certified Firefighter one is acceptable as ENTRY LEVEL into the firefighting game, but it should not stop there and certifications should continue over time. There should also be a continuing ed program which can be rolled up into normal training cycles to keep the firefighter abreast of changes in technology, new threats and tactics. This stuff never ends and we all need to stay up on the things that can kill us. If you don’t have time to train, you don’t have time for the job either.

TNFireNews.com – Minimum Standards for Firefighters
Having been in the fire service less than 10 years, I consider myself a probie to the service. I have never worn a long turnout coat w/ hip boots, or used my beard as an SCBA. I do, however, enjoy listening to the stories from the 20-30 year guys at my department tell me about how things have changed. Along with these changes have come different requirements in hiring and/or accepting volunteers. Within the last few years, I have witnessed my career department transition to the CPAT test(Candidate Physical Ability Testing), and my volunteer department has begun implementing a more strenuous physical agility test.

Firefighter Nation – Competent vs. Proficient by Scott Cook
Let’s consider a firefighter straight out of the academy. Technically speaking, that person has the competencies necessary to perform all the tasks required of someone who rides backward on an engine: drag hose, throw ladders, search and rescue, etc. After all, he’s demonstrated the requisite knowledge and skills time and again in the Academy, and (likely) passed the academy’s final written and skills exam, as well as the state’s certifying written and skills exam. – note that this was submitted by someone other than the author and I think it fits!

Last and maybe least is my own post on the subject here on the Fire Critic

Fire Critic – Minimum Standards for “A person who fights fires”?
Across the Nation, State to State, City to City, town to town, and fire department to fire department the meaning of the term “firefighter” is different. Merriam Webster defines it as “a person who fights fires”. That about sums it up doesn’t it…Goodnight! Wait a minute…that is way to easy. You mean that I have devoted my life to a profession, a job, a career, a lifestyle and that is all I get in the damn dictionary?

Controlling The Fire Service Media…Bloggers Keep The News Flowing!

Firehouse.com, FireEngineering.com, FireRescue1.com, FirefighterNation.com, and many other web sites are great places to get your news and opinion. Some of them have magazines in print which have been around much longer. Print magazines are great for news and information, but cannot compete with the more instant ability to publish online.

Fire and/or EMS service blogs can be another form of online news site. Maybe not all blogs publish news all the time, but most do from time to time.

Probably the epitome of fire service news blogs are STATTer911.com or FireGeezer.com, although any other blogs cover news events from around the world.

The news doesn’t have to be breaking news either. Many bloggers are great writers and offer free original content on their sites. Take Chris Naum’s CompanyOfficer.com and CommandSafety.com, Mick Mayer’s FirehouseZen.com, or Art Goodrich’s ChiefReason.com. They all offer top notch writing and insight.

Naturally, the larger media companies created blogs. Firehouse.com and FireEngineering.com offer blogs from some of their contributing editors. FireRescue1 and FirefighterNation took a little bit different route.

FireRescue1.com came up with the Kitchen Table; a conglomerate of bloggers which for the most part offers syndicated material from the authors own blog hosted elsewhere.

FirefighterNation.com is a hybrid site. Part message board, part news site, part blog network, part social network site. They offer blogs for any member who wants to publish in the format. In addition, FireEMSBlogs.com was loosely created out of the site.

What I have found most interesting is how many bloggers will break news stories, write articles, or other information that soon after you will see in the mainstream fire service media.

Sure, it is given that if a news story breaks that the mainstream fire service media is going to cover it. However, what is ironic is the other stuff. Articles written on various topics are obviously read and then soon after you will see another article on the topic in one of the larger media outlets.

I have about 5 examples from the last month…including stuff heard over podcasting later to be revealed in an article elsewhere.

It just goes to show that bloggers matter and are doing a great job! Keep up the great work…

In Retrospect…The FireEMSBlogs.com Meetup

The FireEMSBlogs.com meetup was a huge success. The event was hosted by Fire Rescue Magazine, Firefighter Nation, and FireEMSBlogs.com. The event was also sponsored by Black Helmet and Black Diamond Boots.

My time at FDIC was a blast. We managed to pack the week full of friends, fun, and work (Firefighter Netcast). The people I have met through this blog, twitter, facebook, etc. will stay with me for a long time. Our occasional chance to meet is always fun!

L-R Chris Kaiser, Art Goodrich, Rhett Fleitz, Justin Schorr, John Mitchell, Tiger Schmittendorf, Chris Hebert, Dave Iannone, Chris Naum, Bill Carey

L-R Chris Kaiser, Art Goodrich, Rhett Fleitz, Tiger Schmittendorf, John Mitchell, Justin Schorr, Chris Hebert, Mike Ward (if you look close between Chris and Dave in the back), Dave Iannone, Chris Naum, Bill Carey

Whether it be through commenting on each others blogs, following each other on twitter, being friends on facebook, or any other of the many social mediums we stay connected. We know when each other are having a bad day, working, having a birthday, or whatever.

There may not be an exact core of the fire/EMS interwebs, but it grows daily. Mostly it is championed by several leaders. And yes, the Fire and the EMS interwebs are connected. The leaders are not self proclaimed or “formal” leaders. They might not even realize they are leaders. However, they have a following and stay connected to others through social media. These leaders have “tribes” or followers and the various tribes are interconnected as well. I would name a few but I would probably leave out many. The point isn’t the leaders, but the followers. Most of the leaders are followers in other tribes and so on… You get the point.

We all have a stake in this and we are all working towards the same goal…connecting.

One way of connecting is by meeting up. One of those meetups was held this past weekend at FDIC.

The night began with a get together for several of the bloggers. Consider it some down time for the guys/gals to network before the crowd arrived.

I had a great time meeting and talking to everyone!

I was honored to be asked to announce the winners of the raffle items. There were Black Helmet Hats, $100 gift certificates to Black Helmet Apparel, Firefighter Monopoly, and a pair of Black Diamond Boots given away.

A lot of thanks from John and myself to Chris, Dave, Bill, Paul, Jeff, Tim, Shannon, Olga, and everyone else!

All in all it was a huge success… I will give the rest via photos of the night!

FDIC in Retrospect…Great Time, Great People, Great Netcasts

I managed to attend FDIC this year for the first time. I was there in the official capacity as co-host of Firefighter Netcast along with John Mitchell (FireDaily.com). I was also there representing The Fire Critic and many other projects I am in.

I must state first and foremost…

Tim Sendelbach, Shannon Pieper, and Paul Andrews at the Fire Rescue Magazine Booth

Tim Sendelbach, Shannon Pieper, and Paul Andrews at the Fire Rescue Magazine Booth

A sincere thanks to Fire Rescue Magazine, Firefighter Nation, and FireEMSBlogs.com for sharing their booth with Firefighter Netcast. Special thanks to Dave Iannone, Chris Hebert, Tim Sendelbach, and Jeff Berend as well as the rest of the crews of the aforementioned companies. The hospitality, networking, assistance, and conversation was very much appreciated!

Firefighter Netcast made its debut at FDIC pulling off 2 live netcasts from the show floor as well as around 10 hours of total audio. The first live netcast featured Ray Gayk and Billy Goldfeder and the second with Tiger Schmittendorf and Tom Merrill. We had to scratch on the live netcast with Ron Siarnicki and Cathy Hedrick on Friday, although we did tape the podcast. The netcasts are online and the other audio will be presented as podcasts and should be published on FirefighterNetcast.com once we complete editing this week.

The rundown of the week…

Rhett Fleitz, @Fire_Captain (twitter), Chris Kaiser, Justin Schorr, and John Mitchell

Rhett Fleitz, Jason Quimbly aka @Fire_Captain (twitter), Chris Kaiser, Justin Schorr, and John Mitchell

The hijinx began with John picking me up at the airport…. This guy is like my wife (not always right, but never wrong). We get a long well and it only took a little while for me to piss him off! Then again, and again, and again!

We had lunch with Chris Hebert, Dave Iannone, and Bill Carey and enjoyed the company. These guys are a riot to hang out with unless you get Bill riled up and he starts yelling!

John and I picked Tiger up at the airport where the real fun began. John and I were both meeting him for the first time. If you were in the truck with us, you would think we had known each other for years (years I will continue to try to get back).

Tiger’s wife couldn’t understand how he would just get off a plane and into a vehicle with people he has never met. That is how we are. We wondered the same thing… especially with us! We were going to take him to dinner at Chucky Cheese! That would have sealed the deal!

Rhett Fleitz, Ron Siarnicki, Cathy Hedrick, and John Mitchell

Rhett Fleitz, Ron Siarnicki, Cathy Hedrick, and John Mitchell

We also met up with Fred Simon (FirstResponderLiablility.com). He is a lawyer and a firefighter! Our first show on Thursday was with him and we plan on having more commentary with Fred in the future!

Just to show how well we get along with others… I ended up sharing my room with Fred for two nights. He had intentions of commuting back and forth to Louisville, but I wouldn’t have it. Fred is a great guy and we had a great time hanging out with him!

John and I had a very busy show. As a matter of fact, we were so busy that we only had a little bit of time to get around to many other exhibitors at the show. I never did make it over to the Lucas Oil Stadium to see all of the apparatus. That was a bummer.

Rhett Fleitz (The Fire Critic) poses with the booth babes at Black Diamond Boots!

Rhett Fleitz (The Fire Critic) poses with the booth babes at Black Diamond Boots!

As I said before, I did make it to one spot and these booth babes hounded me to have their picture taken with me! What can I say… The Fire Critic is on the up and up!

Sorry I wasn’t able to get around to taking a ton of photos with the babes…work had to be done.

However, you can check out the following links for more pictures and information on our time at FDIC!

Justin Schorr (The Happy Medic) and Chris Kaiser (Life Under The Lights) met up with us and became part of the entourage that is many of the bloggers, followers, and twitter friends of FireEMSBlogs.com blogs.

Chris McCorkle (BlackJack Holder) and Rhett Fleitz

Chris McCorkle (BlackJack Holder) and Rhett Fleitz

I also got to meet and hang out with Chief Reason Art Goodrich (ChiefReasonArt.com). To me, this guy is somewhat of a Fire Service Legend. He is one of those guys who emboddied the great things about Firehouse.com forums, then a creator (If I am not mistaken) of IACOJ, then on to Firefighter Nation, and finally culminating with his own blog. Art is a GREAT guy! He is opinionated and sticks to his guns. He is very articulate with his comments and his depth of knowledge shines through when he talks. You would think this guy has an entire research team that provides him with a thesis before he opens his mouth… It is that good! Many thanks to Art for snapping a lot of the photos we got at our booth!

The team at Fire Rescue Magazine was very helpful with Firefighter Netcast. I am not sure they understood what it is we were planning on doing, but they seemed to be impressed with our delivery!

Brandon Roark and Rhett Fleitz

Brandon Roark and Rhett Fleitz

I got to meet up with a ton of guys who stopped by to see me and what we were doing as well. Some of these guys I have known through the internet for years. Guys like Brandon Roark (South Bend Indiana), Jason Quimbly (@Fire_Captain on twitter), Robbie and Danny Owens (Henrico Division of Fire, VA), Some guys who know me via VAFireNews.com from Portsmouth, Chris McCorkle of BlackJack Holder, Martin Grube (FireRescueTV.com), David Furtado (The Battalion), and many others.

I was able meet up with Jason Hoevelmann (FirefightersEnemy.com), who presented his class and actually had to turn people away it was so packed. Jason will be a future guest on our show!

Tiger Schmittendorf took John and I to the ISFSI party and I got to meet Dan Shaw and Nick Martin (Traditions Training). We recently had them on Firefighter Netcast and enjoyed meeting them in person!

At the ISFSI party, I got to meet Billy Goldfeder for the first time as well as Christopher Naum (CommandSafety.com and TheCompanyOfficer.com). Chris was a guest of our show on Friday and has been on our show as a caller in the past. I spoke with Doug Cline who will be presenting in my area in September.

The Wild Beaver...Our office in the late night!

The Wild Beaver...Our office in the late night!

Our late evenings were spent at the Wild Beaver. The Wild Beaver is kinda like a Coyote Ugly and was packed with firefighters! Plenty of networking and drinking went on there!

If you are in Indianapolis, the best steaks we had were at St. Elmo’s and Harry and Izzy’s.

Not to worry, if your name doesn’t appear in this post it will in the future. I still have to do a post on the FireEMSBlogs.com meetup! That will be coming soon!

Then we will have several posts up here and at Firefighter Netcast on the netcasting and podcasting that was done! Come back often to check it out! There are also a ton of other photos to share!

There are many ways to keep in tune with the Fire Critic.

We also have some very nice merchandise available. The Fire Critic Beer Stein is a hit, as is the apron and the shirts. However, we deliver a solid way of showing your loved one you care…the Fire Critic thong.

We also run the occasional contest here at the Fire Critic. Look for another one in the future. The last one was held on twitter, so be sure to follow @FireCritic!

I also do product reviews. If you have  a product you would like me to review just check out the terms here.

Editorial Suicide or Expert Marketing…”Another Noose”

The other day, Cindy Devone-Pacheco wrote a blog post on Firefighter Nation titled “Another Noose”.

The post has sparked a lot of conversation both here and here. Mick Mayers gave his side here.

The basis of Captain Busy’s argument is that he doesn’t agree with race being used to stir the pot

What is not right is the use of race issues, religion or sexual preference to stir the pot, make people angry and point fingers at folks who quite frankly (if they are anything like me) were surprised to read such an obvious attempt to get folks to respond.

Kali goddess of destruction started another thread that pretty much says the same thing:

The below article, written by by an editor at FireRescue, which owns FFN, paints the entire Fire Service as racist for the sole purpose of generating “buzz” or traffic to this website.

If you continue reading the discussion moves on to Cindy and her job security, the webchief and his moderation ability, Tim and his apology for Cindy, and about a ton of other analogies for those of us that didn’t think the KKK reference was bad enough.

Here are some issues though (yes I am playing  both sides of the field):

1. User terms of service #14 for FFN: in a manner that is hateful or discriminatory based on race, color, sex, religion, nationality, ethnic or national origin, marital status, disability, sexual orientation or age or is otherwise objectionable, as reasonably determined by Ning;

Were there any complaints of the “white guy” reference being hateful or discriminatory towards white people or “guys”? If this fits the criteria and any other comments/blogs have been deleted because of the same infringement then the webchief needs to draw a more permanent line in the sand of what can and cannot be said.

2. What would have happened if they had just removed the entire blog post?

You guys would be sitting in a padded room clutching a teddy bear and sucking your thumbs! You guys freak out when stuff gets deleted. Oh but wait…you didn’t agree with it being up there so it is a catch 22.

3. Should she have apologized?

I think so. It was a poor choice of words. Tim can’t be but so pissed because I am sure it did great things for traffic! Some people have vowed to not read the magazine anymore….cry me a river.

I think that Captain and Kali missed the boat though. Of course it was about engaging readers. Sure the statement might have been strong, but if it weren’t to entice the readers it wouldn’t have been written at all. After all, we are all just a bunch of narcissists writing blogs, writing in forums, and responding to others.

Some of the responding users did hit the nail on the head with the real issue (comparing the fire service to the KKK).

Writers want people to read our stuff. Whether you are writing a book, a blog, an article, or a comment we want it to be read. With that being said we have to be responsible for what we write and have the balls to stand up for it. Cindy wrote it and published it…it is history now.

Here is my take. I don’t appreciate Cindy insinuating that I am part of a brotherhood that is an extension of the KKK. Me being a “white guy” as she called it and a firefighter would lead me to believe that she is indeed talking about me.

But does it really piss me off? NO. A comment like this won’t make me quit a subscription, stop using FFN, or anything else. If anything, it entices me to read more from Cindy to see what she is all about….”Expert Marketing” unless of course she gets the can in which it would become “Editorial Suicide”!

NBC's Trauma Premiers Monday Night

Tomorrow night, NBC’s Trauma premiers. There is a chance I will be involved on a podcast of sorts about the new show. I have not worked out all the logistical stuff and realize I am way out of my league with guys like Jamie Davis (Mediccast.com), Greg Friese (EMS EduCast), and Chris Montera (EMS Garage). There will be live tweeting during the show. Look for #traumashow.

Yeah, I know. What the hell am I doing with these guys. Better yet, what the hell are they doing with me. Well apparently, these guys put it together and somewhere along the line my name was brought up. Probably because I like to talk. Either way, we all know those paramedical types need a little grounding every once in while right. I’m kidding!

If you want a kill joy, you can read the less then appealing review of “Trauma” by A.J. Heightman is Editor-in-Chief of JEMS you can read it here. It is a very detailed…ok it is the entire show in text pretty much. I must say that I am looking forward to the opening scene. Not that we don’t see enough sex on Rescue Me.

The premiere of Trauma doesn’t begin with a well-dressed crew checking their drugs and equipment before their first run. It starts with the sights and sounds of the boyfriend/girlfriend crew having sex in the patient compartment of their rig.

Then, before you can get the words “I can’t believe it” out of your lips, you hear the dispatcher (who obviously knows the way the crew starts their shift), tell “Naughty Nancy” Carnahan to button her blouse and respond to an emergency call.

The Fire Critic says: What the hell? I thought all medics started out the shifted by getting screwed…right when the Captain says…your on the box!

As for sex in the firehouse…this is more realistic of what it looks like. With all the glory at the end. Get the F@!# out of my F#@#$ing Gear! WARNING: Male Buttocks nude…maybe NSFW.

Should Felons be allowed to be Firefighters?

House fire on Library Street in Mystic, CT

Should Felons be allowed to by Firefighters? That is the title of a forum thread I started over at Firefighter Nation. I started it there instead of here because I was sure to get more commentary over there. Please join in the discussion if you would like either here or there.

I have enjoyed the discussion and I am pretty sure that I have come to the understanding that there ARE NOT any GOOD FELONIES that might be ok for a person to have been convicted of and become a firefighter. Period.

I think I might have a decent example which ties this post to my current vacationing up near Mystic, CT. I am talking about last years arson fire on Library Street started by a then Mystic Firefighter William Celtruda. The house still stands (I saw it today) as the owners attempt to sue the pants off of Mystic Fire District, some firefighters, and the town of Groton (link).

While Celtruda WAS NOT a felon when he became a firefighter, he did have some run ins with the law prior to becoming a firefighter:

Celtruda quietly listened as Judge Kevin McMahon discussed his record, which includes an arrest for harassment in Waterford and a driving under the influence charge. (source)

Given, Celtruda was not a felon before he became a firefighter. His convictions were less than that of a felon. However, the damage he did is still effecting the Mystic Fire District.

I just found this story to be interesting while I was in town at the same time that the thread on Firefighter Nation is going strong.

Top Ten Marketing Tools for Fire/EMS Blogs and Websites

Today, I would like to delve into the top ten tools that webmasters and bloggers can do to market their blog or website. For obvious reasons, websites and blogs want readers. This Top Ten list assumes that you are writing stuff that your audience wants to read, if not try working on that first then revisit my list. Trust me, there are so many more things you can do, some simple and others more difficult to better market your site but these are my top ten. Feel free to leave a comment if you have a question or email me.

Fire Critic side note: this list was created for fire and EMS blogs, however it can be used by just about any webmaster or blogger.

10. A sig (Signature file). A sig file is added to the end of EVERY email you send. Don’t be shy, but be concise. Add your website name, url, and maybe even the banner, but not much more. I have seen signatures that trail on into infinity. I don’t want to see the abbreviation of every credential, certificate, and degree you have in your signature…Nobody cares. If you are important, let other people make that determination on their own. Various email clients offer different ways of adding this. I have yet to do it for my email I use for this site, but do as I say not as I do.

9. Name drop. Whenever possible, talk about other bloggers, blogs, websites, authors and be sure to hyperlink to their site or article you are referring to. You would be surprised at how many people search for certain peoples names. You can get traffic from people searching for those people and your site coming up on the search pages! Trust me. You would not believe how many people come to my site because I spoke about guys like Ray McCormack, Dave Iannone, and Bobby Halton (see I just did it again!). Of course adding in a name like Megan Fox, Pamela Anderson, or Michael Jackson doesn’t hurt either!

8. Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Make every attempt to get every hit you can out of everything you write. This includes the internal code. For example, go to the top line of the browser at firehouse.com (name drop) and look at all the shit they have on there. I guarantee that if you search for any of those terms, they will be in the top of searches. There is a lot more to SEO, but we will start out small.

7. Post on Forums. You can get a lot of traffic by posting on forums. Utilize a name that is very close if not the same to your website/blog. Be sure to offer your link in your profile AND your signature on the forums so people can click right over to your site. However, do not be an ass on the forums…keep that for the lonely guys who post like idiots on The Watchdesk (name drop).

6. Reciprocal Links. Offer and ask for reciprocal links. Whenever someone links to you, link back to them. Whenever you ask for someone to link to your site be sure you have already linked to them. Don’t be a link whore though. If someone wants you to link to their carpetmunching website don’t unless you are running another carpetmunching website.

5. Comment on other blogs. One huge benefit of running a blog is offering the ability for readers to comment. Those comment will create CON-VER-SA-TION and keep readers coming back to read and re-comment. When you read another blog, leave a comment! Trust me, this works. Readers see it and blog authors see it and will visit your site. ALWAYS give your name or PSEUDONYM (like Fire Critic) and a link to your url when prompted. Be sure to offer the ability for readers to be notified when someone leaves a comment after them (I recently added this ability to the Fire Critic Blog).

4. Network. Network using sites like Facebook, Twitter, Firefighter Nation, Jems Connect, LinkedIn, and even Myspace if you are still a teenager. Use these sites to their utmost. With the advent of Mafia Wars and other games like that people are spending more and more time on these sites. Be sure to include your RSS feed so that people can get to your content from these sites! Twitter has become a great tool in networking too! You can even use your twitter account to update your facebook updates now.

3. RSS Feed. You must have an RSS Feed available if you are blogging. More importantly, offer the ability for readers to receive your feed via email. Try Google Feedburner.

2. Create an Image. Create an image for your site. Be sure to have your site name and/or url in the image. The image should easily identify your site much like the scary (boo) skull and fire shroud I picked! Either create one, buy one, or have someone make you one. Be sure to make a banner for your site as well and offer it in various sizes. One more better step is offer the code so that other sites can post your banner without hosting the image themselves. You can view the Fire Critic’s logo and banners here.

1. Get your own domain. Do not settle for a domain that ends in .wordpress.com or .blogspot.com people will never remember your url and might give up thinking about it. Instead of having that trailing url, spend the $10 a year and get your own. You can create a forward to the .blogspot.com url easily. Ultimately, you should get your own domain url AND hosting. This opens so many more options to you as a blogger/webmaster.

Court rules for white firefighters over promotions

I have only followed this story a little bit and it was given more publicity once Sonia Sotomayor was plucked for the high court.

The Supreme Court has ruled that white firefighters in New Haven, Conn., were unfairly denied promotions because of their race, reversing a decision that high court nominee Sonia Sotomayor endorsed as an appeals court judge.

Read the story on the Washington Post here. You can also follow the story and comments on Firefighter Nation here.

Basically, New Haven threw out a promotional test because they FEARED litigation over no African-American firefighters and only two Hispanic Firefighters were eligible for promotion once testing was completed. WHAT? For fear?

Is that what we have stooped to?

In the end, it bit New Haven in the ASS. Frank Ricci, the lead plaintiff, should be commended for standing up for what is right! I will drink to that…off duty. Too many firefighters/EMT’s fail to stand up for themselves for fear of retaliation. I have seen it in my department and heard of it everywhere else. This should prove fruitful for those who are scared to do the right thing.

“Fear of litigation alone cannot justify an employer’s reliance on race to the detriment of individuals who passed the examinations and qualified for promotions,” Justice Anthony Kennedy said in his opinion for the court. He was joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Samuel Alito, Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think every promotional process is fair and equitable. Most employers have their own way of twisting the process to get the guys they want.

I figure the easiest way is to come up with a fair testing process including practical, written, oral, and scenario based testing depending on the rank being tested; test and score fairly; then simply promote right down the list.

Here’s to you Frank…if we meet up in the future I will buy the first round!
