Video: LAFD Rescues a Seagull from a Tree at Venice Beach

LAFD’s Eric Johnson of Ladder 63 rescued a seagull from a tree on the beach. The bird got caught in some fishing line and ended up suspended from a palm tree. The first video (from tonyvera.com) shows the bird get rescued and towards the end is an impromptu interview of the firefighter who made the rescue. Apparently this is not the first bird rescue for firefighter Johnson.

If you notice at one part in the video, when the firefighter makes it back to the ground, you can see how many people are recording the event by cell phone camera. Also noted in the video at that part is how many people want to offer their opinion of what to do with the bird.

The bird ended up taking flight. While that part wasn’t caught on film, the firefighters stated the bird flew off just fine and they did it incognito because if the bird couldn’t fly it might not have the best being caught on film.

The second video offers a differing view and starts a little bit earlier in the rescue.

There have been 23 Line of Duty Deaths This Year

This year, I made a pact that I would honor ALL of the Line of Duty Deaths. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, but I didn’t know it would be this hard. I fell behind about a week ago and have not been able to catch up. Then today, another LODD in Los Angeles.

Failure is not an option…and I realize that there are plenty of other notifications that assist firefighters in following along with LODD’s. My point was not to compete, but merely to supplement their information with whatever I could find at the time.

I intend to continue on with my goal. To date, there have been 23 LODD’s this year according to my count. The 23rd being Glenn Allen in Los Angeles.

The Fallen Brothers in bold below are the ones I have fallen behind on. The links go directly to their information on the USFA LODD Database.

Rest in Peace Brothers…

From Liveleak:

L.A. River Rescue LOS ANGELES — A man who apparently jumped into the rain-swollen Los Angeles River was pulled to safety by a rescue helicopter Sunday.

The man was seen jumping or walking into the river near a bridge east of downtown just before 8 a.m., according to L.A. Fire Department spokesman Erik Scott.

Police officers tried unsuccessfully to res More..cue him at Sixth Street and Olympic Boulevard.

A police helicopter team was able to pull him from the river near Vernon — about four miles downstream from where he jumped in.

The man was conscious and talking to rescuers, according to Scott. He was transferred to a fire department helicopter and flown to an area hospital in stable condition.

His name has not been released.2:37 p.m. PST, November 21, 2010
