Gearing up for the Firehouse Expo 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb

Where have I been? Busy just like everyone else…

Actually, I am working on a huge project with a business partner of mine…more on that in the future!

I am gearing up for Firehouse Expo 2011

Firefighter Netcast will once again be pitching our tent in the FireGeezer/Statter911 booth at Firehouse Expo.

The booth number is 743 and FireGeezer has details on how to get free passes to the Exhibit hall! (click here for the info )

I will be travelling up with Willie Wines Jr. and another firefighter from our area Captain Kevin Totten. To be quite honest, it is going to be kinda humerous. Willie and Kevin will be riding to Richmond with me and my 2 children. I am dropping the kiddos off at the inlaws and then we are either staying the night in Richmond or DC…not sure which town we are going to tear up yet.

This photo is from the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb web site. It did not credit a photographer.

So the Firefighter Netcast thing will be fun as always…but the real event is…

The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at Firehouse Expo

Find all the information you need for the events here

The direct link for the Firehouse Expo stair climb is here

The event will be held at the Hilton on Thursday July 21, 2011 from 2-4pm.

From what I hear, there are only 100 participants signed up for it to date. Trust me, if Willie and I can do it anyone can. That being said, we aren’t sure if Willie and I can do it yet. This is our first one. They are also setting one up for Fire Rescue International and Willie and I will be there. We are contimplating doing that one and another on September 11th. There is one in Richmond, VA on September 11th and there is rumor of one in Roanoke that same date. We should be at one of them.

If you think you will be walking too slow for everyone else…WE NEED YOU. I mean WILLIE AND I NEED YOU. That way, we can blame you and you can blame us for dragging ass up those stairs. But in the end we can all say we did it. We did it to “NEVER FORGET”.

Afterwards Willie and I will be at a Bar!

What more do you need? Willie was damn near on his death bed the other week (with a cold) and he is doing it. He still complains every time I talk to him about his little bout with a runny nose. Hell, even the Buckaroo told him to suck it up and grow a set!

It has been a while since we travelled together and we are adding Kevin and another friend of mine to the mix. Hell soon we will be travelling in packs!

I will leave you with a video I shot in Downtown Roanoke the other week when I was on a date with my beautiful bride! At the drums is Lt. Mike Ellston from Salem Fire-Rescue Department (the same dept. as Totten)…He is banging the drums with a contingent of the Virginia Highlands Pipes and Drums at Flannery’s Irish Pub downtown.

Ellston is at least part (I think) of the brain behind  the 2 House blog…you can read it here!

Firefighter Netcast Celebrates 100th Show Live Thursday Night!

Thursday May 5th, John and I will celebrate our 100th show on Firefighter Netcast live at 9pm.

The direct link to the show is here

What is Firefighter Netcast?

Firefighter Netcast is the leading edge in podcasting and live netcasts for the fire service today. When we began in January 2010, there was one other show “Burning it Down” run by the guys behind The Bravest Online. Unfortunately they closed the door on their live podcast and left us all alone…until recently.

Nowadays there are other options for live fire service podcasting…but lets be clear that we are often imitated but never duplicated!

While we still have a lot to learn, we have continued to broaden our reach, fine tune our delivery, and offer the best fire service podcasting available.

You might ask why you can’t listen in every night to Firefighter Netcast…the answer is because these things take time. Our hosts have to create the shows and the content has to be rich. If we were running shows every night, our content would be watered down and we would begin repeating ourselves. In addition to all of that, we have families and careers.

Firefighter Netcast - FacebookTwitterItunes - Blog Talk Radio

Who is Firefighter Netcast?

Firefighter Netcast is comprised of many hosts (and a couple more to be added soon). Firefighter Netcast is run by John Mitchell and myself.

Our shows and hosts include:

We will be joined very shortly with host Doug Cline as well.

I would also be remiss if I didn’t mention the tremendous assistance that Willie Wines Jr. has been to Firefighter Netcast. He has helped us out so much and we are very grateful!

We have also done work for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation at Conferences and the NFFF Memorial Weekend. We produce FireHero Radio for the NFFF as well.

But the most important aspect of Who we are is our listeners! We enjoy the live listeners who chat in the chatroom as well as the majority of our listeners who catch up with us on our web site, facebook, twitter, and most importantly itunes!

I must say that I have had a blast since January 2010 when we got started. I have enjoyed all of the people I have met, the ones I have yet to meet, and the places I have been!

In case anyone is counting, we HAVE had more than 100 podcasts, but this is our 100th live netcast! In addition to the live netcasts, we have recorded dozens of other shows at conferences and other places!

Thanks for making Firefighter Netcast the BEST fire service podcast!

Thanks for the memories!

The Fire Critic’s Guide to FDIC 2011

I consider FDIC 2010 the beginning for me. The realization of the bigger picture. I had worked too long and too hard locally only to find out that wasn’t the focus I should have been spending my time on. In short, I got a rude awakening…a very rude one. However, I am gracious for it. I am actually a better person because of it in too many ways not to realize that it was for the greater good.

And so here I am now…heading to FDIC 2011 a year after the beginning. Wow…this past year has been a blast! Be sure to connect with me at FDIC 2011 if you plan on attending!

Below are just some of the events going on this year at FDIC. I have them listed on the specific days and at the end are events which are open during exhibit hall hours. For a list of the official FDIC events look here.

Firefighter Suicides…Prevention and Counseling

Updated: Here is a great article from BackwardsandStupid.com on Depression in his own words and experiences. Check out how he has learned and copes with depression.

Recently, 4 firefighter suicides in the Phoenix Fire Department have raised eyebrows. The need for counseling and prevention are real and have been identified.

Firefighter Netcast recently had Jeff Dill on a show about a Battalion Chief from suburban Chicago, who holds a Masters Degree in Counseling.  Chief Dill has established CSSF, Counseling Services for Firefighters, which offers behavioral health support to firefighters; trains senior fire officers, and educates clinicians on the benefits of understanding the life and emotions- of firefighters. Visit the CSSF here - CSFF Web Page and on Facebook.

This is a topic that needs to be discussed. Listen to the podcast and watch the video. You never know, someone you know might be exhibiting signs and be in need of help right now.

You can listen to the podcast from Firefighter Netcast right here.

If you are in need of immediate assistance, the contact information for the CSSF is here.

Below is a video about the steps that the Phoenix FD has taken to assist firefighters in preventing suicide.

Gearing up for FDIC…The Fire Critic Offers Social Media Training

I will be teaching a class on Social Media for the Fire Service at FDIC this year. I am excited for my first teaching engagement in a venue as large as FDIC…does it get any bigger? I have many friends teaching at FDIC as well. I will write about their classes in the near future.

The class is titled “Social Media: The Fire Service’s Next Big Innovation

Thursday, March 24, 2011
1:30 PM-3:15 PM
Room 134-135

Here is the teaser:

Social Media: The Fire Service’s Next Big Innovation
Lieutenant Rhett Fleitz, Roanoke (VA) Fire-EMS Department
Learn the “in’s and out’s” of social media for the fire service. Many questions about these media (blogs, twitter, facebook, MySpace, YouTube, skype, podcasting, text messaging, and so on) will be answered. Learn to be proactive by developing a social media standard operating procedure. Become acquainted with some of the ways departments are using these media for recruitment, retention, informing journalists and citizens, and publishing news. The benefits and potential consequences for personal use of these media by employees are also discussed. ALL LEVELS

Although that teaser only scratches the surface of the information I will share!

Who should attend? Anyone interested in social media, blogging, and branding their department online. Administrators who want to learn about social media, get examples of social media policies, as well as firefighters who want to brand their companies and departments. There will be information for all levels!

I am still working on the presentation. Since social media changes every day and new ideas, tools, and applications are created every day this is an ongoing project.

If you have a social media policy you would like to share or think your Fire Department excels in the use of social media please contact me. I am always looking for examples to share.

I will also be at the Fire Rescue Magazine booth 4244 set up with Firefighter Netcast. John and I will be recording live netcasts while we are there similarly to last year!

I don’t know what else I will get into while at FDIC, but I am certain that we will have fun! Willie Wines Jr. (IronFiremen.com) will be travelling with me once again!

John and I had a blast with FDIC last year. The event was the first major show for Firefighter Netcast. Since then, we have recorded almost 100 shows. We don’t have a solid schedule yet, but we are expecting to record some podcasts for Tiger Schmittendorf, Chris Naum, Doug Cline, Billy Hayes, Dave Statter for FireHero Radio, and much more.

Below are some of the shows we recorded at FDIC 2010:

  • Chief Ron Siarnicki- National Fallen Firefighters Foundation – This special NetCast was taped live on Friday, April 23, from the floor at FDIC 2010 in Indianapolis. Firefighter NetCast is very excited to have a chance to present Chief Ron Siarnicki to our audience.
  • EMS Two Dot Oh – On Friday, April 23, Firefighter NetCast had a visit from a couple of leaders in the concept of EMS 2.0. Justin Schorr is an urban firefighter/paramedic in San Francisco and hosts The Happy Medic. Accompanying Justin is Chris Kaiser, a rural firefighter/paramedic in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin.
  • Firefighter Storytime! Chief Tom Merrill, Snyder (NY) Fire Dept. – From the floor of FDIC 2010 on Saturday, April 24, our final NetCast from the exhibit floor featured two special guests from Erie County, New York. We began our series “Firefighter Storytellers” with author, presenter, instructor, emergency manager and leader in the emergency services community Tiger Schmittendorf.
  • From Blue Shirt to Bugle – The Most Difficult Transition in Your Career - This show featuring Billy Goldfeder and Ray Gayk was originally aired as a live netcast from the exhibit floor of FDIC. John and Rhett enjoy discussion about what to do and what not to do when you get promoted. This is great training for you or your company. Listen in at the firehouse!
  • Challenges on the Modern Fireground – We were eager to turn over one of our shows to the fine folks from FireRescue Magazine, who graciously hosted Firefighter NetCast at their booth along with Firefighter Nation at FDIC.  Without their assistance, our live programming from the exhibit hall would not have been possible.
  • Changes in Building Construction and Fire Behavior – John and Rhett are joined with Chris Naum to discuss Changes in Building Construction and Fire Behavior. Chris is a a fire service leader in the field of building construction and fire behavior. Chris addresses the need to re-visit these core subject areas to bring us up to speed with the many changes facing us today.
  • Distribution of Photos and Videos Taken by Firefighters at Work – John and Rhett discuss legal issues surrounding photographs and videos taken while on duty with Fred Simon. Some of the information will astound you about who owns the material!

I will also be teaching the same class at Kean University in New Jersey (dates below):

Wednesday, April 20, 2011 - Somerset County Emergency Services Training Academy
402 Roycefield Rd Hillsborough, NJ 08844

Thursday, April 21, 2011 - Middlesex County Fire Academy
1001 Fire Academy Dr Sayreville, NJ 08872

These will be more in depth 5+ hour classes on social media in the fire service. For more information check out KeanFireSafety.com. However, I don’t believe the classes are posted yet.

Join Tiger Schmittendorf live tonight on Firefighter Storytellers on Firefighter Netcast.

Visit Firefighter Netcast online here

The direct link for the show is here

If you have never listened in to a show on Firefighter Netcast you should check it out! You can even call in and share your stories!

Tiger’s guest will be retired Lt. Patrick Coghlan from the Buffalo Fire Department.  Pat is a 34-year veteran of Rescue One and Vice President of the Buffalo Fire Historical Society. More than that, Patty is a real character with a bit of a crusty exterior — but when you peel that away — you find a big guy with an even bigger heart and a very special fondness for telling stories and preserving the rich history of the fire service.

Video Coverage: Northern California Mall, Roseville Galleria Burns

Firefighter Nation has the story of the Roseville Galleria Fire in Northern California here.

City officials said part of the roof on the mall’s south end collapsed as huge clouds of black smoke poured from the 1.3 million-square-foot Roseville Galleria, which is about 17 miles east of the state capital.

A supposed armed man had barricaded himself in the mall and set the place on fire.

We will be discussing the dilemma. We will also be joined by Cheif Reason Art Goodrich of ChiefReasonArt.com and fellow podcaster on Firefighter Netcast who hosts his own show The Voice of Reason.

The Fire Critic Reinvigorated with great content, videos, and topics for firefighters

Over the past several years, I have created several web sites. The Fire Critic has remained one of my favorites.

The past several weeks has brought clarity to its purpose. In an effort to move the site forward, I have decided to update more often with videos, articles, and whatever else is new or interesting in the fire service.

What this means to you is that you will have to check back more often to see what is new and/or scroll down further to see what you have missed!

I have also been working to maximize the potential of the twitter account (@firecritic) and facebook page of the site. As always, you can friend request me as well here.

FireCritic – Twitter @firecriticFacebook

Interestingly enough, today’s Monday Morning Shoutout here at The Fire Critic goes to ChicagoFD.org. I checked the site out when I found some great videos on youtube from them. The interesting thing about it is that Mike Ward over at Fire Geezer wrote a detailed article on Chicago: Remembering those lost in Chicago: 21 dead at Union Stock Yards in 1910 and 9 dead at Hubbard Street in 1961. Check it out, it is a good read!

This past weekend, I have been stuck at my house trying to pass a kidney stone which my friend Captain Wines so eloquently wrote about here on Ironfiremen.com. Prior to that was the epic anti-climactic “Rhett said” vs. “Dave said” between Dave Statter and I over the events in Obion County Tennessee (Fire Critic links here, here, and here & Statter links here, here, here and here).

Of course, if you weren’t able to catch the live netcast of the discussion on Obion County, be sure to check it out below!

Listen to the netcast right here!

Videos -Videos – Videos

I also posted several decent videos, as did Dave Statter on numerous fires this past weekend. Here is a link to an article with most of them here.

“VACANT” vs. “UNOCCUPIED”

Firefighter Behavior has a decent look at whether or not Vacant Structures are actually Vacant unless we say they are. I have been trying to explain this for a long time. There is a difference between “VACANT” & “UNOCCUPIED”.

In my opinion, vacant simply means no one resides there on a regular basis (i.e. homeowner or renter). Vacant structures can still have people in them. Whether it is squatters or kids playing around, vacant structures can be “OCCUPIED”. The only way to rule out a structure being occupied is by doing a thorough search. Read the story of a child who died in a VACANT, but OCCUPIED structure and why Backstep Firefighter is asking the question When Did It Become Okay To Say ‘No’? They also followed up recently with this post: Why We Search: Baltimore

Have you ever left a coffee mug on the tailboard?

One more thing… FireGeezer has finally come up with a coffee mug that might withstand you leaving it on the tailboard and forgetting about it when you get a call. The new travel mug is available, you can check it out here!

Netcasting at FRI…The Voice of Reason with Sean Garrity from Rescue Me, Firefighter Netcast, and in Introduction to FireHero Radio

Last week, John Mitchell and I met up in Chicago for Fire Rescue International. I was accompanied by my good friend Willie Wines Jr. (IronFiremen.com) and we enjoyed a good bit of room in the Fire Rescue Magazine booth.

First of all, we had a blast. We were able to run into a bunch of great friends and meet plenty of new ones.

While we were there we had many things to accomplish:

  • Record podcasts for Fire Rescue Magazine Editor-In-Chief Tim Sendelbach and many great guests.
  • Record the first of many FireHero Radio sessions for the National Fallen Firefighter Foundation with Dave Statter.
  • Record a “The Voice of Reason” show with host Art Goodrich and guests Rob Schnepp and Steven Pasquale (plays Sean Garrity on Rescue Me).
  • Record several other podcasts/netcasts for The Firefighter Netcast Show.

Amazingly enough, we were able to accomplish all of them. Unfortunately for us, we had many technical issues we had to overcome. Lessons have been learned and we will be more efficient next time.

The first of our shows was The Voice of Reason featuring Art Goodrich, Rob Schnepp, and Steven Pasquale. Steven plays firefighter Sean Garrity on Rescue Me. You can listen to their show right here from Firefighter Netcast or you can watch it on Youtube below. This is the first videocast that Firefighter Netcast has produced.

Read more about the show at ChiefReasonArt.com.

Many thanks to all who made that happen.

We were also able to record two shows including 3 interviews for FireHero Radio. FireHero Radio is a new project we are working on with Dave Statter for the National Fallen Firefighter Foundation. Listen to them below.

Art Goodrich, Rob Schnepp, Steven Pasquale, John Mitchell, and Rhett Fleitz

As for The Firefighter Netcast Show, we were able to record a short interview with Motorola on their new radio the APX 7000XE. We will have that online soon.

We also planned a post show recap of what the went on at Fire Rescue International. That didn’t quite work out the way we planned due to more technical difficulty. However, we were able to have Dave Statter and his wife Hillary Howard on the show to discuss the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial. You can listen to that right here.

The FireRescue Magazine podcasts will be available by the beginning of the week hopefully.

We had a blast hanging out with everyone. More to come in the future!

Firefighter Netcast at Fire Rescue International

I had all these plans….

We will be rolling out some audio today. However, things just haven’t gone quite as planned. Luckily for us, we are back on track.

Yesterday at FRI we were busy. As luck would have it our entire system was down for recording first thing in the morning. We have a secondary “remote” set up however, and we put it to use. Our Zoom h4n came in very handy. It would have been a lot more handy if we didn’t then let human error in to ruin our first couple of podcasts. They are salvageable and we will be working to remedy that first thing this morning.

John and I learned early on that you have to roll with the punches, learn from our mistakes, and always have a backup plan.

The day wasn’t an entire spoil though. We did have fun!

We were able to record about 10 individual podcasts. Many were produced for Tim Sendlebach and his crew at Fire Rescue Magazine. A couple others for Dave Statter and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

The audio for the NFFF will be available later on Firefighter Netcast.

Art Goodrich was able to record a couple as well. He actually got to interview Rob Schnepp (Cyanokit) and Steven Pasquale. You might know Steven from his roll as “White Sean” or Sean Garrity on Rescue me.

Sean was a blast to talk to, and Art got to shoot the shit with him for a while after the interview.

All of that audio will be available later.

Here are some photos from the day. We have Willie Wines Jr. (IronFiremen.com) helping us out and he has been a huge help. He has been snapping the photos.

Be there at 9pm EST.

Firehouse Expo 2010 Podcasting from the Exhibit Floor

John and I (Firefighter Netcast) have been busy recording podcasts at Firehouse Expo.

You can listen to our first available podcast with Robbie and Danny Owens here!

Robbie is a master firefighter for the Henrico County (VA) Division of Fire. Danny is a firefighter for the Richmond (VA) Department of Emergency Services. Together they run the Average Jake Firefighter Blog.

They are fans of Firefighter Netcast and we have had Robbie as a caller on several of our shows. These two brothers are great guys all around and students of all things related to new and improved firefighter tactics.

We had a blast interviewing the following today:

We have plenty of audio for you in the following days.

Enjoy these pictures as well!

Experience Firehouse Expo 2010

Firehouse Expo has been a blast so far.
John and I have recorded some great audio for Firefighter Netcast. We have been inviting various guests into our area within the FireGeezer/STATter911 booth for short interviews. The guests are usually on for 5-15 minutes.
Some of our guests have included:

We will be posting audio as soon as possible. We have a bunch to edit and then we will get it online. The internet connections we are finding are less than ideal.
We have a lot of thanks to give to Bill Schumm and Mike Ward of FireGeezer and Dave Statter as well. They have been more than gracious sharing their space. They have also been sending us some great guests!

Fire Critic and More at Firehouse Expo… Will you be there?

I will be at Firehouse Expo next week. John Mitchell and I will be hanging out together for more hi-jinx, fun, and humor intended to make one of us cry! Be sure to let us know if you will be there and we will catch up!

I will be there in the official capacity as co-host of Firefighter Netcast. However, if you follow me because of one of the other sites I run like VAFireNews.com be sure to catch up with me!

We will be hanging out with Dave Statter, Bill Schumm (FireGeezer), and Mike Ward (Fossil Medic) among others!

We probably won’t be doing any live netcasting. The only exception is we will be debuting Christopher Naum’s “Taking It To The Streets” live on July 21st at 9pm EST. The show’s topic will be “What’s on YOUR Radar Screen”?

Chris has become a great friend to not only John and I but also to Firefighter Netcast. His ability to teach and share his expertise in command safety and company officer development were a huge draw in getting him a show on Firefighter Netcast!

I plan on taking a lot of pictures at Firehouse Expo. I also plan on posting here at Fire Critic a good bit. Be sure to leave a comment if you want to meet up!

Naum's new show "Taking It To The Streets" as seen here in Times Square!!!

Firefighter Netcast is live tonight introducing “The Voice of Reason”. The new show is hosted by Art Goodrich and produced by the crew at Firefighter Netcast. Tune in and see what all the hoopla is about! (link)

Firefighter Netcast has continued to rock the Fire Service world by offering live netcasts and podcasts that matter. The revolution and move to online audio is real and they do it better than many of the industry leaders! So what if my view is a little biased, I am merely pointing out what many are saying!

Another great audio show of note is coming back! Burnin it Down, produced by Chris David over at The Bravest Online has stated that he will be bringing the show back online. We do not have a secure date yet though.

The Fire PIO has an excellent video. In my own words, it explains why if you don’t think Social Media matters you should get your head out of your ass! (link)

If you haven’t seen it yet, you are missing it… Dave Statter has excellent footage of two houses off in Detroit. The total was 7 houses in an hour set by 5 teenagers who confessed. The two videos in this post offer proof of great firefighters up in Detroit! (link)

Chief Billy Goldfeder has a very unfortunate story of how idiotic some people can be when it comes to funding. Apparently libraries are more important than the public’s safety….This is definitely a FAIL for Westport! (link)

Life Under the Lights has an excellent series of posts for EMS Week. (link)

Unfortunately, I missed any and all coverage of the live meetups last night for EMS Week. When I say I missed it, I was not able to go and I also thought it was tonight. If you made it, send some pics and I will run them. Links are also welcome!

If you have not seen Paul Comb’s blog over at FireEngineering.com you should! Paul is amazing with his illustrations. In truth, he writes an entire story with one still illustration. The points he makes are worthwhile and stimulate conversation! Check out his blog here.
