Best of the Rest – ESS Review, VES Helmet Cam, Terrible FF & Leader?, Promotions, and My New Thinking Cap

Right now is the busiest time of the year for me. It starts when Lacrosse season begins (I am the coach of a team of 23 U11 players). I do it because they don’t have enough coaches and because my son plays. I don’t even have an assistant coach. I am not the best coach in the World, but I think I get the job done.

On top of that, FDIC was just held in Indianapolis. Last year, FDIC was a blast and when I got back I felt as though I was stuck under a heap of work…that heap never let up. I have the same issue this year, and again I never dug myself out of the work last year.

I am managing though. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Currently, we are behind on about 8 reviews over at FireProductReview.com. The ESS Eye Pro review is complete and can be seen here. The 1st in Leather review will be up later today.

Keep me informed of what is going on. I try to keep up, but it isn’t happening. If you want information shared on “Best of the Rest”, email me or contact me another way.

The video below is VES Helmet Cam video out of Colorado Springs, CO. More info on it here: IronsandLadders.com offers a view and commentary on a Vent-Enter-Search (VES) Video in the latest post. Read it here.

Best of the Rest – Nathan’s Christmas, Call for Photos, Reasons, Good Enough?, and Much More!

Life has been busy the past week. I took 2/3 of the cyle off for Thanksgiving…It is nice to have seniority (although I am working Christmas day). I also took off from FireCritic.com and didn’t even fire up the computer for 3 days. Thanks to my new iphone I can do a lot mobile. It is refreshing after my droid x that hardly even worked anymore.

Here is a very short but sweet Best of the Rest!

First a note about the photo albums on FireCritic.com:

The photo albums on FireCritic.com have been a huge hit. To be included, all you have to do is send your pictures (and info if you want) to firecritic@firecritic.com. You can send any photos you would like relating to fire and/or EMS. Specifically, pictures of firefighter kids, license plates, crews, firehouses, rigs, helmets, random pics, custom kitchen tables, and holiday photos. I run the photo articles once I have enough pictures in the categories.

Engine 802 & Tanker 804 at a chicken house fire on 11/24/12 took a county wide page and mutual aid from another county $800k loss. took 5hrs to contain it. Luckily no chickens were there at the time. Cause of fire was a pressure washer exploding. No injuries. This was in Hickory Valley in White County, TN. It took a county wide page of ten districts and mutual aid from Van Burean County for tanker support. Shared by Zach Brock.

Firehouse Expo – Meet up with Willie and Me with MN8 FoxFire

Firehouse Expo

Willie and I head out for Baltimore and Firehouse Expo on Wednesday. I have to pull half a shift and then we will be there. Booth #123 is where you can find us. That will be the home of the MN8 FoxFire team including Willie and I. Zach Green has been busy traversing the Nation spreading the word on MN8′s illuminating products. If you have never seen this stuff in person or been in the booth with Willie and I are there, make it a point to stop by. Unfortunately, we will only be there Thursday and Friday. I have to be home for an event Saturday.

Firehouse Expo FOOLS Bash

We will be at the FOOLS Bash on Thursday night with the Firehouse Dolls models and plenty of FOOLS from all over. The event is being hosted by the Central Maryland FOOLS and Northern Virginia FOOLS. Wear your lid if you can. I will be there in a kilt and lid.

Don’t be shy…introduce yourself and Willie will buy you a beer!

The FOOLS Bash starts at 3pm and includes a cornhole tournament and dunk tank. The bash is at Powerplant Live at Baltimore Inner Harbor. Cups (for the golden beverages) are $10 at the FOOLS Expo Booth at Firehouse Expo or $15 at the gates to Powerplant live. More info here. The event is raising funds for the Metro Firefighters Burn Fund.

Firehouse Expo 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb

There will be a stair climb event at Firehouse Expo on Thursday. Sign up and climb, or sign up to support FDNY programs and let someone else carry one of the 343. Make sure you sign up here. I will not be able to climb this year.

Green Building Construction For The Fire Service

John Shafer is teaching at Firehouse Expo. Friday, room 343 at noon. Be there. More information here.

Geezer and Statter at Expo

See FireGeezer, Dave Statter, and more will be in booth #743 at Firehouse Expo. Dave is already crying the blues that I won’t be in his booth this year (read here). He apparently isn’t good at attracting crowds.

Best of the Rest – Hero Rush, FDIC, Quick Drills, and More!

I am gearing up for FDIC as many of my friends are as well. This year, Willie and I will be traveling with Mike Elston (Salem FD), and Andrew Catron (Kingsport FD). We look forward to many of the events. I will be posting our itinerary soon to let you all know where we will be.

My wife and I are planning on doing the Hero Rush in Maryland on April 28th. We just need to solidify someone to watch our children. We have a wedding to attend that evening in Norther Virginia as well.

Hopefully, Willie and I will have the patches and challenge coins by FDIC. The patches should be here later this week. We will let you know how to get yours soon! The patches were made by NM Coin LLC.

The pic on the right is our new patch!

This weeks “Best of the Rest” is a little short. Today, I decided to ride my bike (as in bicycle) to the gym and back. Did I mention it was “leg” day at the gym which is about an 8 mile ride one way. It was fun though!

Now, on to a more serious topic. One of the biggest reasons I am looking forward to being at FDIC, the 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb. You can also follow along and connect with The Fire Critic via Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and Youtube.

As seen on FailBlog.com

Addison Fire Protection District – Can this be real? FailBlog.com has this photo of the message board at Addison Fire Protection District Station #3. The message “Better to arrive late than never”..WTF? Who approved this? Maybe the Chief’s message was directed to firefighters and should have read “Better to arrive safe than never”…or maybe it is meant as a message to the citizens and should have been “Call 911 and we will get there whenever we can”.

Firehouse Zen- Chief Mick Mayers continues to lay it down in his writings that occasionally have me seeking dictionary.com for a definition. Don’t let that dissuade you from reading though. He offers some great insight to the fire service. Check out: OKAY, IT’S 2012: NOW WHAT? and 2012: “WHAT IF?”.

Statter911.com – Dave offers a video of a house fire in Maryland. This is video posted yesterday of a December 23 fire in Upper Marlboro, Maryland (Prince George’s County) Raw Video: PGFD House Fire in Upper Marlboro. Switch to Defensive Operations

911 Memorial Stairclimbs – The majority of the stair climb events are now affiliated with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. One of the original climbs is a bit smaller scale and has a local feel. The Albequrque Stair Climb started in 2003. Read more about it here. If you are looking for a stair climb event check out http://www.9-11stairclimb.com/

Here is a lost photo I just found. This is a picture of Willie and I immediately after climbing 110 floors in Atlanta at FRI for the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb.

FireGeezer.com - A FIRE LATE SUNDAY NIGHT in a downtown brothel in Mitchell, Australia, is still deemed suspicious by the fire investigators.  The Canberra area business was closed for New Year’s Day, as all the city’s brothels were when smoke was discovered coming from The Gentlemen’s Club on Grimwade Street around 11 pm. http://firegeezer.com/2012/01/02/brothel-fire-suspicious/

The Colorado Firefighter Facebook Page - This page continues to impress me on the sharing of links and information. Check them out here and click “like”!

ELAFFHQ.com – Their latest post “Raise money for a good cause, and get a chance to win a leather helmet” is just that…a chance to win a Phenix Leather Helmet. The chances are $1 a piece and the helmet will be given away once they reach $1000 for the National Firefighters Endowment. Click here to go directly to the donation page. They are currently 1/4 of the way to their goal! The Fire Critic gave $50…If I win the helmet I will give it away to pay it forward!

Fire Service Warrior – This site continues to impress me. The latest post “Brotherhood Insurance: A Pay for What You Get Policy” by Brother Brian Brush is a great post on the Brotherhood of the Fire Service and a must read!

IronFiremen.com – America’s Fire Captain Willie Wines Jr. outdoes everyone on his End of Year Review for 2011. Even though this post probably took three weeks for his little fingers to type, it is well worth a read. See what he has accomplished this past year!

Firefighter Nation – They have the story and the video of a huge fire at a former Illinois factory here.

Happy Medic – The Happy Medic is handing out his “Best of 2011″ awards. Check them out here!

IronsandLadders.com – This blog is great on content. Their latest post “Thru-The-Lock Time Trial (storefront doors)” is just one of many great training videos available.

Brotherhood Instructors – One of the leading privately owned and operated by firefighters instructing team offers “Forcing Doors in Zero Visibility – By Andrew Brassard” Check it out and continue your learning!

I love sushi and I love wasabi. I understand the use of wasabi and how it enhances the flavor with a little spice. I would never eat a spoonful of wasabi. I don’t think this next firefighter ever will…again! He might say this is a near death experience! Maybe this is the new cinnamon dragon challenge!

Crews battle flames and smoke at Westport Presbyterian Church

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

As dozens of onlookers packed Westport Road Thursday evening, all they could do is watch as Westport Presbyterian Church burned.

“We were out in Westport and my wife got a message on Facebook saying ‘Westport’s burning,’” Luke Rocha said.

Rocha, like many others, went down to see the flames shooting from the roof of the historic church that stood at Westport and 40th street for more than 100 years.

Top Ten Christmas Gifts for Firefighters 2011

The 2011 Christmas season is in full swing.

Willie Wines Jr. recently posted IronFiremen.com’s Top Ten Stocking Stuffers here. There are some great gift ideas on the list! While some of those items might have made it to this list, I decided not to duplicate in order to give you all some more options.

What a great start to buying for that significant firefighter in your life.

You can read the past years Top Ten Christmas Gifts lists:

This year will be no different. The best gifts for firefighters. Some of these are custom gifts and will require ordering…don’t worry they are worth the wait!

Here we go…

10. Ride Backwards Apparel

Ride Backwards is what it is all about. Apparel for the fit firefighter…or the one trying to get fit. If your firefighter is working towards being healthier or is already there, Ride Backwards gear is made for them. Let me be clear though…Ride Backwards isn’t just an apparel company, they are a community of like minded firefighters who train, exercise, and lead healthy lives. I can’t put my finger on exactly why I love this company, I have only met a couple of the people behind the company once. I just love following them on Facebook and keeping in touch with their fan base.

If you are trying to get fans on Facebook or build a community you should definitely be taking notes from them!

Check out their web site here. They have some great products!

9. Phenix Leather Helmet

I wish I could tell you mine fit great, but I haven’t received it yet. I have one on order, a gift from a friend (more on that later). Let me say that I have had one on my head and it felt awesome. I have had several leather helmets and as the times change, technology changes, regulations change the leather helmets have changed. Some of them have become very cumbersome. While I have not tested this helmet out, it felt very good to wear. One of the biggest things I liked about it is that it sits low on my head.

I cannot wait to have it in my hands! The picture to the right is mine in production.

Check out Phenix helmets online here.

8. Firefighter Calendar

Whether you are looking for a bunch of hot men or women firefighters we have you covered. You can view the hottest male firefighter calendars here and the hottest female firefighter calendars here. Most of these support a great cause and are organized by firefighters. Pick your poison and order a calendar for that special firefighter in your life. Better yet, order one for yourself too!

My personal favorite has to be the America’s Female Firefighters Calendar. Check out their site here and they are on Facebook as well.

7. Firefighter Apparel

I admit, some firefighting apparel is gaudy and over the top. If your firefighter is going to wear firefighting apparel they need to be wearing the right stuff. Trust me, there is plenty of stuff out their for different tastes.

I suggest you look at:

6. Leather Bunker Boots

Much like #1 on our list this year, too many firefighters are not provided leather bunker boots. It amazes me that departments waste their money on rubber boots. In my department, rubber boots merely take up space on the tops of our lockers. Although there are a few firefighters who still wear them because they don’t care about their feet enough to purchase leather boots on their own.

I cannot speak for all of the brands, but I will tell you that the Black Diamond X Boot, Black Diamond X2 Boot, and Lion Apparel Marshall boots (all links to product reviews) are great boots.

I also hear that the Globe leather boots and Haix leather boots are great boots.

You can buy the boots on TheFireStore.com

5. NFFF Merchandise

Supporting the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) is the right thing to do. They take care of our Fallen and their families. Purchasing, gifting, and wearing their merchandise supports their mission.

They have cups, mugs, challenge coins, picture frames, posters, books, stuffed animals, charms, and so much more!

Support the NFFF, they are supporting us!

Check them out online. Their store is here.

4. MN8 Foxfire Illuminating Gear

I have been a long time fan of the illuminating gear from MN8. I have done some product reviews on their stuff and use it on a regular basis. The thing about their products is that it isn’t another product, it is a better spin on a current product. Instead of simply having a helmet band, you can have one that illuminates. Instead of having grip tape on on a tool, you can have grip tape that illuminates. They also have epoxy grip that illuminates for tools. Soon, we they will be unveiling a brand new tetrahedron for firefighter use. I can’t say much more, but it is impressive.

Check out MN8 on Facebook as well. Another company creating a community around their products.

View their products on their web site. Purchase their products on TheFireStore.com.

3. Custom Leather Accessories

No not the Excessive Leather Accessories for Fire Fighters (ELAFFHQ.com), I am actually talking about custom leatherwork by firefighters for firefighters. Might I point you in the direction of Box Alarm Leather. They do everything from helmet shields to radio straps and can custom make just about anything. Check them out here.

There are plenty of other great custom leather companies as well:

2. Brotherhood Chips

You may not know it, but that special firefighter in your life is sure to read both FireCritic.com and IronFiremen.com.

They can now carry us with them wherever they go. Introducing the FireCritic/IronFiremen “Brotherhood Chip”. It is smaller and weighs less than the typical “challenge coin”, but serves the same purpose.

Challenge Coins are a long held tradition within the Military, Fire and Police Service. Now, your firefighter can have one from 2 of the Nation’s top Fire Service Bloggers!

We designed the chips with the words “Tradition”, “Honor”, “Pride”, “Respect” and “Brotherhood” on the edge. That is what we are about and is exactly what we are trying to spread.

Get more details and purchase yours by clicking  HERE .

We got our chips made by TheChipSite.com. Check them out!

1. Personal Rescue Escape System

Too few firefighters have these!

I do not own and am not issued a commercially made personal rescue escape system, bailout bag, or whatever you might call it. I do have a pretty decent set up that I can use as a search line or rescue rope/webbing for victims or other firefighters as well as a bailout system for myself.

Here is the thing…every firefighter should own and carry some sort of setup. Whether it is a commercially made system or a made up system of caribeeners and rope/webbing they should have it.

If their department is like mine and doesn’t care about this need in our job, you can step in and get it for your firefighter.

TheFireStore.com offers several different setups. Check them out.

Black Diamond Footwear X2 Firefighting Boots – Product Review

Black Diamond X2 Footwear X2 firefighting boots are by far a superb example of what leather fire boots should feel like and look like. These boots are well worth the investment. I have been wearing these boots for 4 months and I must say that I am impressed. Other firefighters have noticed them as well. Many are always asking about the reviews I am doing. They want to know about the decent products out there. The point is that these product reviews are paying off locally as well as globally with the reach of this blog.

You might remember I did a review of the Black Diamond X boot here and here. They took that design and made it even better.

These boots are beyond comfortable. I know that because not only have I been wearing them for 4 months, but I have fought some fire in them and even did a 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at Firehouse Expo in them.

Web Site - Facebook - Twitter - Youtube

The Black Diamond Footwear X Boot

I don’t take product reviews lightly. I take my time and do it right. My reputation as a reviewer is on the line each time I do a review. I want to make sure I hit the high points and the low points of each product. My intention was to do a video review of these boots but I just couldn’t pull it off.

My first impression of the X2 Boot…

The look – These boots are solid black. They look solid. Just look at the pictures. This is after 4 months of decent use.

The feel - Out of the box, these boots slipped right on. I did not have to wear them around to break them in. I put them right in my gear and got ready for business. They don’t hug your foot, and the 3-point heel locking system holds your foot in place and keeps your foot from slipping around inside. They slipped on and off very easily.

The toe -  The toe on these boots is probably one of the best I have seen yet. They have a molded rubber toe cap that has held up very well so far.

My X2 boots as they sit in my turnout gear.

Best feature – Much like the X boot I think the best feature is the integrated and reinforced pull on system. They also added a lip on the heel to assist in taking them off….great idea!

Worst feature – Made in China… the potential lower cost from outsourcing to China probably means more sales for those who don’t care about where a product is made…but for myself and many others that “Made in USA” might mean the difference between purchasing this boot and another which is made in the United States.

For all of the specifications of the X2 boot check out the spec sheet can here

Molded Rubber Toe Cap and Heel for High Abrasion and Ankle Support Guard Protection

Now for the serious stuff…

On the fireground – I caught a pretty decent fire wearing the X2 boot. I didn’t even notice I had them on. You can read about the fire here. I was on the nozzle (that doesn’t happen all the time). It was a hot fire, but then again I don’t know of any fires which aren’t hot. They got some use and were very comfortable.

Walking – I have done plenty of this wearing the boots. On every call for the past 4 months I have worn them. Most notably, I participated in the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at

The construction is solid on these boots.

Firehouse Expo wearing the X2 Boots and my full turnout gear. Willie Wines Jr. did the same. You can read about our climb here and here. We walked 110 stories in the X2 Boots and I never thought for a minute about my feet hurting because they did not. Those boots are that comfortable. There were other firefighters wearing running shoes and I cannot imagine their feet were any better off than mine.

Android Applications for the Fire & EMS Service

Last year, almost to the day, I published an article titled “ANDROID IN THE FIRE SERVICE“. I had several comments and then got another one today about applications that firefighters use on their android device. Why not the iphone you might ask? The answer is because I use the Droid X and previously used the Droid. I am also fairly certain that almost all of the applications on the Android network can also be phoned on the iphone network.

I use some of the applications below and others I will be checking out.

You might also check out Fully Involved Media. They have numerous applications for the Android network.

Here is the comment posted today on the post “ANDROID IN THE FIRE SERVICE“. Check out that link for other applications and even more in the comments section.

As always, feel free to add any other applications you use for Android or iphone in the comments!

The comment:

I am a Fire Fighter in the Green Bay, WI Area.  I use have found multiple free application that I have downloaded from the Android Market Place and use most regularly.

  1. CADPage – This is an excellent application if you receive text messages for calls from Dispatch.  You can customize it to your location.  When you get a Call, you can Click on the map it Icon & it will load it into the GPS.  Also, if your Fire Dept is using “I am Responding Software”, there is a preset button that you can hit that will make the call for you.
  2. Cargo Decoder - This is an ERG (Emergency Response Guide) this is the 2008 ERG
  3. Fire Alert - Another excellent application if you receive text messages for calls from Dispatch.  Unlike CADPage, you can Set Customized Alerts that can also change your phones volume(if you have your phone on Vibrate when you receive a fire call text, it will automatically turn you phone ringer on to your preset volume and the ringtone of your choice will play).
  4. Extricate - This is an application for Hybrid Vehicles.  It allows you to quickly determine where to make your cut during extrication.  This Application shows where the high voltage electrical lines are, seat-belt pretensioners, fuel, air bags & air Bags sensor and other great information.
  5. First Aid – Self Explanatory!!!
  6. Fire Chief - Great Publication for the latest news, Trends, Ideas on Management solutions & Leadership training.
  7. Fire Calculator - This is a great Friction Loss Calculator
  8. Scanner Buddy – Great Scanner for your Phone, it uses radio reference as its source.
  9. Medical Spanish Dictionary - A Spanish Dictionary to help get the beneficial Medical information to & from a Spanish speaking Person.
  10. Med Scape – From the makers of Web MD, here is an android version.
  11.  iTriage – This was created by two emergency room physicians.

Just Remember these are all currently free from the Android Market(like most applications, there are disclaimers so use your discretion one following some information given.).  I hope some of these help you as they have multiple people on the Hobart, WI Fire Dept.  Please feel free to respond with any questions.

What applications do you use?

Detroit EMS…Statistically Speaking…Units Were Available and Dispatched?

Six people were shot the other day in Detroit. One died, the other 5 were transported by police apparently.

FossilMedic reported this story on FireGeezer the other day here.

The story came out that no ambulances were available. Now, Detroit City Officials are saying that isn’t the case. The claims by City officials as reported in the linked news reports below would have some people feeling as though everything was copacetic and that the spin was created by the media. Those of us who work in EMS easily find holes in these accounts.

You be the judge…

“A third call came in to EMS at approximately 2:16 a.m., and it was dispatched at 2:23 … to the 12th Precinct,” Green said. “Three minutes into that call, the unit was called back.”

From The Detroit News: http://detnews.com/article/20110412/METRO01/104120359/Detroit-official-defends-EMS-response-in-multiple-shooting-incident#ixzz1JJPfWa62

This really doesn’t tell us anything… How long did it take to dispatch them? How long would it have taken for them to get there?

and

Deputy Mayor Saul Green said a 911 call came in at 2:16 a.m. and an ambulance was dispatched seven minutes later, but was called off after police transported the victims to a hospital.

From Detroit Free Press: http://www.freep.com/article/20110412/NEWS01/104120378/Response-Detroit-shooting-disputed?odyssey=mod|newswell|text|FRONTPAGE|s

Dispatched 7 minutes later? If units were available, shouldn’t they have been dispatched earlier? I don’t know how Detroit works, but 7 minutes is a LONG time from call to dispatch.

This entire situation smells fishy to me.

Detroit has been plagued with issues for a long time. Luckily for them and the victims, no other deaths occured due to the failed response. You just have to love the spin put on by officials when everything doesn’t come together…

Hey FireGeezer…Making Coffee in Afghanistan (Warning:Language)

Here is a video of soldiers making certain improvisations while making coffee in Afghanistan. Maybe FireGeezer should send them a Bunn-O-Matic!

Warning: Every other word is F$%K…hey they are soldiers, what do you expect?

If you are a firefighter, you will understand it clearly with the completely overused adjective!

News Flash: FireGeezer Blog is 4 Years Old…That is like 28 in Dog Years

Friend and notable blogger FireGeezer Bill Schumm has hit another milestone… his 4th year of blogging. In related news, Dave Statter cries because his blog is not as old as Bill’s…

FireGeezer came online on March 25, 2007 with a short article you can read here. A couple of days later, Bill introduces himself for the first time and explains the blog a little bit (read that here).

I have had the enjoyment of meeting Bill in person twice. I have hung out with FossilMedic Mike Ward quite a few more times. It is always my pleasure! These guys are two very interesting and great people. If you ever get the chance to meet them, take the time and sit down to chat.

The FireGeezer Blog is one of the most well rounded and far reaching fire service blogs out there.

Recently, FireGeezer added some new writers to his crew and has really refined the blog. The truth is that you just never know what will be written about day to day in the fire service.

The very unique thing about FireGeezer is Bill’s Morning Lineup…his intro to the day about what he is thinking about much like walking in to his station to relieve the shift before and have a quick discussion before shift change. Bill wrote about his 4 year anniversary in the latest morning lineup here.

Here is an excerpt:

It was very primitive to begin with.  I didn’t have the ability to post images yet, and videos were out of the question at the time.  And while I had a general idea of what I wanted to cover, I needed to get a lot of postings under my belt before I could get a sense of what sort of story would be interesting enough that people would want to check back the next day and see another one.  That is a never-ending chase because universal interests are always changing and I try to stay within that group desire.

Congratulations on the first 4 years Bill…Here’s a toast to the next four!

Voting continues for the Black Diamond Boot Fire & EMS Blog of the Year.

While Iron Firemen has continued leading the Fire blogs with more than a 350 vote lead, the EMS blogs have a little competition going.

I have been watching the votes carefully since the voting began. I do this because I enjoy seeing the competition and to make sure there isn’t anything fishy going on.

I assure you that everything has been fair!

What has been interesting is how on Sunday, Rescuing Providence has narrowed the almost 150 vote lead by A Day in the Life of An Ambulance Driver to less than 90 votes. Last year, we saw the majority of the votes in the last two days. Anything can happen. It all depends on who is pulling for who and how many votes you can get (obviously).

Even the lead that Iron Firemen is enjoying should not be taken for granted. You just never know.

I have enjoyed seeing the various posts by these bloggers and others drumming up support. I would love to share them, but I want to be sure not to show bias. If I showcase 1, I would have to share all of them and more than likely I would accidentally leave a couple out.

Voting continues until Midnight Tuesday February 1, 2010!

Video: Massive Fire in the Netherlands Now Under Control at Chemie-Pack Chemical Storage Facility

Firegeezer has been on top of this story today. Check out the coverage here.

There are still questions on the air quality due to the toxic chemicals that burned in the fire.

Chemie-Pack storage facility in Moerdijk, Netherlands burned today.

Following news source: http://news.xinhuanet.com/english2010/world/2011-01/06/c_13678100.htm

Employees of the company Chemie-Pack reported that 400,000 liters of heavy carcinogenic chemical material was stored in the sheds. The company has been since 1982 situated in the industrial area of Moerdijk and has a staff of around fifty people. It processes and packs chemical products for the chemical industry, the rubber industry and the paint industry throughout the world. No staff was hurt when the fire started inside the factory.

Top Ten Best Christmas Gifts For Firefighters List For 2010

Last year, I offered my top ten Christmas Gifts for Firefighters (last years list is here). The article has remained very popular even this year.

Just in Time for Black Friday!

This year, I am redoing the list for 2010. There are many new gifts out there and I want to make sure that the firefighters are getting what they deserve…The Best Christmas Gifts for Firefighters!

This year Ash and Dreams posted a Top Ten Gifts for Firefighter Wives…Including the firefighter vibrator. Imagine that… The last thing we want is another firefighter at our house while we are working. Even if it is powered by 6 D-cell batteries!

This top ten list could  be easily used year round. Be it birthday, anniversary, Christmas, Hanukkah, or whatever these gifts are bound to make you popular with the firefighter you gift them to.

I challenge you to come up with a better list!

Just in case you are wondering…I have not been paid or solicited by any of the mentioned products or companies I might name or link to below. Note: some of the gifts might have been reviewed by the Fire Critic. However the Fire Critic is UNFORTUNATELY not being paid for this list or to list any of these products.

10. Ledger to keep track of their calls

Ledger to keep track of their calls - Get your firefighter a ledger (or diary) so they can keep track of the calls they run, the things they do on shift, or tidbits of information they might want to keep a note of.

I have a terrible memory. I also do not keep track of much. If I wrote things down, I might be able to pinpoint exactly what the Chief told me in his office on a particular visit!

Or

I might have written down all the fires or major calls I have been on to help me put my experiences into that book I have always wanted to write. You know, the one about the fires (both of them) that I have been on!

9. Leather Fire Helmet

Cairns New Yorker Fire Helmet

Leather Fire Helmet – I love my leather helmet. I hope to get a new one soon. If at the very least, purchase a traditional style composite helmet for your firefighter! The “salad bowl” helmets that most departments issue are a travesty.

Probably the most popular leather fire helmet is the Cairns New Yorker. However, there are many other options out there.

These are not cheap by any means. However, they are well worth the investment.

Visit MSA online to purchase

8. Firemans Chore Denim Jacket

Here is a lovely model wearing a Firemans Chore jacket!

Firemans Chore Denim Jacket – These are very popular jackets among firefighters. They have many options and you can customize them the way you would like. About: Firemans Chore® Inc. is located in Indianapolis, Indiana offering you the “Original” Denim Chore and Diamond Quilted Job Jackets Made in the USA. A Firefighter owned and operated company since 2004, we bring you a line of tradional firefighters jackets that can’t be beat for style and comfort. They offer IAFF firefighter gear, and bagpiper gear as well including buckles, brooch’s, cap badges, and sporrans.

Visit Firemans chore online here

7. Firefighter/EMS/Police Monopoly

Firefighter, Law Enforcement, and EMS Monopoly

Firefighter, Law Enforcement, and EMS Monopoly

Firefighter/EMS/Police Monopoly – Finally there is parity among Fire/Police/EMS. Unfortunately it isn’t in the pay! However, each public service entity now has its own monopoly game geared towards them. For less than $40, you can be playing monopoly with your loved ones. I have them all, shouldn’t you!

Check out Emergency Services Play for more information and ordering info for these games!

Nothing says competition in a firehouse like a good old fashioned game of monopoly!

6. FireGeezer Mug

Firegeezer Travel Mug

FireGeezer Mug - Firegeezer has come out with a new travel mug to go well with his normal coffee mug. Order the travel mug here or the normal mug here.

Per FireGeezer:
This state-of-the-art Travel Mug has all of the features you want:

  • Whopping 16-ounce cup
  • Double-walled insulated construction
  • Reduced diameter base fits in most cup holders
  • Keeps your coffee hot for more than an hour (we tested it!)
  • Metallic Fire Engine Red color …. just like your ride

This is the perfect travel mug to get you to work in the morning and keep you coffee’d up on the drive back home. As you expect with any Firegeezer product, this is top-quality and will give you long and faithful service. The artwork is the same as that on our standard coffee mug, except that all the writing is white lettering over the metallic fire engine red color.

5. Leather Fire Boots

Black Diamonds X2 Boot

Leather Fire Boots – More specifically, the new Black Diamond X2 Boot.

You might remember that I did a product review on this a couple months ago. Since then I have been wearing my boots every day at work. These boots are amazingly comfortable! I cringe when I see a firefighter wearing those rubber boots that are typically issued by the department. Ugh! If they only knew how comfortable that leather boots are.

Help your firefighter out by making them at least look like they know what they are doing while on the job by fitting them into some leather fire boots.

4. Firefighter Calendar

Girls on Fire

Firefighter Calendar – There are so many firefighter calendars out there. Female firefighters will have no problem finding a decent calendar full of hunky male firefighters. What there aren’t many of is female firefighters or female firefighter calendars. Don’t worry though, I have found the best of both…Check out the Top Ten Hot & Sexy Firefighter Calendars for 2011 for my picks. That being said, your firefighter should have a calendar to keep track of your anniversary, birthdays, and other important dates. Why not get him (or her) a firefighter calendar. Just check out the one on the right for a decent idea.

Click on the pic for more examples.

3. Camera

Camera - Yes a camera. No, not a huge, bulky, and expensive camera. Just a small point and shoot digital camera.

No, not so firefighters can stop what they are doing to take pictures of themselves. And no, not so firefighters become photographers on the fireground while they should be working.

Simply because too few people are capturing the good times with photography. Get them a camera to carry with them on the rig so they can take a picture of their crew while they are at fire prevention events, done working after a fire, or pictures around the station for example.

More importantly, get them a camera so they can capture training nuggets and pre fire plan issues. These photographs might be used to spread the word at the station or send in to one of the training sites to teach people about issues, construction, obstruction, or weird occurrences that might effect them if there was a fire.

2. Sav-A-Jake Multi Purpose Rescue Tool

Sav-A-Jake Rescue Tool

Sav-A-Jake Multi Purpose Rescue Tool - Sav A Jake offers many rescue and firefighting tools and straps in kevlar and leather. These firefighter rescue tools are small and can fit inside your firefighters turnout gear. They have a multitude of uses.

Check out the many other things that Sav A Jake offers like radio straps, hose straps, and tool straps to name a few.

Visit their web site here

1. Firefighter Apparel

Unfortunately, the bulging biceps are not built into this shirt.

Firefighter Apparel - Whether you like Black Helmet apparel, Rak Wear (working on a product review now), Ride Backwards, or LEO fire apparel (product review here) they have something for everyone. Each of these companies have come up with designs for firefighters that are not over the top or whacker-ish. The designs are quite well done. These t-shirts are sure to be a hit for any firefighter who doesn’t mind showing off his trade.

Getting your Blog To Work For You, Making the Most of it, Creating a Network, and Gaining Readers

It has been a while since I have posted a “Blog Tip” (previous ones on monetizing your blog) on Fire Critic. After speaking with other bloggers and hearing that some of them are reaching for readers and trying to comprehend the best ways of increasing readership I felt I would offer some tips.

These tips can be useful for any bloggers, although some of the tips might be catered to the crowd on the FireEMSBlogs.com network. I have been blogging in some form or another for the past 6 years. I have not learned it all, and I realize that best practices can be altered, discovered, or modified daily.

I will follow up with many more “blog tips” in the future. This is a beginner “blog tip” to get new bloggers rolling and some extra tips for others who are looking for that extra boost.

This article will focus on spreading the word to a larger audience and when, how, and why to write articles.

Writing articles

Be original!

  • Focus on your audience. Hopefully you have defined your audience. Obviously I have not!
  • Write at the frequency of your choice. Don’t make it a chore. The Happy Medic has said before that if he sits down and has to think real hard about what to write about he gets up and does something else. This is a good practice. Don’t force it.
  • Write about your readers…not yourself. Unless you blog in the format like IronFiremen.com, you should write about your readers. Most of them don’t want to hear about you. You can add your thoughts, but don’t make your blog all about you…nobody cares.
  • Create conversation. You want comments? Ask a question.
  • Write about controversial subjects. Not everyone is a STATter911.com or FireGeezer. However, you can still write about controversial subjects. Be sure to be clear if you are offering your opinion. Even if you merely write about a subject, whatever you write will be read as your opinion. I often write about stuff without offering my opinion until after the comments begin.
  • Follow up with your articles. If the commentary leads to more conversation you can write another post about the new information. Likewise, if you are writing about a news story be sure to follow up on any future news on that story.
  • Pictures and Videos - readers love watching videos and seeing pictures.
  • Limit your words – Many blog gurus have put a limit of words in a single post. I am not quite that strict on this. However, use as few words as you need to get your point across. Most readers scan the content, they go back and read verbatim if they see something that captures their attention.
  • Give Credit - if you use a photo or quote another blog be sure to give them credit and link to their content.
  • Share what you read after you write it….read on!

Sharing, Networking, and Social Media

There are numerous social mediums out there. Facebook and twitter are probably the most worthwhile.

Facebook – Fire Critic Facebook Fan Page

  • Facebook Fan Page - Create a facebook fan page for your blog! Utilize this fan page to connect with your fans. Facebook is the busiest site on the internet. People spend hours on facebook every day.
  • Networked BlogsNetworked blogs is an application on facebook that parses your rss feed from your blog to your facebook fan page. You can also post your articles directly from networked blogs to twitter. I don’t recommend this though, you are better off with twitterfeed…read on.
  • Follow the comments on Facebook. Be sure to follow your blog posts as they appear on facebook. The comments can take off before you know it and they don’t translate to comments on your blog (yet).
  • Make your Fan Page Known. Be sure everyone knows about your facebook fan page! Make the link easy to find and blog about your fan page!
  • Facebook Share and Facebook Like – install these plugins on your blog to make it easy for readers to share/like your articles on facebook.

Twitter - Follow @FireCritic

  • Twitter Username – Make your twitter username easy to remember for others and short! Twitter constrains you to 140 characters. You don’t want half of that to be your blog name if your blog has a long title. Chris Kaiser (Life Under the Lights) uses CKEMTP for everything. The branding of his username makes certain cohesion for people seeing his username on social media sites. He has created a brand others remember.
  • Syndicate on Twitter – Use TwitterFeed.com to syndicate your content from your blog to your twitter account. That way everyone gets your content as soon as you post it. Twitterfeed can also be used to send your content to facebook, but  I recommend using networked blogs for that.
  • Tweetmeme – install the tweetmeme plugin on your blog. This plugin offers your readers the ability to share your article on twitter easily.
  • Start Conversation – use twitter to create conversation about topics. Engage other users.
  • Follow other Twitter users – Follow other twitter users you are interested in. Don’t autofollow. I don’t do it and I think it is cheap. I follow the people I want to follow.
  • Retweet - Retweet others tweets that interest you. If you do it, they might return the favor. It is a cycle that people create by sharing others thoughts, and links.
  • Use hashtags – If you are a Fire Service blogger, use hashtags like #Fire and #Firefighter and #Firefighting. If you are EMS, use #EMS, #EMT, #Medic, and #Paramedic. They help! Some people follow hashtags to see what the latest news is on that topic!

Tricking out your blog

Ah, the age old question of what plugins, widgets, and other stuff you should add to your blog.

  • Social Media links - Be sure to have icons with links to your facebook fan page, twitter account, email, rss feed, and maybe more like firefighter nation account and jems connect account.
  • Tweetmeme, facebook share, and facebook like - make it easy for others to spread the word about your articles.
  • Related posts – using a related posts plugin in the bottom of all of your articles can provide more clicks to stories you have written in the past.
  • Copy other blogs - Don’t copy the content. If you see something you like, ask the blogger what it is and where you can get it!
  • Statistics – I recommend the very easy and free statcounter along with google analytics for following your stats!
  • All in One SEO – Search for this on WordPress Plugins and maximize the Search Engine Optimization of your blog easily.

Increasing Traffic

  • Link to other blogs – If you see an article that someone else wrote link to it. Write a small paragraph about it and offer the link. They will appreciate it and might do the same for you if they see something they like on your blog.
  • Syndication - Syndicate your blog on twitter, rss through feedburner, facebook, Firefighter Nation, Jems Connect, and other sites that will provide trackbacks and clicks to your content.
  • Tags and Categories – Especially on FireEMSBlogs.com, but also very useful elsewhere. Take the extra minute to tag your articles appropriately (look at all the tags on this article). Likewise, utilize categories to properly place your articles in respective groupings. You would be amazed at how much traffic you can get from tags/categories being properly used.

Again, this is a list of things to do for the beginner blogger as well as some extras for those who are looking for an extra boost.

Collapse Danger of Exterior Walls While Operating Exterior…or Interior

Firefighters must realize the collapse danger of walls while operating at fires. No matter the construction, I assure you buildings can and will collapse after being attacked by fire. Hose streams can also assist in weakening walls or finishing them off after the affects of fire.

While operating on the scene, and more importantly when we arrive on scene we must place our apparatus out of the collapse zone and operate at a safe distance if a collapse were to occur. Parapet walls, cantilevered walls, fancy facades, awnings, and signs on the buildings all have a tendency to collapse or fall.

I just got finished reading the chapter on Michael Goff in “Last Alarm” by Jerry Laughlin. The book was published in 1986 and features 5 true stories about firefighters who died in the line of duty. Michael Goff, a Petersburg (VA) Sergeant was killed when a wall collapsed on him following an explosion at an apartment complex. The explosion also injured many firefighters, EMT’s, and civilians (some who had just been rescued).

Even if you are just beginning as a firefighter and have not had time to delve into building construction, you need to know the risks of collapse.

In the videos below, you will see a parapet wall collapse, a building collapse, and firefighters operating inside a 1 story residential after the roof has collapsed.

Parapet Wall Collapse in Brewster, Ohio

Building Collapse Collapse videos from large Pawtucket, Rhode Island mill fire.

Statter911 covered this video yesterday with an additional video and information on taking great video on scene of fires.

2 large fires that evening

More from STATter911 here and FireGeezer here on these two fires

Here is a bonus video of another fire in Brewster Ohio that they fought earlier in the evening

Firefighters inside after roof collapse

I must admit that I love fighting fire. However, it makes no sense at all to be inside this structure from my vantage point. That being said, maybe they saw something I didn’t. One thing is for sure, they don’t really do a lot of good in putting the fire out from the inside. I am not sure where this fire occurred.

The Fire Critic Reinvigorated with great content, videos, and topics for firefighters

Over the past several years, I have created several web sites. The Fire Critic has remained one of my favorites.

The past several weeks has brought clarity to its purpose. In an effort to move the site forward, I have decided to update more often with videos, articles, and whatever else is new or interesting in the fire service.

What this means to you is that you will have to check back more often to see what is new and/or scroll down further to see what you have missed!

I have also been working to maximize the potential of the twitter account (@firecritic) and facebook page of the site. As always, you can friend request me as well here.

FireCritic – Twitter @firecriticFacebook

Interestingly enough, today’s Monday Morning Shoutout here at The Fire Critic goes to ChicagoFD.org. I checked the site out when I found some great videos on youtube from them. The interesting thing about it is that Mike Ward over at Fire Geezer wrote a detailed article on Chicago: Remembering those lost in Chicago: 21 dead at Union Stock Yards in 1910 and 9 dead at Hubbard Street in 1961. Check it out, it is a good read!

This past weekend, I have been stuck at my house trying to pass a kidney stone which my friend Captain Wines so eloquently wrote about here on Ironfiremen.com. Prior to that was the epic anti-climactic “Rhett said” vs. “Dave said” between Dave Statter and I over the events in Obion County Tennessee (Fire Critic links here, here, and here & Statter links here, here, here and here).

Of course, if you weren’t able to catch the live netcast of the discussion on Obion County, be sure to check it out below!

Listen to the netcast right here!

I also posted several decent videos, as did Dave Statter on numerous fires this past weekend. Here is a link to an article with most of them here.

“VACANT” vs. “UNOCCUPIED”

Firefighter Behavior has a decent look at whether or not Vacant Structures are actually Vacant unless we say they are. I have been trying to explain this for a long time. There is a difference between “VACANT” & “UNOCCUPIED”.

In my opinion, vacant simply means no one resides there on a regular basis (i.e. homeowner or renter). Vacant structures can still have people in them. Whether it is squatters or kids playing around, vacant structures can be “OCCUPIED”. The only way to rule out a structure being occupied is by doing a thorough search. Read the story of a child who died in a VACANT, but OCCUPIED structure and why Backstep Firefighter is asking the question When Did It Become Okay To Say ‘No’? They also followed up recently with this post: Why We Search: Baltimore

Have you ever left a coffee mug on the tailboard?

One more thing… FireGeezer has finally come up with a coffee mug that might withstand you leaving it on the tailboard and forgetting about it when you get a call. The new travel mug is available, you can check it out here!
