This weeks Monday Morning Shoutout goes to the Hybrid Medic. This is a fairly new site in the EMS blogosphere.
About the Hybrid Medic:
I became a Basic EMT in Oklahoma in 2004. When I couldn’t find any engineering jobs (I wasn’t interested in the oil industry) I started working for Med-Trans, Inc in Springfield, OH. I started paramedic school at Grant Medical Center in 2007 and finished in mid-2007. I was hired by the Memphis Fire Department in 2008.
This weeks Monday Morning Shoutout goes to Dave Statter’s STATter911.com. His site has been up and running for quite a while, and is easily one of the most visited “fire blogs” out there.
Dave recently retired after working as a reporter in the DC Metro area. He now spends his time as a consultant…most notably the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
Even though he has retired, his site hasn’t changed all that much. I can only guess that he doesn’t have all the news stories at his finger tips…but I am sure he is still connected!
This weeks Monday Morning Shoutout goes to Hydrantgirl and her Firefighter (http://hydrantgirl.blogspot.com/). The blog began in February of 2009 when the author (Hydrantgirl) was trying to become a firefighter and was engaged to a firefighter. Since then a lot has changed. She is now a trained firefighter and paramedic who is still looking for the right job, and her firefighting fiance is now her husband.
She falls under the category of firefighter blogger, EMS blogger, and firefighter wife blogger!
She enjoys blogging because it is a great outlet for everything she goes through and she loves hearing stories about how she has motivated people!
What else would you like to share: (in her words) Never would I have imagined that following my husband’s footsteps in becoming a firefighter would change my life as much as it has, and fulfill it at the same time. Excitement, nerves, doubt and determination are all part of a normal day for me.
I have followed her blog for some time now. I enjoy her writing and stories.
She is running a contest (one thing I need to get off my butt and do again soon). The winner gets some art from FireArt.com. The link is here with all the rules. As for the blog, check it out and follow it often!
This weeks Monday Morning Shoutout goes to another brand new blog in the fire service blogosphere…No Ambition But One is a different kind of fire service blog.
The “About” page simply states:
We are a group of proud firefighters who are here to have a conversation about advancing and professionalizing the fire service. There are no sacred cows here.
The three guys (Patrick, Josh, and Doug) who run the site have been in the fire service about as long as I have.
They bring an interesting attitude, reasoning, and discussion to many topics. Stay tuned as they get this thing going!
This week’s Monday Morning Shoutout goes to the PGFD PIO Blog. Mark Brady is the PIO for Prince George’s County Fire Department in Maryland. His job, in my eyes, is one of the most difficult FD PIO jobs in the Nation.
Why the most difficult? In my eyes because of the sheer size of the County, number of departments, it being a combination department, as well as many of the news stories and scandals that have occurred there.
When I told Mark that I thought it was one of the most difficult he said that basically that is why he loved it. It is a challenge and he enjoyed it!
Check out the blog here. It might not be the prettiest, but it gets the job done!
This weeks Monday Morning Shoutout goes to the Tactical Pants Blog. This blog is part of a larger web site for a company which specializes in tactical pants (BDU’s to many). You know, like 5.11 pants. More and more fire departments are going to these tactical pants for every day use. I don’t know if they do it now, but a department I know fairly well used to purchase seconds of some brand of tactical pants. The seconds are very cheap and need replacement frequently. Apparently there is cost savings somewhere in there. I am actually more of a fan of straight legged pants for everyday use (hint, hint…I wear navy blue and do product reviews right here at the Fire Critic)…I digress.
The main reason why I am showcasing the Tactical Pants Blog on the MMSO is because I like the way they have connected with the social media generation! They have gone beyond the blog to include a twitter account and a facebook fan page as well!
I can only imagine that this type of outreach, advertising, and sharing on social mediums has to be beneficial to their sales. That is just a hunch though!
The Tactical Pants Blog is updated regularly with information on their products, their company, and plenty of other stuff from other bloggers! Check them out!
This weeks Monday Morning Shoutout goes to TNFireNews.com.
You might not believe how much work goes into a State Fire News web site. There is a small breed of us who have created web sites for our State’s fire news. We have to rely on submitted content to make it work. Some have made a success of it, others have closed up shop. Still there are a couple who are trying to break through and make it work.
One of those sites is TNFireNews.com, Fire Service News for Tennessee. Another is ILFireNews.com. Both are independently run and join the likes of FireNews.net, SConFire.com, VAFireNews.com, Texas-Fire.com, and others. Several are regional sites instead of State sites and are just as popular like PhillyFireNews.com and HoopieWorld.com. I am sure I am missing a few great ones.
Andrew Catron is refocusing on TNFireNews.com. If you are in Tennessee, help him showcase your fire department by submitting news, events, photos, articles, and whatever else!

This weeks Monday Morning Shoutout goes to a brand new blog. The Average Jake Firefighter Blog is a blog by Robby and Danny Owens. I got to meet them at FDIC this year (although I am the idiot with the camera who forgot to get a pic!). Robby is a guy I have had the opportunity to bump into via email, other blogs, on the air over at Burnin it down, and occasionally on Firefighter Netcast. Danny is usually along for the ride as well. You could easily consider these guys constant students of firefighting. They seem to train hard and fight fire harder!

There is a new blog on the circuit. The Leatherhead Firefighter Blog is this weeks Monday Morning Shoutout. The blog is created by twitter user @leatherheadff and looks very promising. There are several blog posts up so far so you can catch up pretty quick. Take a chance and leave a comment!
This weeks Monday Morning Shoutout goes to Firefighter Wife. Firefighter Wife is a blog by just that…a firefighter’s wife! She talks about the perils of being married to a career firefighter. She also discusses the differences between now and when he was a volunteer.
I picked it partly because of the content…partly because I am a huge fan of what our counterparts think of us on the job…and partly because of the half naked woman in her logo!

This weeks Monday Morning Shoutout goes to Two In Two Out. Two In Two Out is a newer blog on the circuit and is currently undergoing a facelift. The blogger is the wife of a firefighter and offers a decent post about many other firefighter wives blogs (link here).
You may have noticed that I didn’t post a Monday Morning Shoutout last week, so this week is a double take!
On the same subject of Firefighter wives is one of my favorites. The blogger behind Stop, Drop, and Blog (aka @FireMom on twitter) blogs about her family, her firefighting husband, and she take a lot of photos. This is a must read for many.
I love reading these blogs by firefighter wives because it is interesting to see their view of our lives. I have seen many wives who just don’t get our lifestyle, our jobs, our Brotherhood. However, there are plenty who do get it and understand why we do what we do. I am very lucky to have found one who is very understanding!
This weeks Monday Morning Shoutout goes to Everyday EMS Tips. Everyday EMS Tips is a well rounded web site/blog that provides a post a day (or more) for EMS professionals to increase their knowledge base. The site is run by Greg Friese.
The site offers podcasts, ebooks, and links to plenty of continuing education type information.

This weeks Monday Morning Shoutout goes to 1-Union-801. The blog, served up on blogspot, is run by a friend I have met via twitter. His twitter username is @ssgjbroyles. The blog 1-Union-8011-Union-801 tagline reads: Mainly how Military and Civilian EMS differ…although the tasks learned are the same.
The blog is fairly new and you know I love finding out about new fire/EMS related blogs. He doesn’t post everyday, but offers his views when you get a chance. When you get a chance head on over to 1-Union-801 and check it out!
This weeks Monday Morning Shoutout goes to To Old To Work, To Young To Retire (aka TOTWTYTR). The blog is brought to you by an anonymous blogger. I was fortunate enough to meet the blogger this past weekend.
What I found most interesting was how some of the other EMS bloggers were amazed at meeting him. Most of us bloggers have spoke on the phone, seen photos of each other, or at least emailed each other. Over time, this turns into a relationship/friendship of sorts. Prior to this weekend, I do not know that I have ever been in contact with TOTWTYTR. I have read his blog but must admit that I don’t catch it every day.
Apparently he writes some pretty interesting stuff. Interesting and opinionated enough that his identity must remain as anonymous as possible to keep a distance between the online anonymous writer and his real life identity. I understand this and have no issue with it.

This weeks Monday Morning Shoutout goes to Life Under The Lights or (LOTL). LOTL is run by a Chris Kaiser, a Firefighter/Paramedic in Illinois (the S is silent).
His blog focuses on para-medicine, although he runs the occasional fire. His insight on EMS 2.0 is thought provoking and well examined. He has recently been involved with Justin and Mark in their latest videos “A Seat at the Table“…
Chris was also featured on Firefighter Netcast among other things. Life Under The Lights is celebrating a year on the net this month. I look forward to big things from Chris in the future and read his site daily!

This weeks Monday Morning Shoutout goes to FirstDueMedic.com. FirstDueMedic.com is a blog titled “The Gate Keeper” with a site built around it and is a personal journal about a volunteer firefighter and EMT who is currently in schooling to become a Paramedic. Look for him on twitter @FirstDueMedic and on Facebook.
Ronnie Grubb runs FirstDueMedic.com and his bio states:
In 2006, with a resurging interest in public service and the time to devote to his community, Ronnie rejoined the ranks of the volunteers in Henry County and began the arduous task of retraining and recertification. This weeks Monday Morning Shoutout goes to the Firefighter Cancer Support Network. The Firefighter Cancer Support Network has been connecting firefighters with cancer to help them cope, assisting them throughout their battle, and giving them tools so they understand more about the cancer they have.
I remember meeting one of the guys behind the Firefighter Cancer Support Network at the IAFF Convention in Toronto several years ago. I am not sure the name of the guy, but he created it after battling cancer and winning his fight. He created it to help other firefighters.
I dare say that there are not many firefighters in the U.S. or elsewhere who do not know of a firefighter who has been stricken with some form of cancer.

This weeks Monday Morning Shoutout goes to “A Firefighters’ Own Worst Enemy“. The blog is a new one that recently captured my attention. I would categorize it as a hybrid training blog with some real World experience written in by the author.
The “about page” states:
Jason Hoevelmann is a Deputy Chief/Fire Marshal with the Sullivan Fire Protection District, a combination department, and a career firefighter/paramedic with the Florissant Valley Fire Protection District in North St. Louis County.
and also that:
The blog is based on a class developed by Jason that he will present at Missouri Winter Fire School and at FDIC 2010. Here is a brief description about A Firefighter’s Own Worst Enemy:
A comprehensive look at why firefighters make bad decisions on the job and off duty. This weeks Monday Morning Shoutout goes to DCFD.com. The site is all about fires/firefighting in the District of Columbia. It is run by Administrator – John Mullen, Webmaster – Justin Baer, Contributor – Vito Maggiolo, Photographer – Elliot Goodman, and Graphic Design- Kevin Copley.
The site is updated all the time with great photos from Vito, Elliot, and others. If you keep up with STATter911 you will see their work on the site regularly.
It is amazing how much press that a handful of guys can give a department…Keep up the great work!
This weeks Monday Morning Shoutout goes to the Charlotte Fire Blog…and more importantly the work that Mark Basnight and Rob Brisley have done with embracing social media for their fire department. I did a detailed report on CFD and their use of social media here.
But this is more about VOTING FOR THEM, than the actual shoutout. Yes the Monday Morning Shoutout is a very prestigious blog post, but the award they might win is more of an event! Read on…
I have posted about this in the past, and I am hitting on it one more time. Tomorrow the 29th, is the last day to vote for the Charlotte Fire Department on PIOSocialMediaTraining.com.
You might ask why I am stumping so much for Charlotte, the reason is because I nominated them. I nominated them because I felt they were the epitome of embracing social media by a fire department!
Therefore, I feel as though I have a personal stake at hand here. Not that I don’t think the other finalists aren’t great, I just had to chose a side!
Go here and vote. Then email all your friends, retweet, and post on facebook. Do whatever you have to do to get your friends to vote!
This weeks Monday Morning Shoutout goes to IronsandLadders.com. The site has been online for only a couple months but it looks to be promising. The “about us” page states:
This is a place to talk shop, post new ideas/tactics and continue the pursuit of becoming masters of our craft. There are multiple authors writing and providing input for a variety of topics. This could not be done without the help of many contributors and mentors. Thank You.
The site is about truck work, training, and the like. They are off to a great start.
The guys have a decent look and I think that they will have a lot to offer. Don’t worry, I am sure they will be on twitter and facebook before you know it…hint hint!
At least they went with wordpress right off the bat!

This weeks Monday Morning Shoutout goes to BoronExtrication.com. What the hell is boron you might ask? It is a high strength steel. The site is all about boron and other high strength steel and how to deal with it in extrication.
This site should be useful for all you Pin Job fanatics!
BoronExtrication.com was created by Mike Smith. His very imaginative peers have nicknamed him Smitty (I believe there is a Smitty in every department in th U.S.). Mike is a paid on call firefighter/EMT outside of Detroit and he makes a living in the automobile industry. Therefore, Smitty knows something about vehicles and construction of vehicles.
Stop on in and check out his site. Chris also runs HybridExtrication.com and Firefighter900.com.
Smitty has been blogging for about 1 year and uses the blogger format. He started blogging because of a lack of information on UHSS and Boron in vehicles. His daily reading list includes Fire Daily, VentEnterSearch.com, and yours truly. His best experience as a blogger has been having another blogger reference his site; his worst is going several days without updating the site.

I finally did it…I put “MMSO” instead of “Monday Morning Shoutout” in the post title. Consider this a huge step for me. I actually feel as though people read this and know what MMSO stands for. If it doesn’t work I will revert to the old way of spelling it out.
I had no luck getting a site up for MMSO this week. Actually I gave up. I wrote one up, but I am waiting for an answer to a question I have on it so it will wait til next week.
Then I had two or three others that I was working on and they fell through for one reason or another.
There is a chance I will follow up with another MMSO post, but for now I will tell you about a new process.
You can now submit your own site/blog for MMSO. On the navigation bar above you will see “MMSO“. Click on that and you can read about MMSO and what it is. You can also submit your site there. I will be adding a submission form to make it easier, but until then just use email.
Anyone and everyone can submit their site, however there is no guarantee that I will use it.
